The Volca Drum Randomizer is Awesome!
Today we're taking a look at the Volca Drum's randomizer, and why I think it's awesome! The Volca Drum is a pretty deep and complex device, offering an almost endless amount of sound design possibilities. While 3rd party editors, like "Synthmata" from fellow creator "Oscillator Sink" do exist, it can be kind of a pain to constantly connect the Volca Drum to a computer whenever you want to get new sounds. The built in randomizer helps to alleviate this issue, offering options to randomize both the sound itself, and the sequenced rhythm for that sound. Combine this with the layer select function on the Volca Drum, and you can lose hours at a time to just generating random patches and layers over and over again! Enjoy the video :)

A nice Tip that I have not seen often is when you turn the gain of a layer down it acts as a dry wet knob so you can only hear the wave guide part of the layer. With that you can create some ambient noises

One of the features is that each sound can be panned. So hard left or right gives a 2 channel out from the stereo output. Great for mixing desks and effects.

lol same here. I got it thinking it was going to be this Uber versatile drum machine...but it's not... it's alrite... It doesn't hold a candle to my UNO drum...and that's not even a drum synth...

All synths with digital patch recall should have a randomise feature like this. It’s surprising how many don’t. It’s such a useful feature for sound designing. I remember spending dozens of hours playing with the randomise function on my MicroKorg.

man i love volcas , they pack a lot of features in the drum , i didnt think they would pack that much into one volca, for the price they offer a lot , i just have the sample and the bass right now, but im definitely getting this next, i especially love the touch buttons for the sequencer, which is the same for all of the volcas, its so responsive , truly an excellent use of touch capacitive buttons, id have to say thats my favorite part of the volcas

volca drum is a machine (literally). The only crappy thing about volca drum is that it never sells cheap second hand so I don't have a second one yet.

Hi FB. I *think* the point of your video is simply to demonstrate the use of the randomiser functionality to create sonic variants on one time basis (ie each time you touch the randomiser button) but what I’m wondering is if there is a way to use the randomiser in real time within a sequence? Say for example you have sound A from a kit on every 4th step. Can each of those 4 steps be auto-randomised individually? I guess I’m wildly off the mark with this idea but as all of my volcas are under utilised right now, I’m still working on the basics. Thanks for the demo anyway (PS a pre-owned volca modular arrived in the post today on I’d best shift my focus). Cheers. Lee

Hi sir, I have a Volca Drum too and thought I could get past the limitations of the Drum by using the sequencer on the Keystep I have (I have the old one). I'm trying to figure out a workflow for it but I'm thinking the sequencer on the Keystep would be too limited, becauz all the notes would have to be the same note duration wouldn't they? So would that mean they would all have to be 8ths or 16ths and not able to do trappy hi-hat stuff? What is it like for you to use them both? Is there like a trick to get past this?

I honestly haven't used the Keystep's sequencer with the Volca Drum yet, but I think you'd be correct.

It's a pain to set up, but I strongly recommend, a good sequencer, laptop, or desktop, I'm that old. Looks like a year since you posted this, hope you figured something out

It has a chance and conditions for the sequencer, but not a random patch generator. You can basically set the LFO to random, but that can only be routed to one source. Thanks for watching!
