Remember, Water's lost his father in the War, leaving his mother as the lone parent. It isn't about a mother who doesn't love her son, it's a mother who loves her son SO much that she smothers him, desperate not to lose him too, having lost her husband. It is destructive and selfish, but doesn't come from a lack of love

You are correct that Roger meant that phrase as essentially, "we don't need YOUR education", but Gilmour in an interview years later said that they had taken so much grief for suggesting that education wasn't needed that he felt it necessary to point out that the phrase was a double negative. He said it with a wink. Suffice to say, they knew what they were doing. They always planted banana skins for the witless to slip upon. At any rate, the real meaning of the song is that Roger once had a mean teacher and probably got his backside spanked. He does love to carry a grudge. Interesting factoid about the song Mother. It doesn't quite sound like Pink Floyd, the reason being that neither Rick Wright nor Nick Mason play on it. And Roger doesn't play bass either on the studio version. Roger fired Rick during the recording of the album, so he doesn't appear on all of the tracks. And Nick had difficulty with the time signature, so they used session master Jeff Porcaro. Your interpretation of the song is spot on. it's funny to me that every mother's day you see reactors using 'Mother' as their tribute to mom. But they don't pay attention to the lyrics. Because the reality is that the relationship between Mother and Pink are at the root of his issues with women for the remainder of the album. Sweet sounding song with dark, dark lyrics. It's one of my favorite songs on the album.

Both Time and Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 feels like when both of the albums open up and kick into full gear for me. It's like the album suddenly opens up and hits you with the full force of the soundstage soundscape that Pink Floyd created. Their build up is so good.

Funny note: in the movie they change the one line "Mother, will they put me in the firing line?" to "Mother am I really dying?" as they depict Pink (the main character) getting a disease from taking care of a rat he found wounded and then is scolded and probably told something of this doomsayer, exaggerated and overprotective kind to him by his mom. The same moment is then visually reprised in Confortably Numb, (which you already listened to) as he talks about the feeling (my hands felt like two balloons)

I grew up with these albums. Dylan. Floyd. Metallica in my early teens. It was all about the Music. Nice to see you look at lyrics I didn’t really care about at 14-16. was just the Music. I bought all those Classic Metallica albums when they were released and still have those first pressings. As for Dylan. He was old in the 80s but I got a load of albums from a relative and his album John wesley harding with his iconic song all along the watchtower blew me away. The wall was one of my first cds back in 88. Loved it. Saw the movie in theatre in 88 as well.

The technical term you seek is "phrasing", meaning to let the instrument "talk", not like a waterfall (like shred-guitarists ;-)), but as in a conversation. Leaving space between the notes. Yeah, the similarity with hiphop's "flow" is true. When i covered some of the early songs of Eminem I realized that it is not just fast spoken words, but in a definitive rhythm.

Pink Floyd recorded their first album at Abbey Road Studios while The Beatles were recording ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ in the next studio. Roger Waters was disappointed when he met John Lennon, remembering him as rude and condescending. But he was obviously still a huge influence on him. The heavy bass “Wall” theme, which you can even hear the beginnings of on ‘Animals’, comes from two John Lennon songs: “Working Class Hero” from ‘Plastic Ono Band’ and especially the second half of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” from The Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’ album. in musical terms, the way we place notes together is called phrasing. Think of it as how you would give a compelling soliloquy. Making a point, pause, a short statement and supporting arguments....its just like conversing through an instrument, if you choose to see it that way.

I was born in the 50s so not so far away from Waters when i went to school the teacher could and id punish us by bending over a desk and using a plimsoll or tennis shoe an waking shit on our backsides and of course the head could cane you.One day my geography teacher caught some kids throwing water bombs about in the toilet i just happened tp be in there doing my business he dragged us all in the classroom and slippered us all despite my trying to tell him i was not involved after when all the other kids told him i was not involved without pause he replied well if he wasnt guilty for this he is probably guilty for for something else and i can tell you for sure lots of the teachers would take the piss out of the kids we had a games teacher he would draw teams up for rugby he would pick all the boys he liked who where the school tuffs on to his team and of course all the nerds an little kids on the other team an i kid you not he would make a try an if we managed to stop him he would say it was a foul an have a free kick i could go on an on i will finish with how it affected me i got caught doing something wrong an got the slipper after the teacher said now that taught you something didnt it i said yes it did it taught me not to get caught again but lest you think my school days where all bad well i was into art an music i was band captain in the school band and lead trumpet player i also had lots of my artwork display but my teachers did not know what to do with me i was the proverbial rebel on my report card it would always say Donald is a very bright boy and capable of doing well he just wont pay attention

And just for fun the fictional character in this album is Mr Floyd.... "Pink" (in the phone call home from the US you can hear the operator say, its a collect call from Mr Floyd to Mrs Floyd) This idea of Mr Floyd pops up in the track "Have a Cigar" on the album "Wish You Were Here" which in turn references people who knew nothing about the band foolishly thinking Pink Floyd was a solo artist!

Here we go! Pink's wall is getting built by the loss of his father during WW2 (in this case Italy and Anzio beachhead), an over-protective mother that won't let him fly but might let him sing, and abusive authority figures that pour their derision upon everything he does. One of the best lines: "Mother, did it need to be so high?" Once again, a thoughtful and insightful reaction!

I don't think this is an album about someone who becomes unbalanced so much as it is about alienation and dehumanization. The character Pink certainly _does_ suffer a profound emotional breakdown, but it's not an isolated situation of "chemical imbalance" or any such thing. Pink's retreat behind The Wall is a response to social forces that dehumanize. The Wall expands on the theme of Welcome to the Machine. The work world (especially the music industry) is a Machine that crushes and deindividuates people, and insists that they do the same to others. War treats people as disposable commodities (The Anzio bridgehead was held for the price of a few hundred ordinary lives). School is a factory (as is made abundantly plain in the movie) designed to turn individual students into an undifferentiated stream of ground meat. It's not just about individual bad actors, or teachers that happened to be mean. The Wall is about how mechanistic social systems like school and industry _make_ people calloused and cruel. This insight is critically important in understanding the lyrics on side 4 where the 'surrogate band' acts out the inhuman monstrosity of carrying the demands of society to their logical conclusion. The Wall is about the systemic, structural causes of alienation and, ultimately, evil.

I really hope you take the time to watch the movie someday. Epic.

The Wall is a way of protecting oneself against a hostile world that not only bullies, but demands that you become callous to others. But by separating oneself from others for protection, the connections that lead to empathy are also severed. The Wall is a trauma response. It serves a purpose. But Mother, did it need to be so high?

If you get time, PLEASE check out the last proper Pink Floyd album, which was The Final Cut. It's very much a head on dealing with the war. I believe It's even dedicated to Eric Fletcher Waters, Roger's father. If I remember right, even though he was against war, he saw the nazis for what they were and joined up to fight against them. The Gunner's Dream is gut wrenchingly beautiful.

David Gilmour is a master of phrasing (the way he plays the guitar) He doesn’t fill space up, but instead lets it breathe.

The song Mother I think rings true for most people. "Mother's gonna put all her fears into you" .. our parents tell us not to do this or that and the consequences if we do .. your parents fears become yours... I don't see this as a dark song because most of our mothers/parents are our protectors and really act this way on one level or another.

Mother is Pink Floyd's magnus opus. To me at least, today. You should listen to 1980 live version which has an extended solo and great harmonies.

If you have a chance, listen to both parts of When the Tigers Broke Free. It's a song Waters wrote specifically about his father's death. It's in the Wall movie, just not the album for some reason, and it's an amazing song.

Growing up in rural Pennsylvania and going to elementary school in the mid 70's to 80s, it was common, actually, customary for teachers to have their paddles decorated, and hung proudly at the front of the classroom. The display was for any child daring to step out of line. A few did every year, if you were in that room, you witnessed the whole thing, (usually 30-35 students/room)

Like I said previously, the "Happiest Days of Our Lives" and "Another Brick in the Wall (pt 2)" are almost always played together to the point that I forgot they were actually separate tracks. Glad you got to hear them together.

I've watched 2000 reactions to Mother and I'm still waiting for some musician to talk about the complete mess with time signature of this song, a mess that fits perfectly with the message in the lyrics. This is not a 4/4, even me can notice the change in the chorus to an "almost waltz" time signature (you can count the 1-2-3-1-2-3 pulse), but there are many more: 12/8, 9/8, 4/4, 8/8... Pink Floyd were GENIOUS!

When he says his father crossed the ocean leaving only a memory. He is being literal. For Roger and for Pink, his father was killed by a bomb in Aprilla, north of Anzio leaving nothing behind for the family except a picture and a memory. Roger never saw his father. The Floyd has to be listened to loud to be able to catch all the sound especially the faint background sounds. In "The Happiest Days Of Our Lives" after the line "hurt the children anyway they could." there is an audible "oof!" by Roger in one channel. If you don't hear it turn up the volume until you do and that's how it should be played. Yes, Oink is an unreliable narrator. I think it is important that this story has been filtered to us from the memory of a disturbed individual. We are observing a character who is looking to justify closing himself off from society. His twisted perceptions will become more noticeable as the album advances and "Mother" is a good example.

As bad as the schools were in the 40s thru the 60s, it is undeniable that they must have had superb music education.

Hi father was killed in WW2, and his father’s father was killed in WW1. War took 2 generations.

Waters' father has an interesting story. In 1939 he was a Christian pacifist, and sat out the early war as a conscientious objector. But then he became active in Labour politics and became ever more radical, finally joining the British Communist Party. He dropped his conscientious objector status to fight the fascists in the British Army. He was killed in Italy in 1944, and his remains were never found.

Does it make sense when he asks if he should run for president? I would think it wouldn't make sense as a Brit. Never did understand that one

I’m no expert on Floyd, although they’re one of my top bands but I think it was after The Wall that Floyd broke up because Waters was exerting too much creative control and was an oppressive presence. Gilmore felt stifled. If I’m wrong I’m sure someone will correct me who knows much more

The double negative is for a purpose. It's a demarcation of that "lack" the song is so much talking about. Kind of reminds me of the Mexicans in Blazing Saddles saying "We don't need no stinking badges." So the double negative is a sign of that lack, as in even though the kids are in school, they don't give a damn about education because the abuse they're recieving. They may even know the proper expression (We don't need eduction), but are rebelling via the incorrect expression.
