The ancient navigators known as the Vikings...who where they? Where did they come from? What where they looking for? This video is a historical description of the life and culture of the Vikings, and also of their battle tactics and weapons and armours. I also discuss their cerimonial burial and I give a little introduction about the runes and rune stones they used to write.
Vikings were Norse seafarers, mainly speaking the Old Norse language, who raided and traded from their Northern European homelands across wide areas of northern, central, eastern and western Europe, during the late 8th to late 11th centuries.
Facilitated by advanced sailing and navigational skills, and characterised by the longship, Viking activities at times also extended into the Mediterranean littoral, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Following extended phases of exploration, expansion and settlement, Viking (Norse) communities were established in diverse areas of north-western Europe, European Russia, the North Atlantic islands and as far as the north-eastern coast of North America.
Popular, modern conceptions of the Vikings often strongly differ from the complex picture that emerges from archaeology and historical sources.

It's a lot easier to carve runes into wood than it is to hack them into stones. Indeed, it's believed the reason runes are made up of only straight lines and no curves is to make wood-carving easier. Since wood degrades much easier, the rune stones are the primary source of viking-age writing left to us, which can give us the impression that it was the primary material for writing, but it was probably very much the exeption.

“The Viking Age was relatively short, but it left a distinct mark on history. The Warriors, Pirates, Seafarers, and Traders from Scandinavia influenced the fate of more regions than any other culture before the Age of Discovery and no other land more so than the British Isles.” - Kings and Generals, Battle of Ashdown

Another meaning of the word viking comes from the old norse word "vik", which describes a small/narrow inlet by a coast (or a lake). This word is still used today in Scandinavia. A vik is usually large enough to hold a number of larger boats inside, thus making it important for docking and transporting goods, wares and food, even to this day. And since the inland of Norway was difficult to transport heavy goods at that time, traders would use the coastline and sail in the fjords which dominates the coastline of Norway, and would sail to the vik's in order to trade or deliver, thus henceforth one other meaning of the word viking.

There is also another, newer theory why Nordic peoples started their conquest. It is suspected that they have experienced a population boom during pre-Charlamagne Europe because of the trading relations with many european nations(iron, tools, weapons and art objects for food and other commodities scarce on Scandinavian peninsula), but when Charlamagne proclaimed himself a Holy Roman Emperor and adopted Christianity he forbade trading with pagans and sent Scandinavia into starvation, so that Scandinavians haven't had other choice but to loot (it is also suspected that this galvanised their uniquely violent religion and mentality and disregard for human life, since they had to lower their population). I'm not stating that this is a fact, I'm only presenting it as an alternative theory.

JoeRingo118 Yes, exactly what I was talking about. It's a theory, at least, but it explains a lot. And, Merry Christmas from Serbia, It's today for us, we use Julian calendar for church festivities, or, traditional serbian greeting:"Hristos se rodi!"(Eng: Christ have been born!).

***** It was a years ago, there was a book written by an archeology profesor after he dug up some longships in Denmark, I believe it was called "Christianization of Scandinavia" or something like that. He commented on various digs and grave stones found in Scandinavia, England, Ireland and France, dating from 7th to 13th century. Also, I read several articles and watched several videos commenting on that theory afterwards.

starvation is a very likely cause of the raids. Here in Norway only 3% of the country is "farmable". the rest is marshes and rock or just to freaking cold for anything to grow
@VelikiHejter
@VelikiHejter 7 жыл бұрын
And it could sustain population to a point, problem was that they grew past that point previously.
@VelikiHejter

First, let me be clear, I am not stating that this theory is absolutely and undeniably true, I just red about it and it seemed somewhat convincing. It was Gallic tribes that ransacked Rome in 390 BC, that was one of the reasons Roman army became what it was, Visigoths, Vandals and Ostrogoths ransacked Rome in the twilight years of the empire in 5th, 6th century and at time Rome was not the power it once was. That was during the migration era and all those tribes were also desperate, hungry and in search of land to settle, at that time.

Good stuff! I'm happy that you mentioned that they were literate, even though it was in the form of runes. One curiosity is that runes were in use some time after Scandinavia was christianised, and there have been findings of for instance pieces of animal bones, wood and so on found in medieval remnants in Stockholm with everything from laconic statements to gossip to lewd suggestions written with runes. Another thing worth mentioning is that the reason why 1066 is considered to be the end of the viking era isn't the battle of Hastings but the battle at Stamford Bridge and as a consequence the death of Harald Hårdråde.

As a scandinavian, i'm pleased with the accurate details mentioned about my ancestors. However, i'm a little curious about the part where you said that some historians claim that vikings attacked christian monasteries out of "revenge". As far as my knowledge of Swedish history, Christians never made any full scale invasions or conversion conquests of many Scandinavian villages at the time. The conversion mostly happened internally through the influence of scandinavian chieftains, by increased exposure to christian institutions. Like you said, the culture of ancient scandinavians valued two things above most others: force of arms, but also slyness. You'd earn respect by being a capable fighter but also a SMART person. This especially made manifest in the myth of Odin, seen as a chief of the Norse gods, and also the god to embody wisdom and slyness. And what I think ultimately consumed the pagan culture (or at least removed it from being the official religion in scandinavia) was it's own values of strength and slyness. Viking chieftans stood a lot more to gain and secure their own power and influence by converting to christianity than to oppose it at the time. Christianity wasn't just a religion at the time, but also an extensive trade cartel. Christians often avoided trade with non-christian pagans, so even if you stole silver and valuable commodities you'd find yourself cut out from most European markets regardless or how many riches you tried to sell if you couldn't present yourself as a good christian. Ancient scandinavians were a very practical people. Not very prone to sentimental preservation of things that didn't have much use for them. So these combined factors seems to have facilitated the transitioning to christianity, rather than actual conquest and violent conversions. They simply had too much to gain economically speaking to convert, than they stood to gain by sticking to their pagan ways. Although the sincerity of the vikings that did convert could most certainly be questioned (the truly pious scandinavian rulers didn't emerge until much later in history)

Charlemagne/Charles the saxon slaugtherer could be a reason for revenge on christianity, as he targeted pagans of Europe. Best motive of revenge would be the massacre of Verden killing thousands of pagan kinsmen.

I'm sorry for my unbiased statement on the matter. Karl was a hero of christianity and not of the europeans. Christianity is a religion from the middle east that should've not been spread through force. I suppose once islam becomes a primary religion in europe future generations will belive that to be truly a european religion.
@Nazdreg1
@Nazdreg1 7 жыл бұрын
No, Christianity wasn't distinctively middle eastern. Romans and Germanics were mainly responsible for the large influence of Christianity. Of course the origins (being a variation of messianic judaism) were middle eastern, but the widespread Christianity wasn't in any way similar to the original concept, but a very romanized religion. The only middle eastern part is the relationship to judaism. The same will happen with Islam. If Islam becomes a major player in Europe (I highly doubt that the deeply ingrained Christianity will be replaced, but for the sake of argument let's assume), it will be a European Islam, not a middle eastern Islam.

I've always been fascinated by Vikings because of their almost underrated effect on world history. Just for example the Norman conquest of England. Harald Hardrade pretty much guaranteed Norman victory by extremely weakening the Saxon army during his invasion just before. I'm not saying that the Normans still wouldn't have won but I don't think it would have been nearly as easy if not for the Vikings.

A comment on runes: A lot of runes are actually found on personal belongings. Not just a few, mind you, these are quite common. They typically spell out things like "I belong to [insert name]". These runes are found on tools as well as combs. This gives me at least the impression that ordinary people were able to write and read runes. At least more ordinary than only the most "noble" class.

+Metatron Scandinavians also had a size advantage--one grandfather was Swedish and the other Prussian at 5'7" I am one of the shortest men in my family with my uncles being 6 feet tall and most of them would be about 90 years old. As an idea of size-in good shape I weighed 200 pounds and was benching 350+ pound for a set of 5 and one armed low row 180 pound X10--which probably is a factor in the Norse choice of battle axes as weapons

The average height of a Viking was 5'7". Granted, everybody at the time was shorter than the average man today, but this size advantage was not as substantial as you think. Nor did Norse warriors have substantially better nutrition to supplement growth into super-brutes as portrayed in popular culture. Lesson being, don't feed into mainstream images, learn history. Vikings built their reputation through their ferocity in battle, pagan religion, and (general) success in many raids, at least early on. Not by being 6-foot something, muscled supermen.

Regarding helmets. We know for a fact that the helmet found was used in battle, mainly because it shows a spear thrust in the helmet. AND the horn helmets (basicly a victorian/wagner romanticism myth - regarding viking battle helmets) are in fact ceremonial helmets, atleast they were prior to the viking age - or the time leading up to the viking age (vendel erea). Gjermundbu helmet (shown in the video) is NOT ceremonial. Simular helmets have been found, but only bits of them. gjermundbu helmet is the only "complete" helmet to be found in Scandinavia. We know from the Sagas and runestones, that the vikings (wealthier ones) used helmets, often of welsh type. Regarding vikings, the leaders would been nobility in Scandinavia - often sons of Jarls (earls) or petty kings. His personal army would be Houscarls or Hirdemenn - well armoured and professional warriors. But the bulk of the army would be free farmers. All free men (atleast in Norway - acording to Gaulatings law, Frostatings law and so on) had to own a shield, an battle axe and spear by law. The training would start at the age of 5. (Vikings at war, by Vegard Vike and Kim Hjardar). Various viking bands would be known as Liðs, operating on their own - or commin together under joint rule (such as the Great heathen army). The main reason for the viking attacks are several - wealth would mean more men - more political status in Scandinavia (witch basicly was a messy battleground of petty kingdoms). Overpopulation - needing more land. And Frankish pressure to the south, ans the Francs killed saxons by the thousands in the name of Christianity. By attacking chruches and monastaries they would kill two flies in one hit. And you cant really say the exploited the weak, because the "vikings" - norsmen where no unity - they made war uppn echother more often than with others. So as the divided anglo saxons (divided into 4? kindoms) the vikings would be even more divided (Norway alone had about 30 petty kingdoms and earldoms - in the beginning of the viking age). Sorry for my english by the way :P

There are som great examples of helmets that were used by the vikings found in Visby in Sweden though, and they were actually in pretty good shape. Many of them were actually like the ones you showed, and even more elaborate, having almost a saxon look. So what is it exactly that makes you doubt that they used those types of helmets? Also, a lot of them probably wore gambesons as armour, or as the swedish vikings would call it "pansarskjorta".

Love your content Metatron. This is the first time I hear somebody mention one thing in a video I have thought about since a very long time: The north-germanic tribes were under extreme pressure. The Franks were a fearsome war machine and Charlemaigne/Karl the Great, was spreading christianity with the sword like maybe noone before him. Although it is hard to believe, that there has been a overpopulation in Scandinavia considering it's size, I have reason to believe that the climate isn't really well suited to feed a big population via agriculture. Especially when the the tribes in Scandinavia, mainly Danes, Jutes, Goths and Svear are under pressure by immigrating Saxons fleeing from the Franks! Another point I want to add: Among SCANDINAVIAN historians, it is not completely of the book to believe that the term "Viking" translates in to "People from the bay/harbour/fjord". As the common term used for bay in scandinavia is (hold your breath!): -vik! as in for example: Narvik, Bjerkvik, Rejkjavik, Vikersund, Foldvik, Jektvik, Frovik, Gutvik, Rotvik, Leksvik, Stavik, Ulsteinvik, Hällevik, Hörvik, Pukavik, Djursvik, Saltvik, Flivik, Västervik ...and many more. Even the argument that viking originally means "pirate" is not a contradiction. Because were do pirates normally attack? They hide in bays and fjords untill a foreign ship is cruising along the shores.

So probably carving into wood were quite common, but most of these carving of course have not had such a good chance of surviving. Thanks for the video!

good vid. I think it could have been simple economic advancement. Though saw the Celts/Scots, Anglo-Saxons, Slavs and others with more advanced cultures and wanted their piece. And judging on the Danelaw and Normandy, they did seem reasonably able administrators.

When you talked about unified equipment for soldiers and organised Military in the Classical Era you said that only the Romans and the Greeks had a that, and that got me wondering ... what about the Egyptiens ? didn't they have such a thing ?? PS: i discoverd your chanel few days ago and i'm really into the subjects you talk about, i'm a big fan of history and more of a fan when it comes to the Classical era and more specifically Ancient Rome, Salutations from across the mediterranean from Algeria ;)

Hi Metatron. 2 questions. 1. Anglo Saxons dress and armour seem very similar to the Vikings is there a connection? 2. Watched a few of your vids and you do a lot of talks with armoury and weaponary shown in your vids, do you own all the ones shown in your vids? Are you a collector?

As I understand it currently, the angles and Saxons were a bridge between Vikings and Normans. ... I'd still consider them Vikings proper, (though they're known for being English and German, the two tribes go back historically to Denmark) In the battle of Hastings, the Saxon side carried shields similar to the one in the background of this video, as the Normans had the kite shields. The Normans had the earliest consents of "Knights" and used horsemen in combat. .... .... So, short answer... Is yes most "Viking" and "Saxon" equipment is interchangeable.

the things i know of that is wrong is rollo who wasn't brother with ragnar or even related in real life and he appears many years earlier, the real rollo wasn't born at the time of season1. And the siege of paris happens before the great heathen army in the show, in real life it was the other way around, and king ecbert get too live much longer in the show, not much about the vikings religious practises is known so they took some freedom there as well and the life of the real ragnar lodbrok is pretty much a mystery except of what is written about him in the sagas, if i remember corectly they call their viking leaders Earl which is a saxon thing in England the correct title should be Jarl it's pretty much the same small thing maybe That's the stuff i remember it is more smaller things im sure. But i think it is a great show anyway and understand they had too change and add things don't think it had been as entertaining if the had followed history too the letter because many events and such is not well known or really set in stone well except the rune stones ;)

funny you would forget about the spears since the vikings had so many diffirent types of spears Kesja, höggspjót, kastspjót etc it played a huge part in their over all fighting. and i alway's hat the way people say that they wherent soldiers since after Norway was unified in 874 by haraldur hárfagri and denmark in 930 by Gormur gamli they where pretty much just soldiers following their kings.

I want to ask something, I read Esle Roesdahl "the vikings" and Richard Hall, but they dont say much about the armour that was used under the chain mail. they only mention a leather jacket, that maybe was also used whitout the chainmail by non-rich vikings, but they dont describe it. In videos people said that they used Gambeson, but I really dont found anything about... in viking age, there were gambesons? the vikings used it? sorry for my inglish, it is not my mother tongue, From already thank you very much

Great channel! I must confess I am quickly becoming a fan because your videos are both informative and open minded in a way many others on youtube are not. There is a point however i wish to write upon. Being a swede and however proud of my heritage I may be, I do think that the idea of quality swords being made in Sweden or other parts of Scandinavia during the viking era is wrong. Iron was mined (or collected) and used in small scale smithing making things like tools, speartips, nails, axes and the likes of that; in other words where material properties were not as important as in swords. Swords were in most cases bought from frankish lands and were made in the great workshops in Lothringen. Quality steel was not made in Sweden until the 17:th century and the development of the Bergslagen steel industry. Even the mighty Ulfberht swords were propably made in Frankia, because of the latin writing and crosses used. The raw material for them however were likely bought in central Asia and i think it is here we find the real awe in what the vikings did and achieved. It is not a minor thing to establish a functioning trade rout to central Asia through russian rivers and inland seas. Maybe you know more about this than I because weapons in general is not my area of expertise and if so I would be glad to know more about it. Personally I do think that swords are often overglorified, or overemphasized as a symbol atleast. It highlights that the vikings when fighting were indeed more warrior than soldier and his weapon was what he could afford or get his hands on, not something intended to be uniformly used in a strategic sense. Thanks again for a great channel. =)

Have you seen the history channel's series Vikings? In the special features of season 1, they said that women went into battle as shield maidens. Do you know if this was common or even practiced? Hey! Big creds, love your content, but it would probably be appropriate to emphasize the importance of the spear and the very few swords that were actually owned by commoners. While noblemen and richer people (as with any other society i guess) The rich had nicely ornate, quality sword, this is true, but commoners usually only had a spear and knife as far as i know, and noble/richer norsemen could buy high quality chain and helmets with swords, shields and the entire warderobe. Other than that, nicely done. I would say. Oh and also, the bows as hunting would be a side income/living aide of fishing, so carrying a bow into battle or raids would probably be likely. No, the norse would quite likely go into battle rage and die as they go berserk all the time, skirmishing and bows during combat were well documented.

Dear Metatron. A good presentation after the common beliefs and assumptions. The word vikingr refer to the deed of military, but are signifying now the people almost etnic. I also disagree that english is a mix of french and saxon. In fact it is more algamated of scandinavian (most england was at the time danelagen) and italian (all the scolars was there) with some saxian (not so different) and celtic words dough. I come over a quite interesting text about the roman provinces in Norway!!! The autor Sveinung Ghile Raddum is a metallurgist himself and have studied history and languages a lifetime. His teories is ytterly controversal to the historians and the beliefs of nowegian autonomy. Every time they come across a standard legionary burial here (and the are a lot, most auxilliary not standard ethnic roman miles) is a big wondering where the brass pail is coming from. If he got it in duty elsewhere or what. Pathetic if I dare to say. It is quite short way to England anyway, and the idea of not presence of romans here is rather absurd. I read the book since I got it this springtime with exitement. Some of it I am familiar with and some is new and enlightning. I hope you will read it. It is in norwegian but with your language skills, it should be a walk in the park. Or you can thanslate it and get a somehov understandabel language. There is also an english summary. And by unclearity or any obstacle do not hesitate to contact me (I did apply for FB Metatron Metatron) I would if you are interested, like to hear your opinion about the topic. Critic is gold. Yours cincerely Reidar Kaas (half Italian (father of an italian) I live in Åmot Modum kommune Norway. Very near of one of the routes the romans and other miners used. In old time it was navigable here. Navi was name of ship in old time. file:Historie/De%20romerske%20provinser%20i%20Norge/De%20romerske%20provinser%20i%20Norge.pdf

Recently i was reading about Sweden and came across with somwhat interesting piece of information of Sweden's capital, Sigtuna, raided by vikings(?) fom nations i never heard of, these being Oeselians, Karelians and Curonians. I can't find any reasonable info about them from the internet, so i wonder, perhaps you would be interested in taking a look into this? It seems that, at least these Oeselians, were some formidable fighters and are also called vikings in sagas.

Can there be a connection between the historic accounts calling them demons and the fictional portrayal with horned helmets? I mean demons are portrayed often as horned beasts so there would be some logical connection making it seem likely that those accounts influenced the mythical/fictional picture later on. Disclaimer: Just as a hypothetical possibility since I have no clue about how the horned helmets came to be. :P
