As a black man I really appreciated this eye opening segment and I love your final thought. Song of the South is a messed up movie with beautiful aspects and I feel it should be remade with more accurate depictions and lessons to be learned. Cancel culture doesn’t solve anything and America hides enough of its messed up history as is. Hiding doesn’t fix the problem

1st off, black people weren't the only slaves to the white man. Lots of peoples were. & it's nice they (Disney) decided to have black characters back then (in 1974 when the movie was made). At that time, you didn't see any Disney movies with Asians or Native Americans... This movie is just about a happy man who likes nature, yet people still wanna be upset and say its racist... meanwhile other cultures had absolutely no representation until relatively recently... Pity.

Thank you for your post!! As soon as the news about changing the theme of Splash Mountain was announced I thought it would be nice if Disney had some sort of educational diorama telling the truth about the era, the way we SHOULD feel about it today, and information about the actors giving them the kudos they deserve! He obviously wasn't respectful enough to watch the film. If he watched the film it is clear it takes place right after slavery. The workers have their own homes, they are free to come and go to work as they please, and at one point Uncle Remus gets fired (you don't fire slaves). He was fired for telling a story that inspired the grandson to stand up against a bully and the bully told his parents. This film is about people who have lived their entire lives in shackles (and he thinks its unfair that they don't speak proper English? That wouldn't be realistic) and now they are free. They don't have much but they do have their freedom and they are literally singing with happiness because of that. Should they have been miserable they weren't slaves anymore? What is respectful about this guy?

.... However you may want to get your facts straight before doing a history lesson. Ha They aren't slaves, they are free people being paid to work. The story is set after the civil war. The reason Johnny and his mother are there in the first place is because the father is writing antislavery post in Atlanta. And yes people can be happy regardless of circumstances. Leftist who are miserable constantly really need to stop projecting their misery to others they don't know. SMH

The guy who wrote the lyrics to "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" was Johnny Mercer: the same guy who would write the lyrics to "Moon River" decades later. He was born in Savannah, GA, where I live. "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" used to be everywhere in Disney-related stuff, well into the 1990s: from the sing-along videos, to the theme park advertisements. Now, Disney doesn't want anything to do with Song of the South, because it is a movie that has not aged well today.

You're 100 percent right about adding educational elements into the queue. A pre-show would be even better. The stories themselves are legitimate and worth sharing. The film also could have a documentary attached to the front. Replacing with Princess and the Frog comes across as patronizing and cultural appropriation in its own right.

I used to have a collection of Disney children's books when I was very small, and one of my favorites were the books about Brer Rabbit and his friends. The tar baby in the book was changed into a fake glue rabbit, which now I could see why some changes. Also the song "Zippedy-Do-Dah" was very popular when I was in kindergarten, and the class used to sing that whenever we had a sunny day.

My people being owned as cattle and seen as nothing more than livestock will never be something to understand or ever be okay in those times or not it was still wrong and they knew it which is why they had to say we weren’t human and less than so they didn’t feel bad. History is often skimmed over and VERY watered down so I agree it should be put more on the foreground instead of pushing it to the back and pretending it didn’t happen. That time was even WORSE than we are taught a lot of it is lies to cushion the blow. Like if I would’ve know white people used to eat black people and make furniture out of our skin and bowls out of our skulls I’d be pretty traumatized but nevertheless these are things we need to be told. Gone with the wind wasn’t racist crap. People are just mad that Hattie McDaniel was black and played a maid. She even said that she would rather get paid to play a maid then be one. Also her character was the only one with reason throughout the movie which is hugely because of the screenwriters of the movie who were all white.

@@jacklemm1518 okay well one can argue that it's unfair to call the whole movie racist crap and (as was my point in my comment) Ms. mcDaniel earned that Oscar and paved the way for all to follow. The fact that she could only play a maid, and Gone With The Wind is full of slaves acting like they love being slaves which is a harmful idea to perpetuate. My father told me a version of the brer rabbit, a cautionary tale cause it ends with a roasted bunny. I didn't watch the movie but I did listen to the songs and liked them. I know about some African folklore so all these makes a lot of sense. But I do think as well that instead of shutting everything they should make a documentary about the folklore, about slavery and about equality. They should also edit the movie to show the lovely songs and the paternal character Uncle Remus looked like. The ride even, should be changed to show the folklore more, have some African music, be worked by knowledgeable people on the topic, by African-American people more than anyone. Making things right is not only shutting stuff up, erasing anything racist, etc, its more educating, creating, and showing what should have been done and what must be done. And I have to say, white people can't talk over black people, by they should speak about the story, open up about history, own up their own racism, and give space to other people of colour, so they can speak for themselves. I think you are doing a a great job, not only by explaining things clearly and appropriately, but you're also promoting learning and change, that's really valuable.

I have an idea. What if "Songs of the South" was rewritten, but as a biography film of John Harris, thus making things historically accurate. Some fiction would have to be made in terms of the slaves and how they interacted with each other (but, being accurate. No southern slurs.) Thus, the animated parts can be a few Be'er Rabbit stories to help John Harris out in some way. The film then concludes with John Harris publishing the first Uncle Ramus volume, and gets praise for them. The slaves could then think; "someday, we may all get praise." Boom. Problems solved.

18:43 I think this was a great point. One thing I found odd about Disney is that, instead of acknowledging the culturally outdated themes in their animations, or anything that would be deemed problematic today, they would try to erase, forget and ban those shady parts of their history. It really wouldn't hurt to put a disclaimer or a short history lesson before offensive animations/movies like Song of the South or, those short toons of Mickey putting on blackface. Yeah, Mickey and blackface doesn't sound synonymous. I thought this was bullshit before I seen it. Other companies like WarnerBros put a warning before the old Looney Tunes cartoons that had offensive themes (racism, stereotyping etc..). The disclaimer did a good job with acknowledging the poor treatment and stereotyping of minorities in the US media in that time period. So, whats stopping Disney from doing this to the Song of the South rides or a possible movie re-release. I'm not condoning the negative portrayal of black people in the movie (I'm black, duh.) , but my question is, why try to erase it when you can just acknowledge the obvious f*ck up and possibly teach some lessons along with it? Thankfully, in the end, they're finally giving my girl Tiana some love. It took wayyy too long. Anyways, thats just my 2 cents.🤷🏾‍♀️ Also, Anansi and Brer Rabbit are criminally underrated African folktales. I grew up with those tales and did not realize the amount of people outside and inside my culture that have not heard of those tales. African folk tales really need more recognition.

Song of the South is a simple story about an elderly man who tells African fables, that have morals, to children and to the workers on a plantation. There is no violence, no cursing, no racism. Please look up my father on Google and get in touch with me if you want to see the entire movie and to know the true story of Song of the South, and not this negative fabrication.

The guy's stories, gleaned from his interactions with the oppressed, is a bit problematic through one facet, agreed. However, the fact that he *accurately* wrote "in dialect/accent" is also educational; I would never equate a dialect with being uneducated or stupid, so there is value to the work through that facet. The folklore itself is fascinating and presents lessons as interesting and fine as Aesop's Fables - such cultural history history should not be erased merely because of a time frame. (We should deny Newton and "gravity" because that was centuries ago, man! - No, not exactly, even though I upset that gravity keeps me from levitating.)

I believe you're right. Like HBO showing "Gone With the Wind" with context presented by a historian Splash Mountain and the movie it's based on should be shown with the appropriate context. Its wrong to bury the past, no matter how shameful, otherwise how are future generations supposed to learn from it.

I was very young and only remember bits and pieces of this movie. I remember seeing it in theaters and as a child totally oblivious to the undertones (children can miss such things sometimes). I knew of the story of Ananzi (Thanks to "reading rainbow") but never put the two together ... I've always been of the mind that rather than Sensor movies like these, that we should learn from them.

The original stories actually seem so interesting, I wonder if it would be possible or even acceptable to create a different film based off/sharing the original folktales (NOT Song of the South) but removing the romanticism of slavery and the portrayal of Black people being happy about this state. Like if the human characters were people sharing the stories to each other more realistically to history than to a young white boy on a plantation. I don’t know, i just think it would be awesome to see more stories rooted in the actual history of other cultures that isn’t just the white American story or point of view

An opinion on a smaller detail mentioned in this video: I love how you talked a bit about the planned ski resort that would eventually become Bear Country and how the characters from “America Sings” were combined with it. I don’t know if it’s because I haven’t consumed a lot of content about Disney or it just isn’t written about a lot, but a single book that isn’t even really affiliated with Disney is the only book I’ve read that mentions it (“A Historical Tour of Walt Disney World: Unauthorized and Unofficial” by Andrew Kiste if anyone was wondering; I highly recommend it).

The Princess & the Frog re-theme is perfect for Disneyland since the ride is next to New Orleans Square and they could just include the ride as an expansion of the land. For WDW since it's in Frontierland, it's gonna be interesting seeing what they do. But with Tony Baxter returning and Charita (who worked on Runaway Railway) I have faith in this. I love the Princess and the Frog's soundtrack

This was awesome...keep up the good work. As a historian I appreciate your genuine outlook and thorough interpretation. I'm from The Bahamas and most of us are descended from Loyalists/Tories, Black Loyalists, Runaways and Ensalved people that migrated after the US Revolution. That language is in fact Gullah/Geechee which has been retaiined and uniquely evolved here in The Bahamas. We have African folklore called "B'Booki and B'Rabbi" and also "Aunty Nancy" that are mirrors of the same stories (B'Rabbi being the trickster Rabbit). I had no idea that Uncle Reemus' stories would be so closely linked but given what I learned in the video it all makes sense. I actually road splash mountain as a child. Songs of the South makes me sick but must be properly contextualized...this emotional reaction to everything can be dangerous and most of it is disingenuine. Though I dont fully agree with your take on cultural appropriation (I personally feel you dont understand it...a lot of people do misuse it too), I appreciate the info. Im a staunch Pan Afrikan and we have to reverse this thing where we cherrypick people and judge them by ONE thing that doesnt reflect them as a total person or reject ALL the other relevant information. newly subscribed and loving the videos! Truly Facinating...loved the vid on John Henry too

The one thing I hate about Disney that they want to forget about this film. This film actually has the very first oscar-winning black actor The guy who plays Uncle Remus is an Oscar winner he won an academy award for his performance in song of the South. Also Disney is good friends for that actor. so do you want to censor the film of one of the very first black academy award winning actors just because it sets in the reconstruction period of America.

Please. He received an “honorary” Oscar. And wasn’t allowed to attend the premier. You are doing what Disney did with the movie. Romanticize racism. We know it happened and acknowledge the times but we have evolved and she be realistic about the images and terms depicted.
