The "John Wayne" one is Silver Tiger Stripe. The Golden Tiger Stripe was worn more by MAC-V-SOG teams. My dad gave me a set of Golden Tiger Stripe when I was in the 5th grade (1978) after moving to Oklahoma (OSU) where he started instructing ROTC. He was a Army Ranger in Vietnam in 1966. I was made fun of when I wore it to school.

I have a few sets of 'Tigers' that were Dads, local made in South Vietnam. He was a green beanie working with the Montagnards. I wore these as a kid 'playing army'. I still have a handfull of berets (5th & 7th Grp Flash & old JFK White flash). Dad use to wear his old 'Jungles' to JFK. Of course this was pre tab days, onlyway to tell a 'Q' course guy was they wore the full flash not a candy stripe on the beret...when they did wear a beret. Sadly, about 20 years ago Mom cleaned out the basement and gave most of his stuff to the Salvation Army &other Charity shops. Yep...even his Kahki's that looked brand new. I was able to save a few things as stated above. Enjoyed your video's on the historical aspects! Yes, you are very right, many many selling fakes out there, I have seen 'Fantasy' uniforms that folks swear was worn by SF'ers.....looks just like a Hollywood fantasy uniform, they got mad when I called them out. Once again, enjoyed the video's, keep up the good work. Thank you!

I have my Father in law"s jungle hat. He was in Vietnam and Cambodia in 1965. He was a Marine. The hat was made in country. Its a 3 green color "leaf" pattern. I have a picture of him from '65- drinking a beer with 2 other Marines- and he is wearing the hat. I first met Jim when i was 17. I was friends with his son. And i ended up marrying his daughter. The hat always hung in his shed. He wrote "Vietnam " on the outside of the brim. I was very interested in the military ( I enlisted in my local National Guard Field Artillery Unit right after my 18th birthday). We became friends very quickly. We would hang out in his shed sometimes. Jim would tell me about his experiences in the war, as we took a hit or 2 from his whiskey bottle. Lol. He was very happy his daughter and i got married. He told me, right before he died, that he didnt trust any man to love and take care of his daughter, except for me. And he ask me to promise him i would always stay with her and protect her. I made that promise - and ive never broken it. And that original jungle hat hangs on our bedroom wall.

I was big into paintball in the 90s. I can tell you for a fact that tigerstripe was far more effective than m81 woodland in spring and summer. M81 stood out because it was too dark. I used to wear yellow lenses in my mask and the m81 would just pop out.

I've wanted Tiger Stripe camo since I was 14, thanks to Vietcong on PC. Years later I finally was able to play the Fist Alpha expansion. Now I finally have the opportunity to get a garment in Tiger Stripe, and it's the M65 field jacket. I just hope it fits when it arrives. This reproduction I've bought before in the same size, WW2/Vietnam olive, so it should fit the same. Made in the same country too. I'm very excited. Amazing, unique pattern. Very stylish for camo. Any other camo is not really wearable in the street. Most people in my area wouldn't recognise it's Vietnam Era aesthetic, which is another plus. As a kid I had arctic camo cargo pants, but that's what the "scene" was wearing at that time. I'd never wear something like that again. If I wanted camo again, it's Tiger Stripe. Otherwise Woodland will do fine on an M65.

Fun photo find regarding Australian SAS patrols wearing tiger stripe in Vietnam; A 1967 photo caption taken from the book SAS A Pictorial History of the Australian Special Air Service 1957-1997 states; "John is wearing a tiger suit camouflage uniform. These cams were bought by the boys in Baria and Vung Tau as they were seen as superior to Aust greens. The issue greens were seen as adequate by the Army as once they became wet and dirty they were ideal camouflage in the bush."

Vietnam collecting is as bad a minefield as the fake WW2 German items especially with patches. Tiger stripe shirts were usually stamped on the inside near the collar area with AS, AM, & AL for Asian sizes. Larger sizes for US troops were stamped US-S,US-M, & US-L.. Most original boonie tiger hats usually had no chinstrap or foliage loops like what you are wearing. The interiors were usually lined with black or gold cloth. Some that I have seen were made with different patterns of stripes on the same hat. The Vietnamese people were very resourceful.

Hey man, been watching you series here and it has been great. It is nice to see a fresh take on the Vietnam War that is not based on movies or other politically motivated stuff. I know this might be a bit different than the usual stuff you have been doing here, but do you plan on covering the ARVN or RVN? That might be pretty neat, and there are large communities of people you could interview for that. I really wish the Republic of Vietnam could get some more light, it is very interesting but you basically need to be literate in Vietnamese to really read into it.

I know this response is late but technically America did issue tiger stripe the CISO or Counter Insurgency Supply Office headed by Conrad Ben Baker made sets for SF. Mostly they are known for making the sterilized gear for SOG and Mike Force but Tiger Stripe Uniforms was something which they made. Usually these are marked US with before the size and A before the size denoting the cut. Like I said these pieces were only issued to SF. One of biggest things I hate is when people associate Tiger Stripe with MacV Sog as Sog never used Tiger Stripe on cross border operations though pictures do come up with them wearing it during training. The rationale for this is due to Tiger stripe being associated with the US enough for it to be compromising if one of the wearers is captured with it on. Everything Sog did had to have “plausible deniability.” Also I wouldn’t mind a video on some of the CISO uniform pieces made for Sog as they are not known about by a lot of Vietnam collectors. They made Fake NVA and VC uniforms as well as hats, ruck sacks, and rations among other things. These got used on Cross border operations quite a bit

And im wondering why I can only find the blouse and booney, and why I couldnt find the fatigues. Well, I realized that newer generations like to steal collecting pieces and use them for regular wear! Ha! I couldnt hold myself together.... Im trying to complete my reenacting Tiger Stripe uniform, and here people are just wearing those things to "Look Cool". I guess they dont realize that most clothing brands actually make camo schemed pants, shirts, etc...

@@MikeB128 - the ones you're wearing (exposed buttons, horizontal square pockets, "cigarette pocket" on the upper sleeve, etc.) are close copies of the ones that were issued to the ARVN Rangers, etc, so that would be the only "standard" pattern. Tiger Stripe Products has been making this uniform since the 90s (in fact thats the very design they make that you are wearing) it was based off an actual set of ARVN fatigues made in vietnam itself during the war, so that one is about as authentic a set as you can buy. Most others are trash "get rich quick copies of what people think Tiger Stripe should be, but that one? thats the real deal.

Yeah? What's the URL? Spoiler alert, I know that Tru-Spec bought up that pattern. It's CLOSE to the original, but not as accurate as the shirt I'm wearing in this.
