Here in the Waterloo Ia area there were alot of small farms. John Deere always wanted to have good row crop tractors to fill that need. They never saw a need to get into high horsepower till the 90s. As you know the 8850 had problems. Thanks for sharing. John T. Spent alot of time in an 8640, great tractor.
@lynwessel24719 ай бұрын
All of the pre 60 series had the potential problem due to the engine block being a frame component. If you ever drove over terrain where the front axle hit the stop it put twisting force on the engine. They had a lot of problems with blown head gaskets. Kinze had his repower engines for those tractors mounted in a sub frame. The 8850s V8 engine was very reliable in stationary applications.

Cool old Wagner pretending to be JD. The factory was in Portland, OR so my guess is they were built initially for the logging industry. Two quick things: 1) Almost every farm or ranch yard has an old straight truck with a rack of some sort on it. It seldom gets used but is kept running. It's kept because more often than not "grandpa bought it new in '62" or some such. 2) I have rarely met a farmer or rancher who isn't a Christian. They live by their faith, in more ways than one. I love the Cross in the farmyard.

Tractor Data says 23 green WA - 14s and 28 green WA-17s were sold. I have a limited edition precision 16th scale JD model WA- 17. Cost me over 300 bucks. My opinion they should have bought and improved this design instead of going with the 7520 thru 8850 design with the engine block part of the frame. JD finally figured that out for the 60 series 20 years later.
