They were the breed of horse that took Australian diggers into battle, and now they're faced with mass destruction. They're called Walers - nuggetty, tough animals which are amongst the hundreds of thousands of wild horses roaming Australia's outback. The Walers were once the nation's pride and, in their day, their tireless performance on the battlefield earned them the reputation as the best cavalry horses in the world. The trouble now is that they're a real menace to property owners who say they have no real choice but to shoot or trap them. There is, however, a chance to save the Walers as Jennifer Byrne found when she toured the outback for this touching story.
