And we also say: -They gave me a raise. Lit: To me they gave a raise.[Dative case-sentence.] Мне повысили зарплату. Mnye pavysili zarplatu. ★ Мне = to me[in dative case]. Мне is the dative case of Я[YA]= I [nominative case-personal pronoun].  indirect object. Зарплату [zarplatu]=raise, in accusative case, since it is the direct object. ☒ ø -He went to the shop to get some milk. Он ушёл в магазин раздобыть молоко. On ushol v magazine razdabyt' malako.  Actually we don’t say: раздобыть молоко. It is better and more natural to say:  -He went to the shop to get some milk. Он пошёл в магазин купить молоко. On pashol v magazine kupit' malako. OR: -He went to the shop to get some milk. Lit: He went to the shop for milk. [instrumental case is used here.] Он пошёл в магазин зa молоком. On pashol v magazine za malakom. ★ Ушёл = пошёл= He went. [Ushol/Ooshol= Pashol] Зa = for[za] { a preposition} Молоко = milk [nominative case] Молоком =(for) mild instrumental case. You add OM to the word’s end. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

But we don’t say it this way in Russian. Instead we say: -He caught a cold last week. Он подхватил простуду на прошлой неделе On padkhvatil prastudu na proshlay nedele. There are two more ways to say this phrase in Russian: -He got sick last week. Он приболел на прошлой неделе On pribalel na proshlay nedele. -He caught a cold last week. Он простудился на прошлой неделе On prostudilsya na proshlay nedele. She got a cold last week. Lit: She caught a cold last week. Она подхватила простуду на прошлой неделе. Ana padkhvatila prastudu na proshlay nedele. Lit: She got sick last week. Она приболела на прошлой неделе. Ana pribalela na proshlay nedele. -She got/caught a cold last week. Она простудилась на прошлой неделе. Ona prostudilas' na proshlay nedele. -I got flu last winter and was in bed for three weeks. Прошлой зимой я заболел гриппом и провёл в кровати три недели. Proshlay zimoy YA zabalel grippom i pravyol v kravati tri nedyeli. YA ne panimayu. -Did you get what the teacher was explaining in class? Lit: Did you understand what the teacher was explaining in class? Ты понял, что учитель объяснял на уроке ? Ty ponyal, shto uchitel' ab"ysnyal na uroke? -Did you get the joke? Lit: Did you understand the joke? Ты понял шутку? Ty ponyal shutku?
