The Waltons - Earl Hamner's 100th birthday was celebrated with a tribute in Nelson County, VA. Kami represented the Walton cast with a video from "the kids" as we shared our memories of Earl.
Questions about the connection between Spencer's Mountain starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara and The Homecoming with Patricia Neal and The Waltons series. How much of these stories and episodes were based on real facts?
How did a shooting day break down to allow for rehearsal, filming and school for the children within our 6 ½ day per episode schedule?
I also answer how this Behind the Scenes KZfaq Channel was inspired.

In theatre speak, that's called "suspension of reality." Meaning, the actors are so realistic, viewers believe what they're seeing is real, even though, of course, they know it's not.

I agree. I watch on a continuous basis. Every day, all day, from the beginning. I am a weirdo and never watch it out of sequence. My all time absolute favorite tv show. I'm enjoying these videos and wondered if you would consider a walk down memory lane kind of thing where you discuss each episode, one by one, sometimes a special guest star. I'd love to see this kind of podcast with both you and Richard. No matter what information you bring for us, it's always a joy to watch you.

As much as I had a crush on Mary Ellen and really loved the Jason character (esp leading up to WWII) I think Earl's narration at the beginning of each episode was my favorite part of the show. There was always something comforting about his voice. Even more so now, with all the strife in the world now, it's good to know you can flip on Hallmark for a Waltons episode, hear Earl's voice and just know, there's something better.

Thank you, Judy for taking time to spend time with fans of The Walton's. Many actors who are associated with a character have a love/hate relationship with the show. I certainly understand how and why that happens. We are happy you have embraced your time with The Walton's while pursuing other acting and musical opportunities. But like a theme in the show, Walton's Mountain keeps pulling you home. I enjoy both segments equally and look forward to Monday and Thursdays wondering what Judy has to share.

I've read both "The Homecoming" and "Spencer's Mountain". Both are about a family named Spencer who lived in Virginia in the 1930's. The books are similar for the most part, but they differ in various details. In both books. Clay Spencer was the father, and he worked at a soapstone quarry in the fictional community of New Dominion, which was based on Earl Hamner's hometown of Schuyler, Virginia. In "The Homecoming", there were eight children, as there were in Hamner's real-life family. In "Spencer's Mountain", there were nine children. The youngest was a baby boy named Donnie. Later in the book, Olivia gave birth to twins named Franklin and Eleanor, and that brought the total to eleven. Both books featured two spinster sisters who made a concoction called "the recipe", but they were much less sophisticated than the Baldwin ladies. They usually wore overalls when they made their brew. One big difference between the books and the TV series was that the series (as far as I can remember) never featured Olivia's parents. In the books, they lived in the same community as the family, and their last name was Italiano. Since Olivia's father was of Italian ancestry, that would have made for some interesting story lines, especially during the war years!

Thanks for this info, citizenken. The twins’ names certainly points to how grateful the majority of citizens were for FDR’s inventive programs, saving countless lives through The Depression and beyond. The fictional choice may say something, too, about Earl Hamner’s feelings of tribute. It’s a lovely tribute from you for Mr. Hamner that you shared some about his books here and in honor of his 100th year.

@@peaceshepherding529 According to the book, Clay Spencer would not accept the WPA food that the government was handing out. That was true of many rural people during the Depression, including my own grandfather.

@@citizenken7069 Yes. Yet the programs, you may know, extended far beyond food, including widespread work (from repairing and building infrastructure to artists being employed to document life and beautify federal structures), to training and more. As was shown in The Waltons series, with a majority of the U.S. population then living in rural areas most people grew much or all of their own food, and many urban dwellers frequently had backyard or communal city plots, so many people fortunately had some access to food. (In The Waltons’ example, that family had enough food they grew in many cases they could have others stay with &/or eat with them.) But the lack of jobs, shelter (supports & securities for shelter), education, health care…. these would continue to collapse & destroy lives without federal protections and innovations. (You can tell, in my view this country has heavily been sold the idea that business is the “be all, end all” of what makes this country. But I think business’ limits are clear and there have to be unifying efforts to address many areas of life for life to be sustained and to improve - areas that business doesn’t address. Plus, business, like people’s circumstances, ebbs and flows too, and sometimes fails due to unforeseen hardships. Like your Grandfather, I believe most people still try to do everything possible to build and rebuild all they can through their own capacities. To me this is why supports beyond commerce work, because the prevailing spirit of people is to be ethical, not only endure but grow and to be part of a community - community giving and receiving. I’m thankful for your giving and receiving in this community too. If only Earl Hamner, Jr., knew how what inspired him and the ripples he created kept extending to hearten others.

@@peaceshepherding529 Today we've gone to the opposite extreme, and people look to the government to solve all their problems. People in the Great Depression wanted work, not a handout. Most people I knew who lived through who lived through the Depression tried to avoid going into debt. People today want the government to pay their debts. I think that's a much more dangerous mentality. Government money always comes with strings attached. Besides, what happens when the government runs out of money?

My sense is that Earl thoroughly loved writing, and would use as much poetic license in creating a good yarn as in using factual material from his family life. I think about the few Twilight Zone episodes he did which were clearly fictional. Of course he didn't let on, but growing up in a large family provided a lot of material on which to draw.

Great questions today and fascinating answers! Boy! You all had to be "quick on your feet" to film with very little if any rehearsal! Impressive indeed! What a wonderful tribute and memorial statue of Mr Hamner! He certainly put Schuyler, VA on the map! I think it was a real lucky stroke to had to have changed the characters' names! I read Spencer's Mountain after becoming a Walton's fan, so perhaps I was biased about the names. Clay Boy ~ while certainly apropos for the era and setting, just didnt have the same warmth and universality of JohnBoy. With the exception of possibly Patty Cake, for me ~ that holds true for all the names ~ Zebulon and Esther in particular! But, Kami is such a darling already, pointing out her cuteness with a sweetie name is unnecessary and even undercuts a bit. Whereas this tiny child with the most dignified and classic name ~™ Elizabeth works just right somehow! Especially, it gives the brothers and sisters the chance to then address her with pet names ~ honey, sweetie, etc. You've added so much to the lives of us Walton's fans with your videos, Judy. I already was an extremely devoted fan ~ as most people here! But, having the chance to ask you and the cast questions and converse with you continues to be a real treat! I would love the chance to visit Schuyler one more time and drive along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Time does not dim the charm of The Walton's nor Earl's beloved mountains! Bless you, Judy, and Walton's everywhere! Thank you for everything! ❤

The movie "Spencers Mountain" was made in 1963, based on the 1961 book, written by Earl Hamner, Jr. You said it was made in the 40's, Judy, during your review of the movie during the first part of this episode. I first watched it on TV years ago, because in 1963 I was only 6 years old and it was probably a little too mature in theme for me to understand. But by the time it made it to the small screen that was no longer the case! I enjoyed it very much, and have continued enjoying it anytime it's on. I also made the connection from the movie to The Waltons not long after the TV show came on. I also enjoy your show very much, even during the strike, when we got to share aspects of your life and some of the other folks from the show, like Michael! Love all of it! I have wanted to know the answer to the question you asked Judy about what she mightve asked Earl Hamner because each time we watch an episode they are all SO exceptional. Were the characters and their storylines fictionalized or genuine? Very good question. Thank you for asking it.

Thank you so much for what you offer on KZfaq for all your loyal fans! I grew up watchng the Waltons and I am about Erin's (Mary's) age today. My children were also raised on the Walton's due to my love of the series. My question to you is: I have seen lots of episodes of other tv shows where they show some of the bloopers. Is it possible to see some of those here or have someone as a guest that has access to them? It just allows some of your fans to see the cast as real people. I think it could make for a fun segment on your show! Thank you for all you do!
@judynorton2598

We didn’t have those sorts of bloopers when we were filming. We had mistakes in scenes and intentional pranks. But it was all on film and we only saw an edit of these for fun at our show’s Christmas party. No one ever had copies of it.

I remember seeing Spencer’s Mountain at the movie theater and thinking Patty Cake was a funny name, but then most of us have ancestors with cutesy nicknames. People think they are cute when a child is 3-4, not so as they get older.

Dear Ms Norton, Thank you for talking about "Spencer's Mountain." Fun Fact: Donald Crisp, who played Grandpa in "Spencer's Mountain," also played the father, Gwilym Morgan, in "How Green Was My Valley," along with young Roddy MacDowell and again, Maureen O'Hara, who played Angharad. Some may disagree with me: I feel strongly that the late, great Patricia Neal really embodied a Depression Era mother in "The Homecoming:" my own mother grew up in those years and at times was extremely strict - it's how they got through! Ms Learned could be strict at times as Olivia in the series; however, the emphasis was on the more supportive, loving family dynamic. I think of it as two sides to the story, and both are wonderful. I especially appreciate how "The Waltons" tackled many issues prevalent in society at that time, and which are still timely in 2023! I hope you are still singing and enjoying music: you have a rare gift, and are talented in so many areas. Wishing you a joyous, healthy and safe new year, Jim K. Pittsburgh, PA

My wife, who grew up in Russia, has long been in love with the Waltons, and we now share the show with our four year old daughter, who also insists on watching each episode from start to finish. I think it would be a stretch to say that the large and varied set of characters, and rural setting, and range of emotions, somehow resonates with someone who grew up on Russian literature (and films), but the appeal of the show for her is genuine.

I was watching you talk about continuity in episodes and reunion movies and I also thought about the the 40th anniversary of the moon landing and john and olivias wedding that would have meant they wed in 1929 but the show started in the year 1933.I pegged Mary Ellen as being born in about 1919. Currently I am watching the last episodes of Will Geer on the show to see if I can see health declining. I had read his daughter said that he had been very sick before he died. I was also watching an episode recently with Olivia and actress Louise Latham. When Olivia visits, quite a chuckle that in the very viewable background was the "Bewitched" house. I saw recently on TV showing the house being demolished.Sad.Love your channel Judy.Happy New Year.

Every time I hear The Walton's theme music, it brings back my own childhood memories and warms my heart. I at one time commented on John Wamsley's site asking him if he knew of any lyrics to the theme music. And if not, could he draw on his connection to and memories of what the show portrayed and write lyrics himself. There are probably some legal issues involved, but I do believe he is quite capable of taking on such a wonderful tribute to a special piece of Americana. ❤

Judy, you are a lady that knows how to rock a scarf. My mom was a scarf wearer and your classy style just reminds me of her… thank you. 😊 A curiosity that I have about actors, especially actors that were successful with rich characters and storylines. Are you able to watch an old episode and see your actor friends as the character they’re playing and actually get caught up in the story? Or is that part of the “magic” lost, since actors are involved in the production? On another note happy New Year and may it be filled with peace & love. 😊

Hi Judy, I'm loving the behind the scenes of the Waltons, with you..I love the Waltons alot..i have the theme song, as a ring tone on my cell phone..i recently watched a 2 or 3 part video of you and Michael Learned...please forgive if I'm wrong..but she seemed alittle rude in away, while yall were cooking..her personality didnt match Olivia at all..I love all of you guys, and the cooking videos kinda showed a side of her, that I've never seen..you was very patient with her, and let her know that you really didnt cook while on the Walton's..I loved it when you done the applesauce cake in your home I believe..wish you would share it again..thanks for taking the questions, and answering them

I love that you have our theme as your ring tone :). None of us are completely like the characters we played. We pull from who we are, what we know and what we believe is the truth of the character. Like all of us, Michael is a mix of what you saw as Olivia and who else she is in real life. I guess I know her well from all our years and that more of that was not with the camera rolling.
