"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Well, it's also a typical of how out of touch rich people are and generally speaking people who are on TV every day or every week are rich, So I don't think it's necessarily this show in particular that is out of touch, but perhaps people in general who live their lives in a gilded cage because of the money they get for being on the idiot box.

In some areas of this country a 15 year old could get an apartment working 2 jobs. Not 10 years ago I was able to live in a garage (and I made it nice). I then got an apartment with a roommate after a year. So it is possible. I was barely 18 and it was San Diego, one of the most expensive cities in the country.

They get monthly subscription for everything from make-up, Candy, etc . They buy fast fashion that is crap. In order to get a house I worked hard and saved. I sacrificed some things in order to save to get what I want I tell them, they might have to do the same. It may take a little longer but it is not out of reach. @@melshome6745 What's funny here is that they're your kids, so the one responsible for their poor money choices in terms of subscriptions is you. Candy? Really? How old are these people. Regardless, I'm pretty certain they probably aren't complaining about life, since they've got the bank accounts of mum and dad to fall back on. For many, the contracts they pay for their phone are a necessity just to be a part of the working force (Yes, even supermarket work wants its employees logged in to company Yammer sites and online timing services in order to do the job these days. If you're a uber driver or delivery person, you need active online access to receive orders, etc, etc. None of things I imagine YOU or your spouse needed back in your days of "hard work".) And the coffee one makes me laugh. I'm pretty certain people drank retail coffee back in your era. This isn't some new-fangled 21st century invention. The fact that those coffees cost $6 today when they were likely 30c back in your time is and of itself an example of what the problem is. But then many don't drink $6 coffee now, do they? You're just looking at the prices of high end coffee shops and acting like that's where we all go, when in reality their clientele tend to be people in the upper management echelons on 100k a year plus who get the luxury of sitting there doing their work on their laptop while the grunts are shackled in the office. But hey, if you know of coffee's that only cost a $1, let us all in on the secret. Personally, I always try and get mine from McDonalds, even though it's nasty as hell, but it's at least under $2 a cup.

By the time I started college, the sticker price at my private liberal arts school in the top tier was around 24,000 a year all in. Now it's realistically around 80,000. And the "nice house" I would have like to buy but couldn't afford 20 years ago was 240,000 but now is 700,000. I would struggle to agree to pay the mortgage payment now even after 20 percent down. And I make more than 3 times now than I did then. Clearly this is not sustainable. I am lucky to have what I have. I cannot begin to imagine what it is like for a new grad. And people in DC wonder why people out here are angry. Astonishing. I honestly think both parties are dead men walking.

I do think Trump will win. I hope I'm wrong. But I cannot cast my vote for Biden again this time. I'm not going to vote for Trump of course but possibly Dr. Cornell West or even Williamson (I liked her ideas during the debate amongst some of the Dem candidates that Biden declined to participate in). The thing that really gets me though is that sure now we are looking at a very stark and alarming contrast between the two main presidential candidates. And the criticism out there that if you don't vote for Biden then its just handing the country over to Trump/the end of democracy ie wasting your vote. But its NO DIFFERENT to any other year previously! It always feels like chosing the lesser of two bad choices. And that is how we allow this two party system to continue to propagate and fail to serve the American people. Maybe if this version of democracy ends after the upcoming election we will finally wake up and demand the changes we need from our "representative" government.

Also, there's the fact that people who push that argument seem to consistently forget how easily it applies in the reverse: Just as one can claim that a refusal to vote for Biden is as good as voting for Trump, one can just as easily make the argument that a refusal to vote for Trump is a vote for Biden. It's not a strategy that is somehow unique to the specific party they happen to support. It's just a lazy, played-out tactic that relies entirely on emotional appeals in an effort to shame someone, and one that immediately falls apart under the slightest rational scrutiny. Nothing more than a tired argument to convince people to fall in line and keep voting within the boundaries of the same two-party system that's been screwing the U.S. citizen over for decades, because it's easier to try to scare people into focusing more on the immediate results of the current election than to provide an actual justifiable reason for why they should support candidates that they don't believe are good at the job instead of risking it on someone unaffiliated with those parties. If everyone who claimed that they'd vote third party if only they weren't worried that it would help the other team win would actually vote third party, then some of the third party candidates might actually stand a chance. At the very least, it could serve to legitimize the rest of the competition enough to scare the shit out of the Red Republicans and Blue Republicans-That-We-Desperately-Pretend-Aren't-Really-Republicans with the realization that their monopoly on the election cycles isn't as airtight as it seems. But no, for all that people who defend Blue No Matter Who want to pretend that they care about the "long term strategy" as if the system that thrives on that mindset will suddenly produce an amazing candidate out of nowhere if they just wait long enough, at the end of the day they're too terrified of the short-term problems that are an inevitable risk necessary to send a message to the Democrats that might actually lead to substantial change in the long-term by forcing them to actually change their stance or continue losing elections. TL;DR Version: Good on you. The only way to change the two-party system that has failed time and time again is to potentially risk a more negative immediate outcome in order to push towards a solution in the long term.

Is typical of the biggest problem for both parties which is hubris. People always want to feel better and more optimistic and are therefore willing to sit around with like-minded people listing off reasons why they think Joe Biden is just the best thing ever, and why Trump is unelectable, and They go away very pleased and happy with themselves only to be kicked in the ass later by reality because things you tell yourself are going to happen to make yourself feel better are reflections of your mood, not of reality. The smartest person in America on politics, Noam Chomsky was asked after a speech by an audience member to predict something in the near future and he declined, saying that if he did give a prediction, It would merely be a statement about what kind of mood he was in rather than a legitimate piece of information. If only everybody was that honest and that smart. Most people who have a tiny fraction of Noam Chomsky's intelligence lack his prudent approach to political analysis and instead offer up whatever they can pull out of their asses to make themselves feel better.

@kain9407 isn't that worse for Biden then? It would be expected of Trump(and it is) but if Biden is eating healthier and is still a incoherent as Trump, then it looks like Biden is in worse shape

Whoopy's boomer talk at the end was so out of touch and condescending. "Just work and you can buy a house" says the rich TV host. 50-60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck! Productivity and coprorate profits are through the roof while wages stagnate. Working harder only makes your boss richer, not you.
