Dear Dr Marc and Emily Kinney Thank you, thank you for doing this interview for all the artists and actors out there! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼 This video spoke to me in various ways. There were times I felt really touched by Emily’s experiences and felt the need to pause and reflect on moments and memories of rejection in my life as a now part-time actor. My key takeaways: 1. Artists feel many emotions. Thank you for actually saying this! As part of our training performing artists have to learn how to express a nuanced range of emotion to be able to express the different and detailed emotions of a certain character living under a certain circumstance or a dancer telling a story in movement…so yes performers feel and have to simulate many emotions. Performers also have to live and socialise with people who don’t have a wide range of emotional expression…it’s hard to always explain what you mean or not be labelled as “the dramatic one”. I think this made me realise just how different the emotional range and emotional literacy artists/performers have because their training comprised lots of emotional work. 2. I loved the moment Emily shared about realising how she repetitively wrote about a toxic person or unhealthy habit - the act of writing the same things coerced her to change that habit because she didn’t want to be writing about this person or habit again. This was powerful for me. That’s amazing and I am applauding you! 3. I left full time acting because I needed a consistent income, so i am acquainted with rejection and as a part time actor who takes advantage of auditions that suit my schedule now and then, I still deal with rejection. How do I cope with it? I usually vent or talk about it with loved ones, I journal and scrapbook about it, reminding myself that “this story wasn’t meant for me to tell, but there are other stories out there”. I am also lucky enough to transition from rejection to movement by grading papers or prepping a class so rejection is a smoother recovery for me now. However, when I was a full time actor it was very difficult because I did not have another option, I would be very hard on myself for not getting the part. I now have come to realise that when there are acting opportunities I will take them and enjoy the audition. If I get rejected it’s okay I gave a good audition, if I get it, then that’s lovely. I’ve come to see rejection as part of the actors life, if I want to be an actor in academia I’ve got to find ways around accepting that I do not have control over the artistic vision of others, just mine. I’ve learnt to understand that writing and studying about the potential of acting, performance and reading for other social development causes also makes me feel like I am contributing to the field in a different way now. Thank you Emily!! Play on!!
