Ernie Anderson recording promos at ABC's post production 6 on their Prospect Studios lot in Hollywood, the same lot where I started working a decade later. Ernie was my mentor, but I think that I made him nervous during this shoot. Ernie was definitely a one-of-a-kind VO talent and was the father of Paul Thomas Anderson.
I hung out w/Ernie starting in '89, and he told me about his one big acting job in Hollywood, appearing in a GUNSMOKE episode in the mid 60's (he said that he hated his performance). I've never been able to find the episode, but you can hear an improvised interview. that Ernie recorded w/the cast at the following youtube clip. Growing up in the 80s, Ernie was the "voice" then. I don't think there is another voice that instantly brings back the feels the way that Ernie Anderson's does. It's just special.

To say he was the Don LaFontaine of his time might be a misnomer. Ernie was the last of the big network guys who hung their hat in a post room like that for ten hours a day. Danny Dark was another. I heard Ernie was making $2M in the 70s and early 80s...so I can only imagine what he was making toward the end of his life. A pleasure to hear...always.

Wow! I'm just 47, and I remember listening to him on ABC when I was a kid. And he was already an Icon in the industry. I have a Whole new respect for what he did for all those years. Unbelievable.

Seen February 12, 2019. Hard to believe it's been 22 years since one of the finest voiceover gentleman left the earth. Fred Silverman, at ABC at the time made him a household voice!!! The rest is history. This format is history for television, and future generations to come. Mr. Hahn Los Angeles California

This is a GREAT inside look at the golden age of big-time network voiceovers, circa 1980's. It takes me back to my own days of working frequently with crusty yet lovable Ernie as studio manager of Mel Blanc Audiomedia, Beverly Hills. Before there was Don Lafontaine, Ernie was the king. He wanted no part of on-camera commercial fame. "I don't want to float in the crapper as the Tidy Bowl man!" he told me. Awesome post - thanks! Chuck McKibben voice artist/VO coach, voiceoverisland.

This is precious. Love the process. Guys like Stu Tracy (KPHO-TV 5, PHX), Alec Webb (Maryland Public Television) and Ernie helped this stuttering, Southern boy with his speech growing up in the early-80's.

That is the voice I associate the most with ABC and have been imitating him for years without knowing who he is. One of the greatest voice-overs in history. I actually practice this voice saying stuff like "At 8:30, Latka goes crazy on Taxi, and at 9, Vegas. It all happens here Friday nights on ABC"

Oddly enough, pro-tools appears to have been invented around the time of the video, 1989-ish.

Actually, Pro Tools wouldn't be much help in this case. Ernie was having trouble because there's too much copy than easily fits between the dialogue of the video segments. That's a problem because the promo is already cut to its proper length; they can't open up any space. And they can't change the copy on their own; they'd have to get a copywriter to do it. 😉

@VoiceoverIsland That's awesome, Ernie had a voice that could cut glass. We don't seem to have those anymore, everyone sounds too smooth and nice. I remember as a kid in the 80s, Ernie doing the ABC voice overs. Like the ABC Sunday Night Movie for JAWS, or SUPERMAN. Now THAT'S an announcer.

We earlier knew Ernie Anderson in Cleveland on WJW TV. He played the character Ghoulardi which often included Tom Conway (Tim was his stage name in Hollywood).

Thats the way it was done. It's called WORK. And doing the voice over several times is what's called practice makes perfect. And what we don't see here is how many times he likely did things in ONE take. But that would be too boring for us to watch 20+ years later now would it. That man was a MASTER of his craft. He paved the way for today's computer edited piece meal assembly production methods todays quickie generation enjoys today.

I loved his voice and appreciated all his promos, his sound and style were definitely unique, which is what made ABC stand out so much compared to today's copycat styles, It's too bad he was a perpetual cynic. Sure, there are people who wrote bad copy but if you've watched enough of these videos of him you'll see that it was just a matter of a few takes to make it work. What a chore admittedly to non-linear editing in DAW's today.

Ernie wasn't having a very good day here. I've seen that WONDER YEARS episode, as I remember Margaret Farquhar's name, but I don't recall ever seeing any of the other shows. These programs were originally aired on ABC on Tuesday, May 2, 1989.

I used to do similar types of promos for Fox Kids (Sat morning cartoons) and getting it to time can certainly be a beeeatch! We had by then gone all digital, so (although you always try and avoid it) we now have the ability to add a tiny bit of "time compression, (to squeeze the audio to fit picture). This could have made this session go MUCH smoother (and faster with less frustration:-) That said the video was indeed edited badly as Mr. Anderson pointed out.

alman54 Yes indeed. The folks involved in audio and video back then had incredible creativity and mind bending skills! With today's tools a monkey can do it and make a moron who can't carry a tune in a feed bucket pass for a singer - sort of. But they can't give it the heart. Sorry - back on point, Ernie was one cool customer. Loved him as Ghoulardi and I'm happy that he was able to parley his great voice and wonderful personality into a highly lucrative life-long career!

No, digital stuff doesn't help you practice your lines and record Ernie-Anderson-quality stuff "in seconds". Computers don't make individuals perform faster with the same results, they're just easier to use than tape. People get really weird ideas about 'digital' sometimes and this is one of those times. It isn't magic.
