The Definitive “Start to Finish” Edition of my Walking Dead video essay, in which I discuss issues of POWER, SANITY, PHILOSOPHY, COMMUNITY, and STRENGTH in AMC’s television series, “The Walking Dead." I present evidence supporting the argument that we are already living in the apocalypse.
The purposes of this cut of the video essay were to give it the polish I thought it deserved and celebrate The Walking Dead’s 100th episode milestone, which aired on the day this video was uploaded. Enjoy!
Timestamps:

Part 2 (Sanity) - 14:53
Part 3 (Philosophy) - 23:46
Part 4 (Community) - 32:28

Conclusion - 50:33

Corrected statements I made in the video: (1) Frank Darabont was the original showrunner for The Walking Dead, not Glen Mazzara. (2) Most experts now recognize that nature AND nurture contribute to personality development. (3) Other social mammals establish dominance hierarchies. This phenomenon is not exclusive to humans. (4) Not all religions believe in life after death. FAQ: Q: What is the name of the song used in the conclusion? A: Ben Howard - Oats in the Water I will update this list as needed. Thank you to my viewers for holding me accountable and pointing out some of my mistakes.

Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism. The ironic thing most religion monotheistic, and paganism actually believe in afterlife. Their is only one religion in context of creation. This is islam. Ignoramuses will say 'islam came about 1400 yrs ago. But learned men who understand arabic know for a fact that islam is the defacto religion for mankind and Jin not the the alchohol called Jin but the sentient life forms called Jin. Every prophet is a muslim, And the sharia law reflected their time and place, the final sharia law is for all time, Via Prophet Muhammad (saw) time until the day of judgement. People will deny or accept this. But the reality doesn't care. It will be accepted in the end regardless.

Yeah but Glenn was never a successful leader. He was interim Leader at the prison briefly after Rick went crazy and Daryl bounced. He abandoned the group when the Governor arrived so he wasn't there to help defend because he was hot-headed. The 2nd time he was a leader was accidentally after the fall of the prison in the group with Abe. But his entire reason for "leading", which he didnt even actively do, was selfish: to find Maggie. And the next time he's in a position of leadership, he is on a run with a group that mostly dies. Everyone but Heath, Scott, Michonne, and Glenn died under Glenn's direction. He ain't a natural leader, even if he is sane.

@@onetallpheeesh While I agree Glen isnt a leader by character and nature, I dont think death numbers speak to ricks capability as a leader. Rick lost so many people under his leadership idk if anyone is even keeping count anymore, and Glenn is included in the Ricks ego getting the better of him victims. Multiple times even, until it ended up getting him killed. tho I find it funny that the 2 dudes that really had leadership in the group were both cops, used to being listened to and enforcing rules and hierarchy. Again, I agree Glenn isnt great leadership material, in the end hes one of the youngest adults in the group, mostly happy go lucky gamer city boy, that has adapted increadibly in surviving this world and learned so much. They would really have to mess with him characterwise in order for his personality and experience fit being a leader.

I always found it fascinating that a character’s ability to compartmentalize and the strength of their dedication to their personal philosophy (that they truly know and are unconflicted about who they are and what they believe) tends to lend to the length of their survivability. These traits allow people to act without hesitation and in TWD, where survival can come to split second decisions, they are the most capable. The question then becomes what happens when the ultimate pragmatist (Negan) meets the ultimate idealist (Rick) or the ultimate nihilist (The Governor).

When Morgan says, "I have to clear.", he's not talking about clearing his conscience. He's referring to the death of his son. He blames himself for his son's death because he didn't clear the whole house. He never cleared the basement. And then his son went down there and got bit. So afterwards Morgan became obsessed with going around and clearing every house he comes across. That is what he meant by, "I have to clear."

The governor's best line was a single word, "Liar!" right before he beheaded Herchel. Rick had just given him a fully rational and peaceful solution to their conflict by inviting him to live in the prison and merge their groups. Governor knew that was the right choice to make. Yet, he chose to do something completely irrational, solely based on ego and grudge, unable to fully process how the paradigm had shifted from conflict to peace. Funny enough, this is exactly how pretty much every war happens. There's always at least one side who responds to logical solutions with "Liar!"
@PickyPaige

There is reakky no proof that Rick trully meant what he said at that face off, cause remember few episodes ago, he had single handedly kicked Carol out of the prison even though that wasn't his decision to make. I just can't see how, he can justify keeping the Governor alive in the prison but not let Carol come back! That's why the Governor said Liar! Because Rick was lying, and even if he himself, wouldn't kill The Governor, Michonne and Daryl definitely would have!

That's not how pretty much every war happens. The strong take, and the weak endure. Most times in history, war is decided because one side weighs their power against those who live in places they want, and they move because they're concerned about spreading their people, not taking into account the other people because they don't care about them beyond how much resistance they can put up.

Firing Frank Darabont was the shows BIGGEST mistake he planned for so much more which is why Season 1 was so so so amazing and it slowly then quickly falls apart. He was gonna give the backstory to the purple walker, the soldier in the tank, and how Atlanta fell. Fear TWD did justice in showing the fall of the military in the beginning but Atlantas story was a last stand for refuge and they ruined it by being greedy cutting the budget in half and firing darabont who took Dale with him who was a great character. How do you cut the budget in half of the biggest season 1 series premier ever? Greed. That’s all it was greed.

To put more context to this, Frank Darabont directed the Shawshank Redemption, and AMC fired him to save money, hiring a guy that had previously only ever made forgettable drama shows. If you're wondering why Dale, Andrea, and alot of other people died so early compared to comic counterparts, its because the actors were his friends who he'd asked to join him on the project, so when he was kicked out, they wanted out, and who can blame them? The SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION! And they fired him because they didn't wanna spend more money! Only people you have to blame for the direction the show went are AMC themselves. They made alot of decisions like that, over the show's lifetime.

Varys: "May I leave you with a bit of a riddle, Lord Tyrion?" He did not wait for an answer. “In a room sit three great men, a king, a priest, and a rich man with his gold. Between them stands a sellsword, a little man of common birth and no great mind. Each of the great ones bids him slay the other two. ‘Do it,’ says the king, ‘for I am your lawful ruler.’ ‘Do it,’ says the priest, ‘for I command you in the name of the gods.’ ‘Do it,’ says the rich man, ‘and all this gold shall be yours.’ So tell me - who lives and who dies?” … Tyrion Lannister: "The king, the priest, the rich man - who lives and who dies? Who will the swordsman obey? It's a riddle without an answer, or rather, too many answers. All depends on the man with the sword.” Varys: "And yet he is no one," Varys said. "He has neither crown nor gold nor favor of the gods, only a piece of pointed steel." Tyrion Lannister: "That piece of steel is the power of life and death." Varys: "Just so … yet if it is the swordsmen who rule us in truth, why do we pretend our kings hold the power? Why should a strong man with a sword ever obey a child king like Joffrey, or a wine-sodden oaf like his father?" Tyrion Lannister: "Because these child kings and drunken oafs can call other strong men, with other swords." Varys: "Then these other swordsmen have the true power. Or do they? Whence came their swords? Why do they obey?" Varys smiled. "Some say knowledge is power. Some tell us that all power comes from the gods. Others say it derives from law. Yet that day on the steps of Baelor's Sept, our godly High Septon and the lawful Queen Regent and your ever so knowledgeable servant were as powerless as any cobbler or cooper in the crowd. Who truly killed Eddard Stark do you think? Joffrey, who gave the command? Ser Ilyn Payne, who swung the sword? Or ... another?" Tyrion Lannister: Tyrion cocked his head sideways. “Did you mean to answer your damned riddle, or only to make my head ache worse?" Varys: "Here, then. Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.” Tyrion: “So power is a mummer’s trick?” Varys: “A shadow on the wall,” Varys murmured, “yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.” -George R.R. Martin, ‘A Clash of Kings’ (Book two of ‘A Song of Ice & Fire’), Chapters Tyrion I & Tyrion II

21:56 I find it very imporant to state that yes, unlike others, Rick got back on his feet, but it is very important to note that Rick didn't do it alone: Hershel played a crucial role on Rick's recovery. Hershel represented one of the most fundamental aspects of what it means to be human, not only in terms of survival but also showing the importance of looking up to God, which means looking up to higher standards, the burden of responsability and the burden of sticking up to principles and values that keep you from losing what makes you human.

I don't see Deanna as a bad leader she simply was ill equipped and not only that she willingly stepped aside when a better option came along - perhaps the best trait a leader can have. In fact Rick had clearly gone too far down the dark road of brutality and paranoia. If instead of meeting Alexandria and Deanna he met the saviors it might have pushed him into becoming the next big bad group to protect himself and those he cares about from the vicious world outside, remember Rick was willing to torture and kill Aaron for no good reason other than he knew where they were. I sincerely believe Alexandria and Deanna's leadership saved Rick every bit as much as he saved them.

Sometimes I wish the show had more time to dive into the characters emotions, but those episodes are almost universally chastised by the adrenaline junky side of the fanbase. Some of shows best moments for me aren't the high stakes action, but instead the characters reflecting on the events. Good examples of quotes that induce chills are Hershel's quotes in season 2 regarding losing his faith in religion after seeing the world outside the farm, Morgan's conversation with rick in season 3 "Clear", Ricks speech to the governor regarding coming back from the worst kinds of actions, Michonne's conversation at the gates of alexandria about how if you never give up the fight that got you there it turns on you and ends up hurting you, Eastmans speech about PTSD and continuing moving forward thru new doors. And Im sure dozens more, these are what the show is about when watching an episode live or on a premiere you miss some of these subtle emotional moments/quotes, but re-examining the series in a binge style format you catch the shifts in characters much clearer and it makes it more intimate

HARD agree!! For example, I absolutely love the bottle episodes but most of the fandom hates on them because they’re “boring” :// & I always wish the show could go back to more deeper relationships like there are characters who have known each other for 5+ seasons but only have 2 interactions in the whole show, like Glenn + Carl, Carol + so many characters until season 10/11. Like, after a decade she is finally properly interacting with people like Aaron, Eugene, Rosita, Gabriel etc.. I also with they would show how the trauma that the characters have endured affected them

@@apinchofdisappointment the production cost for the main show (sets, zombies, special effects, etc) must be too high. During the down time they should focus on pre apocalypse life of characters, what happened what shaped them pre apocalypse, what their relationships with their families were, what hardships they faced. And the cost for that could be relatively cheap considering it would be modern unaltered everyday life, no special effects or zombies makeup, etc

You totally do catch the both the shifts in character and their essence. One if my favourites at the start was Amy. She had an excellent attitude - gathering firewood, picking mushrooms, fishing and generally being pleasant. It would have been interesting watch her become cynical or disinterested perhaps, but she died early. The others? Profound changes. I never liked that Latino idiot from season 1, who lost his family, so it wasn't a surprise his poor attitude escalated, but so many were remarkable. I loved the Eastman episode, plus the one with Beth and Daryl, even if I hated the ending. Seriously, how could he open the door like that? And they're just standing there? Cockblock of the century.

48:16 I finally started watching TWD after seeing a few videos breaking down the incredible writing and development of the character of Rick Grimes (which is, of course, extraordinary..!) but the evolution of Carol was what truly blew me away as I watched her evolve in a genuine and awesome way. (When I got to the Terminus plot and Carol started gearing up to go in, I thought to myself “she went from a battered woman who was too traumatized to act when her daughter went missing into a human grenade that could be thrown into any situation, with strength and without fear, to destroy everyone in her way to save her people”, but also that they did it right - she didn’t turn into a different and strong woman the moment her abuser was dead and the abuse removed, it took time for her to find her footing, which is realistic. They didn’t rush it for the sake of plot, and I genuinely appreciated their patience in her development.)

Trauma can detach us from reality, but whether we get to rebuild is based entirely on whether or not we want to handle our own problems. While some have a never say die attitude, most have a point where effort just seems futile and they give in, sometimes that means letting yourself stay in the detached reality your mind creates to protect yourself, and for others it means putting a bullet in your brain. Suicide is such an epidemic because of how society treats people with stress, anxiety, and depression.

Such a great video. I wrote an essay a long time ago about what it's like coming back from war. The short version: its like watching the first five seasons of the walking dead. The entire Alexandria storyline reminded me of coming home. PTSD isn't a mental illness, it's just the knowledge that our safe, comfy lives have been a fickle delusion all along. We are not safe. Not one of us. War is just like normal life... until its not. There is no predicting when it will come crashing down. Only that it inevitably will. Try to explain this to my fellow Americans they start trying to convince me it's in my head, I'm perfectly safe. No. I'm not. Neither are you. And I ain't guessing. That scene with Sacha at the party really did my head in, because I've had that experience. Blowing up at someone for trying to have a pleasant conversation with me, when my head is screaming at me that this person is completely unprepared to deal with the slightest hardship, and they desperately need to toughen the fuck up... it's the lonliest, most hopeless feeling on earth.

In most contexts (depending on the size of the power structure and setup of the leadership), it's typically less about making the best possible decision and more about making a decision but having the foresight to analyze it from the beginning. The problem with most forms of leadership that we see today is that we unexpectedly gave ourselves this insanely rapid growth in communication and accessibility of information without strengthening/codifying our common values and morality. If you have 8 basic groups of people in a nation the size of the US but all 8 have wildly different perspectives and values, you'll never find a way to have a singular effective leadership. We basically made social cohesion obsolete by making regional cultures obsolete

They snap back and forth between being OK and able to function and live semi normal and something happening and having someone going insane. I think it is pretty obvious that it takes even more complex and deeper thoughts to create such things than random spectators could ever have. And before you change your words again you literally said ''I always wondered if we place too much meaning into artistic works'' and ''Did that author mean that or has it simply become our taught and or shared view of the 'deeper meaning'''. The answer is obviously YES the artist meant for you to see and feel exactly what you see and feel from the work, and you literally only see and feel it because that was the goal from the start. I’ve watched this show since it came out when I was 9 and I’ve always been a fan. I love watching the characters and it’s why I love the show. I love the zombies sure. But it feels personal, the relationships and the conflicts and I often relate to them. I joke with my boyfriend all the time I would be a fantastic survivor because I’m a natural leader. But I couldn’t let people die and that would be my downfall. I would feel compelled to help anyone who yelled help. It’s the same reason I’m so scared of the human trafficking rings because I know if I saw a kid struggling or anything I would not be able to not help. Maybe it’d get to that point given a zombie apocalypse, but if I were thrown into one right now I would die. I’m also pretty adaptable I’d say, with work, school, and life. But, true to my age. I’m very naive and, given the chance, I’d make a great leader… but I can be real lol I’d die pretty early on. This was a really great essay and I loved listening to it while I do homework. I love anything walking dead and would love to hear you talk about more lol. Thank you for making it! It was wonderful.

Idr when I stopped watching .. Machone (ya, I know) was headed down to a boat. But that's part of why star fleet had the kobi ashi maro (I know) test. That's a true test of leadership...just like that conversation in saving private ryan...."you could say that ordering that man to do that, saved...10 other lives....."

Yep & I swear every time I hear someone or get into a conversation about the TWD especially with the new show starting in a month I will remember this piece of academia and share/forward this to them. Even if I am extremely pissed off with TWD again. (See first comment 😊)

Thank you so much for sharing this video! THIS is why I am in love with the walking dead experience. I have tried to explain the relevance of this series to people and the fact that it's not really about zombies but I am not able. You have given TWD the insight that it needs for other people to understand how it is, in so many ways, a metaphor... again I may not be able to explain this correctly, but it's just so much more than a story about the undead. PLEASE continue to make videos. At least make one when the original series ends! I would be FASCINATED to see your take on this incredible story!

The people who think TWD is just another zombie show are the same people who would stand there in the middle of an apocalyptic event asking what do I do now. The series is not about killing zombies, it's about overcoming loss, and accepting the reality you now face, and learning to cooperate as a group, increasing the chances of everyone surviving in desperate circumstances.

The effectiveness of having zombies for a apocalypse is that they never really go away, so the threat is always there

I'm majoring in mechanical engineering, and I tend to think of sanity as a bar of metal that's been strained and stressed and then let go; if you don't stress the bar too much, it'll retain it's shape, but if it is stressed enough, it will deform permanently so that its shape is forever altered even after you remove the applied load. the resulting shape may be similar, but it won't be the same, and if you know where to look you can see the difference. I think most of the characters are like the latter example, even the ones who seem normal aren't really the same people anymore.

To add onto the sanity segment. Trauma is not solely about the things stated, especially, how the mind responds to trauma -- but also the associations that the mind learns to connect with trauma. For instance. If a person goes through a traumatic situation, and immediately receives support and care from loving friends/family, this person will associate trauma with love and support, and they will learn deep down that everything will be OK. On the other hand, another person goes through a traumatic experience and has no one to fall back on, or the traumatic situation continues without end. This person associates trauma with more trauma, and they learn deep down the idea that they cannot change their circumstances or make them better. Learned helplessness. This is deeply damaging to the human psyche. This goes to show that the circumstances surrounding the trauma go a long way towards our personality formation. On the other hand, if somebody goes through a traumatic situation and receives no help from anyone else, they may learn that the only one they can depend on is themselves, and come out with both negative and positive tendencies. As the man said, what doesn't break you makes you stronger, and sometimes what breaks you makes you stronger, too.

The part in season 5 before Aaron finds them, where the whole group thus far, Eugene and Abraham and Rosita being the newest, is holding the barn doors together as the walkers and the storm are pushing against them. It was a beautiful shot, poetic and powerful

POWER- reminded me of season 11 episode 12 when Lance was sitting on the porch with Maggie and tried to alter her state of consciousness with his "lucky charm" and ideas of what a world could be (same way hypnosis is used) to try to gain power over Maggie. She didn't fall for it. She stayed in her proper conscious state. Told Lance no thanks!

Great video. I’ve been watching the show for years since it started. Learned a lot about myself through these characters and have grown into the person I am now. We all suffer trauma in todays world. Some of it is small and surmountable. Some of it breaks us down. The trick is looking deep inside and figuring out if you’re gonna let it change you, or if you are willing to change yourself to keep moving forward. We all get to come back, but not all of us know if we can.
