I got back from the volcano early this morning and got a bit lucky since the area was closed a few hrs. later due to all the burning moss up there. We have never before witnessed such a problem in my country, and it didn't help the Coast Guard helicopter to have drones blocking its way while trying to put out the fire. So the region will be closed today, Friday. The situation will be reassessed Saturday morning and yes it's a bummer, however, this volcano isn't stopping soon, let me tell you that! so stay cool :) The governments is speaking of ways to make the route up there shorter, and believe me, after last night, hiking from 10PM to 08 Am with all my gear, i sure would appreciate it. But the footage was worth the trip like you will see in the next days :)

I mean, those people are at least avoiding the fissure line. In another drone video, you could see lots of people just casually walking over days old lava and crossing the fissure line, where new vents can open at any moment. One person was suicidal enough to stand right on top of a spot where smoke was spewing out of the ground right next to the main crater. For context, smoke is literally the only sign you get before a blast of lava opens a new vent.

You didnt watch closely then, there were at least 20 people on the fresh lava barely 24 hours after eruption started. And the ones you see in this footage are on the fissure line, because this line is not just a few meters wide.

Fingers crossed no harm befalls anyone's reckless behaviour, and I would love to hear honest options from Icelandic search and rescue! Love your videos and greetings from Scotland Gylfi!

Search and rescue team member here👋 We are there mostly to warn people about certain dangers before they get into actual trouble but in certain cases we just have to let it happen. If people take walks on new lava and get into trouble, that is their own problem as there is really no way to help them as no one is going to follow them for obvious reasons and the helicopter most likely can’t save them either. The area has been closed of for now because of smoke and gases but people some people are still careless enough to go anyways. A small minority of people also try to argue with the SAR people and some of us have been called names by some of the visitors but thankfully, most of the people I encountered were reasonable to enough to back of when advised to to so.

@@arnijonsson8651 Hello Árni! Pleasure to speak to you. I absolutely agree with you and your colleagues decision. While Scotland has no current active volcanoes it is still amazing to learn about the active ones close to home. I'm glad some people are listening to your advice but I'd hate to see what happens when the worst happens with some very silly tourist who isn't familiar with the behaviours of volcanoes. As unfortunately it'll be volunteers, and people such as yourself who will be blamed by officials for anyone's silly behaviour. Having visited Iceland multiple times it truly is amazing how the locals handle problems with such a small population in comparison to the vast tourism (Myself I'm from the highlands in Scotland and our main problems generally are tourists climbing our mountains ill prepared for the harsh conditions at higher altitude). It would be an absolute honor on my next visit to perhaps meet you and volunteer to help your wonderful S&R team! Take care out there Árni and thank you for your insight into how things are over there. Have a great day!

I remember back in Season 1 (or maybe it was Season 2?) where one of the tourists was clambering around on the hot crust with lava seething beneath. It's like some tourists don't have a sense of scope, the cool selfie wins out over common sense. If the lava crumbles beneath your feet and you're plunged into a sea of lava there are no do-overs, and if you are "rescued" you'll likely regret your decision for the days left to you before you die from your injuries. Kind of reminds me of those folks who go to the Grand Canyon and fall in taking a selfie. When hubby and I went to the Grand Canyon I was amazed at the lack of protective barriers. There were signs, and some fencing, but it's really not possible to fence the whole thing. I walked up to the edge, saw the scope, and immediately vomited and counted down the minutes before we could leave. Those are beautiful shots though. I remember when the first volcano was just Bob.

@LadyLithias
@LadyLithias Жыл бұрын
@@Thyalwaysseek Oh, I know. We get idiots at Yellowstone in the United States who end up thinking they can jump in thermal ponds and shocked when they get roasted to death. The only "temporary" rescue from a sea of lava would be if, for example, two people are being idiots and one breaks through and the other pulls them out before they get instantly dead, just to have them suffer greatly before dying anyway. It's not outside the realm of possibilities.... but it's all stupid no matter what!

One of my observations about Iceland is that they will generally show you what is safe and unsafe (for example, using ropes and signs), but they will not prevent you from doing something stupid. In the USA, we have to erect physical barriers to prevent people from going where they should not.

With the last volcano, I saw a video of a tourist who decided to hike up the side of the volcano while it was on break to look into the crater. It's a genuine miracle there have been no fatalities. People have been insanely reckless w this and I feel like it's only a matter of time before either everyone near it gets killed or someone or a small group but sooner or later this laxidasical behavior is going to result in the loss of human life and its going to be yet another preventable tragedy. Watching from a distance w a zoom lens, cool, walking up to a new volcano as it's in its first days, and trusting you believe all its gonna do is what it's doing now...thats just ignorance and ego is what that is. It's definitely not intelligent behavior!

It won't work. Too many humans seem to believe that they are lords & masters of Mother Earth and invincible. As far as they are concerned, they will do whatever they like, even if that endangers someone else. And they'll fight anyone who tries to stop them, even if it's to save their own lives. They call that "Freedom". We've got a country half-full of people like that here in the U.S. Although the rest of us call their behavior idiocy. Idiots have neither self-respect nor respect for anything else. And they are always so surprised when it turns out that their actions were wrong. Assuming that they live through the experience.

@@JustIcelandicserious question: Are there any regulations or recommendation about how close people can (or cannot get)? I recall in 2022 the same comments were made, but as far as I know more people got in trouble getting lost that because of lava. This videos seem like cheap clickbait for “armchair explorers”. A couple of things: distances on high power lenses are distorted and people MAY look much closer than they truly are. Second, basaltic eruptions are rarely explosive and the 2021, 2022 events showed it is relatively safe to be quite close to the lava. If you would not dare to go to such places fine, don’t do it, but it seems ignorant and misinformed to call all those people “idiots”.
@kennashey
@kennashey Жыл бұрын
@@Petrvsco Look up lava bombs. They happen even with non-explosive eruptions. Just because this didn't erupt the way that Mt St Helens did, does not mean that it is safe to be close. There are vents that are allowing gases from underground to come up (which can not been seen until one is standing on top of...), as well as smoke from the moss fires. This posses some interesting risks, such as a person might step into the fissure and break an ankle, thus needing to be carried 10k (perhaps more...) to the closet area with highway access. If it is more serious, then a medivac flight might be needed and landing the chopper would be dangerous with the drones flitting about...

In some of the videos posted by other reporters, I heard a lot of Icelandic spoken by the people gathering around the main vent of this latest eruption. That leads me to believe it's not just "Tourist Troubles" in that area but rather locals willing to risk their lives for a high reward.

It really doesn't help the safety argument when you have one of Icelands own Volcano Guide tours actively encouraging people to climb up and take pics on the black lava only a day or two old!! Those tour groups and guides need to have something done about them.

2-3 hrs before uploaded this, and finalised the text, this issue was once again in the local news, or it's just a matter of time before we send someone home in the crispy form, and could we do better? I think so...

At 0:53 the isolated plumes of steam to the right of the volcano, roughly 1/2 way up the screen, are coming from fissures in the ground that have not yet produced any lava. ( GT showed them in one of his videos and rapidly left the area.) There are other similar fissures nearby. The last geological report I heard stated that the pressure in the magma chamber continues to rise. If walking on fresh lava doesn't produce a crispy idiot I am sure a sudden release of lava from these fissures will catch many unawares, possibly closing off escape routes for lava walkers. No wonder they have decided to close the site until Saturday. Thanks you for allowing us all to see this fantastic Icelandic feature.

They better not try this if hekla goes off. Hekla is not as forgiving as the peninsula.
@JustIcelandic

Thats right, the peninsula is not as violent as the larger systems but from time to time, those eruptions send out deadly splashes, and thats whet we worry about
@Mars-ev7qg

@@JustIcelandic it's only a matter of time before Hekla blows. The same thing goes for Katla. Both of those volcanoes have been way too quiet for way too long. It's a lot like Mauna Loa in Hawaii. It was quiet 38 years when it's normally only quiet for 3 to 6 years. It finally went in late 2022. No one knows what sidelined Mauna Loa for so long or what it will do next. But getting back to Iceland, Hekla, and Katla are very dangerous volcanoes. I'm worried people have forgotten what those mountains are capable of because they have been quiet for so long. Seeing people get away with particularly foolish things at this volcano might further encourage them to take risks around Hekla when it blows. It absolutely is a matter of when not if hekla will erupt again.

Not just cinematic Gylfi, _symphonic_ cinematic Gylfi! Thank you sir. I appreciate the amazing imagery with the idiots circled for us to see. The competition for the Darwin Awards has ramped up spectacularly. I pray and hope they are safe and "tool-ish" instead of just being tools.

People acting like this are just annoying. They have no idea what risks they are putting themselves and others in. I'm a geologist and was there but on the hill at a safe distance and away from the smoke and gases. And I left as soon as the wind changed and the situation became too risky. For my own safety, but also not to put more strain on the rescue forces.

As I was told by a friend many years ago "you can't educate pork"!!! It won't belong before some one dies from the lava or the gas and then the cry will go out that nobody told anyone it would be dangerous. I think it's a mad rush to be the first to post a selfie on social media that causes this stupidity. I only watch your channel as you go about things in a correct and sensible manner.... and I love your sense of humour. Best wishes from a damp Herefordshire, U.K.
