when I repair these old radios, I'm giving back their voices and that made me weep a little

I was brought up with these old valve radios and when I left college I became a radio technician. Valve radios have souls and it is so nice to switch one on and wait for the soul to warm up before coming back to life again. The first radios sets I built was in the late 1940s and used 2 volt filament valves. Even today, 70 years later, I love working on valve radios.

I bought an old tube radio from an antique shop a few years ago and use it every morning while I get ready for work to listen to local news and weather. It's not just a decorative item, it's still a useful radio.

many people have no idea how wonderful vacuum tubes sound...even AM in mono radio sounds incredibly deep and rich on a vacuum tube console radio..or even a small table top ....My DVD/TV/VCR etc all go into a vacuum tube amplifier and the sound is out of this world especially for movie music soundtracks ,incredibly rich warm bass frequencies and silky highs... ......and believe me radio is alive and well..... and every night I listen to old radio shows that are played nightly here in Ontario ...like "The Whistler" "Suspense" The Key" ,Inner Sanctum" etc etc... It is great to listen to these shows in the dark especially if the radio has a lighted dial....You can also get low power AM transmitters and actually transmit radio shows /music etc from another source to the radio in another room .... and also believe me I hear Morse code on shortwave all the time...... and interesting music all the time on shortwave coming from India ,China etc or Cuba (Radio Havana) Shortwave is an experience the way it seems to "phase shift" like a wind sound and makes music sound really neat ..........Lately there seems to be people taking radio consoles and removing the vacuum tube chassis (not "the guts" I hate that) .........and turning the cabinet into a bar liquor cabinet etc........or placing a solid state amplifier inside.......really disgusts me...... And there are a zillion videos on Yotube,..... books.... and online antique radio forums on how to repair and restore them....

Everyone talks about “recycling “. Well, when an old radio is repaired (recapped ,etc.), the radio has now been recycled. And ready for another generation [or two] to enjoy. 📻🙂

Seeing this, I remembered when I was around, my grandfather used to listen to radio when we went to our village as there was always electricity issue. And that was last time I saw radio in my house.

Not a better feeling in the world then when you bring one of these things back to life. I get the sense that I am restoring a piece of history. The employees who built these radios may be long gone but the fruits of their labor lives on.

Can't believe some people just throw vintage radios/or ANYTHING VINTAGE in the trash and call it "useless" or too "old" those are the type of people that need to be in the trash and the type I stay away from.

These damn old radios go from a hobby to an obsession before you know what happened. The best thing about it, I think, Is we are actually bringing an important part of history back to life so that future generations can see, touch, operate, use and enjoy that part of history. There is not many historical things that are that involved and personal.

I was called old because I keep a pocket radio on me and not a smart phone. Also I wear a wrist watch.

My grandpa does the same exact thing! His house is FULL of radios and their parts, it's so cool. He finds radios from various parts of Europe as well as the States, and sells them :)

All the beautifull things were already build in the 40's 50's and 60´s. The poetry were refleted on it.

The radios in the video were all made long after FDR had passed away. The fire side chats took place in the 1930s where most of these sets only date to the 50s and early 60s.

Cool I am 14 years old and I work on my 1964 philco tube radio and I fixed it.

I love working on these vintage tube radios, they do have personality and its alot of fun to work on them, and the feeling of achievement when you get them to work and saving them from being thrown away, tube radios are the best ever made.

I used to repair these type of radios in the early 1960s and few models that were still around from the late 1940s, 50s.

Wow I loved vintage radio that works for nostalgic and usable purposes.

I have 3 old Valve Radios from 1950 to 1960 vintage, HMV, Murphy & National EKCO. My hobby was SW DXing and used to listen to VOA, BBC, Radio Australia, Radio Nederland, NHK Japan, Radio Gabon, Radio Austria, Radio Sweden, Swiss Radio International, Radio New Zealand, Radio Srilanka, Radio Moscow, Radio China, Voice of Free China, Radio Iraq, Radio Iran, Radio South Africa etc on the old Valve radio with Long wire Antenna. Great old days of nostalgic valve radios.

I have a 1960 Sony Super sensitivity transistor Radio from my great grandma. Still works. We never met but I think she knew I'd like it :)

fabulous collection of rare vintage radios

I just "took the bait" and bought a floor model Philco 37-650. It isn't working at this time, but I have it sitting on my bench getting ready to dive in head first. I am looking forward to hearing it for the first time! I just hope I don't get carried away and start buying all the old radios I see. Best 73...Dan w4mnc

You do a wonderful job to save this old items. In Germany we have had so many factories, but the design was very often more boring. In the US you have so many different styles and colours, that is really amazing. Here we have no AM stations anymore, only from foreign countries, but German Radios got very early FM when I compare it with Great Britain, France or other countries.

Old radios are cool. I remember when I was young there were correspondence courses advertised in Mechanics Illustrated and Popular Mechanics magazine that taught you how to be a "Radio Engineer". Every once in awhile I come across an old issue at a rummage sale and it takes me back. I get a little misty remembering the old days. And every radio represents the times they were made. The look. The sound. The technology. All unique. And most made here in the USA. Not anymore, for decades. ☹️

I love radio. I grew up in the 80’s and would scan the AM dial on a cold clear night and pick up stations from all over the US. The static and cracks just add character, and today’s sound just doesn’t can’t compare.

Being the owner of a. 100 year old loose coupler. Radio. For the last 40 years I have listened to the army & navy game. it was given to me. When a Elmer was near his reward. Last year as I was cleaing it up to re varnish. I wedged open a small space on its wooden chassis and found documents #1 was the hams name/addr. #2 the date was made. April 24 1921. #3 the kit mfg was Toledo duck. All tucked in and painted over. Now God bless old radios.

Just bought like 8 radios off eBay bc I think they are beautiful and not bc I need a radio. They are smaller and easier to collect, over full in stereo equipment. I’m glad to see others that love collecting radios and that makes me feel not that crazy or obsessed.

I've been in the radio hobby (both collecting and restoring) for over 30 years. I cringe every time I see a listing for a radio on ebay, and the seller says "It doesn't work, probably just needs a tube"---the tubes are rarely at fault. I also don't do repair work for others, because they think 5 minutes with a screwdriver and $20 should cover it----sometimes getting one working properly can take many hours, and even days on rare occasions.

I listen to foreign ,exotic,far away radio stations mostly from china,n.korea,s.korea,usa,turkey,france,spain,rumania on sw and from rumania,hungary and several others on mw and poland on long wave. I like it. Dxing is my hobby. I write letters and e mails to sw,mw stations and get a reply. My favourite sw,mw radio is analog receiver sony icf 704 s,with sw 6-18 mhz and 530-1600 khz on mw .it has no lw ,unfortunately. I collect receivers and qsl cards .

I have a beautiful MCM Kuba teal console I inherited from my grandparents. Still have the original receipt and brochure. Sadly the stereo stopped working decades ago but it’s such a cool piece of furniture and family history I will keep forever. I carefully took out the electronics and installed modern electrics that fit inside with no alterations to the cabinet. I kept the original electronics and speakers. Are these parts worth anything to any one? Hate to recycle it at the depot.

I found a really old portable Julliette radio. I thought it didn’t work a when I first plugged it in, but I slapped it a few times on the top and it started working. So that’s cool I guess

I had a portable radio as a kid & when I put a channel in memory , when I hit the button for that channel, the actual dial would move by itself across to the station & stop. What is that type of radio called? I’ve never seen another and I can’t find it no matter how I look for it. Had chrome trim, the memory buttons was on top. You could hear a motor making the dial move. Thank you.

I have the same feelings as you do about radios ..I surround myself in them ....I just can't fit anymore in the 2 houses I own....I used dtto work for westinghouse in the 60s making color TV 's I was a color tv analyzer fixing the sets that didn't work that the testers rejected..up intill the late 60's and then they made there electronic in Canada...was a sad time for me.....Westinghouse and RCA was very closely related westinghouse would bring in a person from RCA Institute to train us ........and if you look close there are many radios that are similar of RCA and Westinghouse

Hard to imagine but there was once a time when these things were considered the latest high tech, in step with the current fashions of the time, and nearly miraculous what they were able to do. A box speaking like a human or playing beautiful music that originated in some distant place with little but ordinary air between them? Must've bordered on the supernatural!
