Interesting lecture. Glad you took a moment to admit much of what is written is biased against the Vikings. It is a pity that there are no writings regarding the Viking point of view. A failed crop may have resulted in a Norse village going a-viking to gain supplies, or things that could be exchanged for seed. Women were taken as slaves, which, in turn, provided a more diverse gene pool, as well as cheap labor. Since they didn't write any histories, we'll never know if a crop got wiped out, or a disease killed a large percentage of women which resulted in a raid. I really don't think there were many Norse who turned to raiding as a lifestyle, though many were mercenaries...but that would be another lecture.✌😸

BOB BARKER I unfortunately have not heard back from him as of yet. I know I sent it to his university email and so if he has retired for example it may even be an inactive address. I may need to do some research!

One theory for the Viking raiding age is the Saxon kingdoms started restricting trade with the Scandinavians and so those people turned to plunder.

The Irish monks writing in Latin describe the Norse as dark foreigner and the Danes as light foreigners. The foreigners founded the cities trading centers of Dublin Wexford/ Westford. Waterford, Cork, limerick.

It's my understand that the Vik is the channel betwen Denmark and southern Sweden and Norway, that angled waterway. So maybe the name originated from people living by, or sailing upon that disputed strait.

Denis Kavanagh Norse can also be used to refer to all the Scandinavian peoples of the age. Also, the Norwegians were called “light foreigner”(finn gaill) and the Danes were “dark foreigner”(dub gaill)

Patrick Holt A vik, vig, or vík is the term for a bay in Scandinavian languages. There are many of these bays throughout Scandinavia and the places which were settled during the viking age, i.e. York comes from the Norse name Jórvík.

@@andwhat Always thought those were called fjords? ✌😸
@patrickholt2270

When someone appears who has a substantial military technological advantage, it may be the result of a military revolution within their home region arising from a long period of internecine warfare. So it may be that the Norse Longships were the result of a long period of coastal raiding warfare among the fjords, as the rival kingdoms of Norway, Denmark and Sweden began to emerge (not originally recognising each other's existence or sovereignty). That would explain the opportunistic extension into raiding across the seas, rather than into each other's fjords. Just because the peoples to the south and west were becoming Catholics wouldn't in itself create a casus bellum, but it may have made such raiding and slave-capturing easier to rationalise, as a way of seeing the foreigners as of alien culture, whose sacred places could be despoiled without fear of retribution from recognised gods.

There very little that the Middle Ages ever happened. If it did why aren’t there more records? Why aren’t there more places outside of Europe concerning this time? Why did they use a different calandra than everybody else?

good stuff. About that horns and helmet thing. I think that's over sold. it's actually more unrealistic to show all Vikings wearing a helmet at all than say that they had horns. I mean I'm sure at least one Scandinavian wore horns... But hardly any of them actually wore a helmet. The sword also.. you usually see them wearing swords. Only wealthy people would have had them. most would be carrying spears, knives and axes.
