Several years ago I had the distinct honor of performing with the Ventures along with Skunk Baxter & Jeff Cook from Alabama filling in on bass. Truly one of the biggest thrills of my life. Every one of them is not only a first-rate musician, but they are all first rate humans. True gentlemen to the core. If any of them are reading this, please accept my heartfelt gratitude and thanks for your kindness, support & for turning my "rock & roll fantasy" into reality.

The Santo and Johnny original version was one of the most important records in Rock and roll History. MANY great guitarists of Rock and Roll were moved by its simple, and yet very emotive adolescent passion ( Yes passion thats what it created) There have been a lot of very good versions, and every one will have their favourites. I myself find this version very emotive .espcially on the key change at 1.37. Takes me back to being 13 or 14 again. Lovely memories.

Skunk is absolutely amazing with the steel guitar and makes it look easy. Classics such as House of The Rising Sun, Sleep Walk, Pipeline, Diamond Head, Wipe Out, Hawaii 5.0 and Apache. The Ventures always did their unique interpretations to these tunes and never copied the artists who composed and recorded them originally. Sleepwalk was composed and recorded originally by siblings, Santo and Johnny Farina Nokie Edwards was a master on the guitar. Made it look so easy. RIP Nokie Edwards.

Its strange but considering he was and has been the lead guitarist of the most succesful and longest lasting instrumental guitar band Noki is a tremendously underrated guitarist amongst the rock generation and younger. When it comes to melodic playing few can match him. He does things so well they look easy a good trick unlike so many rock guitarist who do easy things and pose and make them look hard.

Negative criticism just comes from ignorance of what music is all about. If a 100 artists recorded the same song, they would expect it to be exactly the same as the original. Robotic in nature. Artists always put their own stamp on a song...its called interpretation 'people.' This is a lovely rendition....better?....worse?...neither...just a fantastic version....period! Apparently missed was the great vibe Jeff was having with his heroes. Thank you for posting this.

The great Carlos Santana said this, "Give ten guitarists, the same exact guitar, strings, picks, amplifiers, the same settings...and you will have ten different sounding guitarists." One more...One day at a rehearsal, the Van Halen Band were rehearsing. During a break, Sammy Hagar asked Eddie if he could play his guitar....Eddie said sure......So Sammy picked up his guitar and started playing it. Sammy stopped and told Eddie, "Hey Man..can you put the settings back like you had when you were playing?" Eddie told him, "I haven't touched a thing!"

Skunk's Defense consulting career Baxter fell into his second profession almost by accident. In the mid-1980s, Baxter's interest in music recording technology led him to wonder about hardware and software that was originally developed for military use, i.e. data-compression algorithms and large-capacity storage devices. As it happened, his next-door neighbor was a retired engineer who had worked on the Sidewinder missile program. This neighbor bought Baxter a subscription to Aviation Week magazine, provoking his interest in additional military-oriented publications and missile defense systems in particular. Backed by several influential Capitol Hill lawmakers, Baxter received a series of security clearances so he could work with classified information. In 1995, Pennsylvania Republican congressman Curt Weldon, then the chairman of the House Military Research and Development Subcommittee, nominated Baxter to chair the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense.
