The Volunteers: Answering the Call of History

Toldot Yisrael (www.toldotyisrael.org) presents the stories of volunteers from around the world who came in 1948 to help build and defend the State of Israel.
"You came to us when we needed you most, during those difficult, uncertain days in our War of Independence. You gave us not only your experience, but your lives as well. The people of Israel and the State of Israel will never forget, and will always cherish, this unique contribution made by you -- the volunteers of Machal."

This movie is the third episode in the "Eyewitness 1948" short film series produced by Toldot Yisrael and the History Channel. It is the centerpiece of an educational pilot program developed with The iCenter and made possible through the generous support of the Jim Joseph Foundation and others.

May Hashem always protect and guard the State of Israel. Thank you guys so much for all you´ve done- now Jews have a home, finally- and no one is gonna get us out of there! Truly the "greatest generation"

And some volunteers died trying to get to Israel. George "Buzz" Beurling, was a Canadian fighter pilot who signed on to fight for Israel. On the way, he was killed when his plane crashed trying to land in Rome. He was originally buried in Rome, but in 1950, he was re-interred in a military cemetery at the foot of Mount Carmel near the city of Haifa.

These stories are so priceless. Thank God all the memories have been recorded so that we can read today what they endured , the joys and sorrows, to build the State of Israel. It has never been easy but you have thousands of us to love and support you.I'm a Christian and will never forget Yeshua was an observant Jew.

Inspiring stories as we pause to reflect on the meaning of Yom HaZikaron and we remember all those men and women, including the 123 volunteers, who have given their lives to create and defend the State of Israel. May their memories be a blessing to us all. עם ישראל חי

A wonderful film. Too little is known about those who volunteered. Among them were those in New York, members of various organozations, including Agudath Israel, who were taken to clandestine locations to load crates marked "farm machinery" with guns and munitions for shipment to Israel. All the volunteers deserve our thanks and blessings.

Am Yisrael chai! These people are true heros and mensches! There are many in my old Shul who faught in the war of independence. Hashem truly has blessed us by giving us our Home back!

This was an inspiration, the kind we need each and every day! Ha Tivkvah! We thank Hashem for those who saved Jews and brought them to safety after the horrors of the Shoa, fought for the fledgling state, fought for our beloved Eretz Yisrael after 1948 and continue to protect and defend our beloved land. Am Yisrael Chai!

Chana Kojiebrodski Lieberman was born september 15 1918- from a large and extended family - 5 brothers and sisters- at 18 they were gone- she was alone. Israel was her love- it represented the 1st and last refuge for Jews. If only Israel was born in 1938 and not 1948 there would have been support and defence for Jews who faced the Holocaust and anti Semitism that prevailed throughout Europe and the world. Chana was the last of her family. The only survivor. She passed away 04-24 2011.

Am Yisrael chai! HaShem has given us 64 wonderful years! A fellow in my synagogue (Dov Chetner), was one of the Canadians who went over to join the Haganah. Vidal Sasoon is Jewish? I never knew that.

Those who will not defend Yisrael or Yerushalayim are those not interested in what the good and wise plan of Elohim is. But Yahuah will defend Yisrael and Yerushalayim shall not be obliterated, yet the enemies against Messiah shall the birds feast upon as Yahusha returns to earth to set up His Kingdom in Yisrael. Watch for a seven year peace deal with Yisrael and the First Beast who causes people to receive his Mark where without it you cannot buy nor sell. Thanks for listening, 777denny

I love Zion because My LORD loves Zion. He has placed it above His chief joy. He alone is the cornerstone of Zion and He will dwell there among His people when He returns to deliver all Israel from all her enemies. Even so-Maranatha_ come quickly LORD Jesus.
