Dave Pratt, CEO Emeritus of Ranch Management Consultants, explains how moving a herd from a paddock that’s been severely grazed to one that needs more time to recover is the first step down a slippery slope.

This is the clearest explanation I've seen. Brilliant.

Most excellent analysis sir, thanks very much for diagramming it out. I've played with this puzzle on my own pasture with chicken tractors, but our rest period can be over a year, or a few months depending on where we are in the wet season (mountains of Ca). Also the terrain yields different rates and I'm sure you've covered all this in class. But this video explained in a few minutes with several hours of university professors didn't even touch! Turned on the light bulb for me.

Gives us few more details. What are the issues or problems you are having with your cows and/ or pastures?

Ranching 4 Profit My cows start calving late April and by early August we are done Calving. While April calves are during their first month of life May pasture are capable of providing relevant nutrition both for moms and therefore for cows. In late June grass quality decreases dramatically, but calves nutrition needs are getting higher. So what should be the approach to mitigate this? Also, new born calves are not that fast and smart to follow their moms, and moving from paddock to paddock might lead to the loss of the calf. Hope you got the point what my issues are. And of course the mid June and on born calves are fed with the milk that’s been got from not that lush and green grass.

My initial comment was about putting cattle on diet mentioned on 5:38, so I said that my cows are either on their last months of gestation of lactating

@@ArsenIslamovandhiscattle As you point out you need to match forage supply in both quality and quantity. If there are holes it will likely need to be met with supplementation. Short graze periods where you are only using the top portion of the plant provide higher levels of nutrition. When animal needs are high, keep graze periods short and grazing intensity light or moderate. When calves are young some good stockmanship is important, also allowing animals to return to where they just were to pick up calves can help. (i.e. no back fence for a few days)

The herd size is going to depend on the land's carrying capacity.
