They were in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for their swan song and they did not disappoint. On the heels of our nation's 239th birthday, 12-time champion The Vocal Majority busted out John Philip Sousa's magnum opus "The Stars and Stripes Forever" to the delight of 5,000+ barbershoppers at CONSOL Energy Center. And, if that wasn't enough, they invited 1990 Quartet Champion Acoustix to join in the fun.
Whether you're a fan of barbershop or not, it's a must-see.

matrix86 Thanks Matrix86. I didn't want to sound too critical, i love both. However , Acoustics did not fare very well. I was cringing at the sound. They are a fabulous Quartet.

This is an unfortunate recording. I was there to see this live and it didn't sound anything like this. Much more in tune, and the tenor didn't stick out much at all. Very weird.

Walter White I know that they had monitor issues in the beginning of the song. You can hear how much reverb there is and that might have caused them to lose pitch in spots.

ThePurv Sorry. They are Gold Medalists There is no excuse. They also had 1 full year to prepare. No real need for mics. They simply failed. Look at the Chorus members. They new as well. This performance sucked. Sorry.

I'm from the UK and putting aside tuning issues, I can say that I understood every word that was sung. Barbershop can teach much to other forms of choral singing regarding diction.

Acoustix is one of the greatest, most versatile quartets ever to step on a barbershop stage, I think the issue with this performance was partly due to aging voices, but I'd place more blame on the board operator and recording mixer. Todd's tenor did stand out quite a bit, but each singer had his own microphone. A few adjustments would've made the mix a lot better. But, as the great lead Yoda once said: "when 25 years champion you've been, sing this good you will not.”

Allow me to clear up a few misconceptions. This audio is raw and completely unmixed, and should NEVER have been uploaded without doing some very basic part balancing first. Presumably, there was a rush to get this performance uploaded in time for the 4th of July holiday. There was no sound check, at least for Acoustix. S&S was also not planned for this slot, but was a late substitution for another VM (religious) tune that did not come together as quickly as originally hoped. Acoustix stopped singing S&S years ago. Regardless, I did not bring my best to the stage that night and for that I am truly sorry. Check out some samples of four new songs from our new "All the Best" CD on SoundCloud that were recorded earlier this year. You will not be disappointed.

Todd, you guys were the first group I ever heard do S&S. I remember when you came to the Buckeye Invitational and sang this many years ago. There are songs you will just always associate with certain quartets and this is one of mine for Acoustix. I was sitting in the audience in Pittsburgh and I was just thrilled to hear you do it again.

I've never heard this as a vocal performance. I sympathize with your concerns about the audio issues, however, I thoroughly enjoyed this, and after hearing your concerns, I enjoyed it better the second time. Thanks for sharing.

Todd...it's a great LIVE performance and I enjoyed it and did not even think about any flaws until reading your comment. Almost 100,000 views? I think it's great and in all do respect I think you are overly concerned and just need to let it go, because it is an absolutely amazing performance and I and a lot of people love it just the way it is!!!! Carry on my friend.

I love the legacy of the Vocal Majority live on. Greg, you are doing a great job following in your Fathers Footsteps. I’m 83, and was in all the graded choirs that your Grandmother directed at,Ingleside Baptist Church. Shreveport , LA. She instilled in me and my two brothers the love of great Godly music. I’m forever grateful. (All the teenage girls (including me, had a crush on Jimmy Clancy and Tom Pennell ( the pastors son).

I'm not much of a fan of most barbershop quartets, but the mass pieces are always chill bump worthy.

That’s exactly how I feel. I’ll support quartets for their art, but it’s extra special to me to hear the larger groups blending so many voices together and achieving harmony.

It's 25 years after the popular version carried elsewhere on YT and a little rough in spots (particularly the falsetto) but Ox can still bring it. Good job, chorus.

Unfurl the banner and raise it to the sky! Let Eagle cry from mountain high the never-ending watch word of our nation. Now behold this gem of old, the wonder of the Western sky. The emblem of the brave and true, the flag of our liberty, flag of our destiny. Red and white and starry blue stream out of the banner so high. Every heart will sing a part as all across the land we raise our voices. Far and near, for all to hear, the echo of a chorus grand! Every heart will swell with pride to sing of our liberty, sing of our destiny. As with joy we now extol the flag waving over the land. Let us all hail the flag in one accord, let us cheer it with fervid elation. It's the flag of the martyrs gone before, it's the flag of flags, the banner of our nation. It's a beacon for all who share our dream of a new day without domination. It's the hope of the peoples now oppressed and a symbol of their own emancipation. Hooray for the flag of the free! May it wave as our standard forever. The gem of the land and the sea, ever hoist it proud and high. All nations remember the day when our fathers with mighty endeavor proclaimed as they marched to the fray that by their might and by their right, it waves forever. Every time the people hear the bell of freedom calling, (calling) one and all. Every living patriotic citizen will answer, (answer) freedom's call. Everywhere the bold and gallant souls come forth to bear the cross of duty. Rising up as one to fight and die behind the flag of freedom's beauty. Patriotic hearts will falter never, following the stars and stripes forever. Marching to the quest, to east or west, they quell distress, the freed oppressed cry out. Hooray for the flag of the free! May it wave as our standard forever. The gem of the land and the sea, ever hoist it proud and high. All nations remember the day when our fathers with might endeavor proclaimed as they marched to the fray, "Defended by our might, ever standing for the right, it waves forever!" Hail to the banner that waves the stars and stripes, we give our lives for Stars and Stripes!

Sheesh. Tough crowd . Other than Todd I don't see any other gold medalists in here, and certainly no icons of barbershop like Acoustix. Tech issues happen, unfortunately quite often on the BHS international stage. Look at any time a chorus has a quartet vignette in their package, the mics are NEVER on in time. And there is plenty more examples where that came from. I know this is the Internet, but maybe show some dang respect.

Wow! They say you can hear an extra voice in good barbershop, but this is ridiculous! Seriously, how do that many singers get that close and tight harmonically? And to the critics complaining that every note wasn't perfect, that's what you get with a live performance -- not everything's studio-mixed and digitally-available. When you're sitting there in a venue, with only an amplifier between you and the singers' vocal cords, there's this thing called 'analog' that comes into play....
