The Walk

I'm joined by Phil as we take a circular walk around the stunning Amber Valley in Derbyshire.
The three picturesque villages of Ashover, Fallgate and Milltown were once industrial powerhouses, and Phil and I headed out to find the remains of that industrial past.
We start at Gregory Lead Mine, built in 1734 and once the most productive mine in the UK. A chimney still remains, as well as lead shafts and a mass of spoil heaps.
Then we're on to Overton Hall, once the home of Royal society head and Captain Cook explorer, Sir Joseph Banks, where Phil has an industrial history surprise for us.
Then we climb up to Fallgate quarry before dropping down towards to River Amber where we explore natural caves, the Ashover Light Railway, and hidden lime kilns. One of which we didn't even know was there, but stumbled upon.
From there we visit a blue lagoon quarry, Fallgate Mill, more remains of the Ashover Light Railway, more lime kilns, before finally coming across the remains of Fallgate station.
Built in 1925, and still standing firm.
So much to see on this explore. I hope you enjoy.

Mate, I think this is one of the best walks you've filmed....we've walked a lot around here when our lads were younger., the quarries around Ashover (and the walk up to Ashover Rock).....started & finished at The Old Poets Corner in the village. Incredible how much history there is around there & huge respect to Phil for his research & expertise ...fantastic to see the lite rail embankment....back in the day when we walked around there I wouldn't have had a clue.... Many Thanks

@@IckeWalks Yes, I walk the 5 pits, but haven't looked too much into the history. I'm sure there will be stories of the collieries and lines. I've been here 30 years, but grew up in Barlborough, so used to play on the old train lines there 'the monies'! All getting built on now. 😔

Loved this video and the efforts you make. Another old industrial place to stomp would be the old Coking plant at wingerworth. A lot of this site has been reclaimed and there’s housing but might be worth an explore.

Wow there's so much going on around there! Them lime kilns are a bit fancy pants ain't they. You gotta get Phil a microphone he's got lots of interesting stuff to say! My Dad borrowed a friends Morgan plus 8 an was driving to Belper with my mum in the early hours an they saw the Belper Yeti?! which my dad renamed beti! It may have been some geezer in a big sheepskin coat as they where all the Go back in the 70,s along with look at me an my Platforms! Derbyshire has got it all going on! I grew up there but so very different again from your stomps, it's a very varied place. I had promised myself to be more normal in my comments but it's a permanently ensconced affliction, err. Can you get a PO box so we can send you junk I mean useful stuff. Can you swim in them lagoons? I suppose you could leave a bit of chromed metal in emm an if it's stripped best give em a miss. Cheers fantastic great fun.
