Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus use headsets. But KeckCAVES at UC Davis uses projectors to create a virtual reality "cave." Is it the future of VR?

im still not convinced in its functionality.. it would be great for fun&games, but for productivity? not so much.. and what can you do with those 3d scans that you can not in standard 3d editing software?
@x3merx3mer10 жыл бұрын
Josh Krohn you know that VR is not about scanning, but viewing, right? btw, that kind of scanning is far from reallity... and even if it would exist, the doctor doesnt have to be INSIDE of the patient to discover whats wrong with him, he can just as well (and probably even better) view it on a display.

Josh Krohn I agree with everything that you said. Except witchcraft is very real. But yea, I know you were just making a reference to witch hunts.

nemanja milosevic You can measure points in those scans more accurately, faster, and easier, and you can identify, isolate, and extract features of interest much better, in the process increasing the data return from your raw scans by large factors (an order of magnitude is not uncommon). You can also do virtual fieldwork, because you're located in a virtual representation of a real 3D environment, instead of looking at pictures of a 3D environment. There is a fundamental difference how one's brain reacts to either of those media.

Woah maybe I should apply to UC Davis... What's their computer engineering program like?
@okreylos10 жыл бұрын
MAGonzzManifesto The KeckCAVES project is part of the Department of Earth and Physical Sciences (formerly Geology). Software and method development is done by computer scientists, of course, but there is no formal course in VR in the computer science or computer engineering departments. Unfortunately.

I'm a Student of University Stuttgart and we have a cave there. I've been really excited to see it but when we've been there it was very disappointing to me. I don't know where it should be used so much because it's very expansive and takes a lot time to provide data for the cave. The 3D effect wasn't great either which disappointed me the most. I hope it'll get more usage in the future. It's still impressing what's possible today and I'm excited to see what the future will bring.

***** There are CAVEs, and there are CAVEs that work. You probably saw the former instead of the latter. It's a sad fact that the latter kind are much more common.

Next thing I see coming up is mass funding from big fps games like call of duty to create a vr game. Now that is what I would call awesome

Think deeper and understand that you have to take baby steps before you can leap,into a fully immersive and tether free augmented reality future.

LizardanNet If you asked the scientists who couldn't do their work without VR, they'd probably tell you that VR has been a thing for ten years or so.

Well, it seems you have been incorrect. According to Statistica, the total number of VR users is expected to reach 171 million by the end of the year.

How can this be the future of VR? C.A.V.E s are the past of vr, have been around for a decade or so, and so expensive that only public organizations or corporations can afford one. I have experienced 2 of these C.A.V.E.s , and the experience was better than the DK2, but not too far off.
@okreylos10 жыл бұрын
ManuelGarridoPena CAVEs were invented in 1991, so they've been around longer than you think. They're not the long-term future of VR, they're the past and present and immediate future of usable VR until HMDs catch up, which might not take very long. But without CAVEs, there would have been hardly any VR research in the last 20 years.
