Philippe is interested in how architecture can provide a glimpse into how people live all around the world. He travels to some of the most unique spots and culture on the planet to see what they have to offer. Today he is in Northern Iran in Masuleh, an area of lush landscape, unlike the desert climate most of the country offers. In this small village, the roofs are all interconnected to form pedestrian areas. Nest, Philippe heads to southern Louisiana to see the Bayou Country and how homeowners there have adapted to hurricane season.

I've been to Masuleh in 2018. It's beautiful and although is considered a very touristy place nowadays, and is flooded with internal tourists every weekend, during the week life is slow and sweet. People is very welcoming, and kind, and nice. We arrived and didn't have a place to sleep but through a fortunate coincidence we got in touch with a lady who had a little house to let in the high end of the village. The guy who led us to her also invited us to have a homemade dinner at his mum's house and it was great hospitality. He also accompanied us to see the amazing waterfall hidden in the surrounding woods. We had a very interesting conversation with a young guy who run a herbs shop and while we were there his uncle came down from the mountains bringing a load of fresh herbs to dry and sell. I even met a man who was taking care of some stray cats and he understood I was Italian so he started talking to me in Italian! He had lived in Italy for some time years prior and I could get that it was a bit of a bitter story so I didn't inquire much, but to meet someone who spoke my language in such a tiny place lost in the Iranian mountains was a very strange experience. I loved that village (btw it's so nostalgic to see in the doc all the same places I've been to...it's like I'm still there ❤), as I loved my whole visit through Iran, which is an amazing country that keeps on giving in terms of culture and landscapes...neverending wonders. Go visit Iran, you'll find beauty in every corner and beautiful people too. As an Italian I can say I felt at home. They are profoundly aware of their political and social problems, but the majority of them are ashamed of it all and have enough freedom of mind to have learnt how to live in the cracks of the system to try and endure it having the best possible life. They deserve all the best and I hope they'll get there.

Masuleh is on my bucketlist now. Never imagined I'd want to go to Iran. The town is so quaint, old fashioned and the weather is mesmerizing. From the mountain/hill top in Old Masuleh its like walking above clouds. What I found very interesting is that a lot of the words of the Masuleh dialect are common between the Urdu language of India. "Deewar", 'Chashma' 'Mohalla' 'Baazaar' etc. I always thought Urdu was a mix of Arabic n Hindi but now I realize there are a lot of Persian words as well! I love your videos n the bg music is amazing! You have very good taste in music!

What an incredibly interesting town and lifestyle. In the UK in my twenties I worked with an Iranian man Bruce. He was a really nice guy and I always wanted to visit Iran, but never made it despite travelling widely. Age and health problems stop me now. I wish all the worlds warmongering politicians would go away as I think Iran has a lot to offer the rest of the world.

When it comes to cultural diffusion in the Middle East and even Central Asia, Iran has always been the source culture. As a Turkish person, I can say that we adopted the ways of Persians as our ancestors migrated from Central Asia to Anatolia when we met Persians around 10th century. Today it is almost impossible to make a long and meaningful sentence in Turkish without using a few Persian words. Our art, literature and culture, especially culinary culture, is greatly influenced by theirs. Masuleh architectural style which is not only very beautiful but also practical and stable against earthquakes is a product of the Persian intellect.

I grew up in a village in Pakistan where this was the culture of those who lived on the steeper part of the village. Their homes were single-storeyed and to protect the homeowner's privacy, we knew not to go as far as the roof edge, since women frequently used their courtyards. I have seen the same in most northern areas of my country where people live in the mountains, so I think it's common to this landscape.
