This is my favorite episode of season 7 of the Walton’s. It is sad yet heartwarming at the same time. Next to John-Boy, Zebulon was my favorite character in this beloved television series. Enjoy!

Elen Corby was such a great actress that when she suffered a real stroke, they wrote it into the show. I loved her homecoming episode when the tries to make life easier for her and she manages to get out the heart wrenching words, " you don't need me." That was an extremely touching moment.

one of the most most astonishing decisions, I have seen in a television series, was the decision to honor the actress and the character, by bringing Corby back and allowing this stroke and rehabilitation to remain a storyline. It is virtually unprecedented to show infirmity and disability as a normal part of family life. And it was an expensive decision. They kept her on contract and shot her scenes over and over and over again, as often as needed to get those words audible and give her the time to do it right despite the frustration and increased cost to keep the cameras rolling and pay those wages of everyone on set. Well worth every dime, but not many producers would have signed on to this, when writing her out was the obvious and easiest answer.

@@colductsbubba4673 On the other hand, Judy Norton Tayler noted that Ellen provided incredible inspiration to the younger actors. I paraphrase here. She could communicate more in character, more poignantly in a scene with only a couple of words, or even no words with her eyes, her face, and the way she held that stiffened body, than most of them could with paragraphs of dialogue. Ellen did not need any scripted words to act.

All the positive comments are appreciated! - I posted this in January 2018 and in early May for my birthday I went with my father to see my Grandparents in illinois. My Grandpa was starting to not feel good at that point so I didn’t get to see him more then once. He slept most of the time. By June 19th we knew he was going to die it was just a matter of when. Early morning of June 24th my father called me and said he was on his way from Ohio to Illinois but he did not make it on time. That afternoon I got a call from him saying my Grandpa had died. He didn’t get to say goodbye to his dad and that, on top of my Grandpa’s passing, had me inconsolable. 💔 Everytime I watch Ester talks at the end of this scene I ball my eyed out. My Grandpa loved to sing Bluegrass and play guitar. We have hundreds of recordings of him singing. That is his legacy to us and how he will continue to live on in our family. Through his amazing voice.

They didn't a chance to say good bye to him in real life, so they decided to do it on the show.

David Showmaker Unfortunately no. Richard Thomas was off the show by this time. John Boy was in New York City. Sad though! Would have been great having his appearance for this scene.

Richard Thomas was distancing himself from the show at this point. He did a few guest appearances in season six, a year after he he left. But that was it. He didn’t appear again until the 1993 reunion. He later said he was worried he’d be typecast as John Boy, but that happened anyway, so he wished he had stayed for the entire run. Michael Learned also said later that she should have stayed for the whole run.

All babies like playing in the dirt. I thought that remark of Mary Ellen was silly. She can't tell at that age what her son will be into when he is a man. I saw this show when new, and I was a teen.

Richard Thomas and Eric Scott could act but the rest of the Walton children were terrible actors ..

He didn't leave the show. He wasn't there for seveal episodes but he never left the show. Besides these were real life stories, so where was John Boy; was the REAL John Boy at his grandfathers graveside?
