THE WALTONS first aired on commercial television in 1972 and became a hit. The series, based on the life of the Hamner family of Schuyler, Virginia, was written by brother and author Earl Hamner. This special presentation features interviews with the Hamner brothers and sisters, the stars of THE WALTONS at the series' Silver Anniversary celebration, and the residents of Schuyler. The Hamners discuss their strong family ties, tell about growing up in Nelson County, relay how the commercial series was different from real life, and remember what it was like to have their lives and community portrayed on national television. The presentation visits Schuyler, the Hamners' childhood home, and the Walton Museum.

I definitely miss all the small towns of rural locations where the people were real socialable, interactive, helpful,kind-hearted people. Every rural town in our history(personal)is being lost to development(commercial). People & places don't quite appear the same.

This show when it 1st came on saved me. My mother and father had been divorced for about 4 years and I was now 13 when I was watching this every Thursday night. My mom worked all the time and I longed for a family like this. The Waltons was my family every Thursday night. I still enjoy the reruns after all these years. I am 63 now. I've been to the old home place and school in 2005.

My mother if she was alive would be 100 years old and when I was growing up we never missed an episode. I remember after everyone she always said that’s how she grew up. If all her siblings had lived there would have been 17 of them in a 3 room shack and an outhouse in the hills of Tennessee. So I loved the Walton’s. I related to so many episodes

My parents grew up during the depression. I never really understood that time until I watched The Waltons. It is a show that is badly needed in today's world where children are growing up with no morals and values and all they think of is themselves. They expect everything that we worked so hard for to just be handed to them. They need to be taught the lessons that were in every single episode of this show. God bless the Hamner family and Schulyer, Virginia! God bless everyone involved in the show.

@@lucilleduncan3143 Are you sure? Even back in the 1920's and '30's, Hollywood actors lived pretty fast lives compared to average Americans. The profanity and morally-questionable plots (in the movies, and later TV shows) were just a generation or two behind the real thing-taking their cues from the Hollywood actors, producers and writers themselves. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

All the values they exude as in the mother and father Hamner come from the Bible. They exemplified the Golden Rule and taught those values to their children, Earl and his siblings. That is what people have fallen in love with. The other people in the community had the same values which stem from being a follower of Jesus Christ. You can have that to by asking Jesus into your heart today. God bless you. Thank you for this video and the Hamner family, especially Earl, and the town's people of Skyler.

My parents live through the depression in a bug city. My mother said that it was very hard in the cities (& the Dust Bowl region), but things were actually better in the country. She said when you got milk because your cow ate the grass, & veggies because you had some land to grow them, there was less if a strain to feed the family. Also, with cash money hard to come by( though folks lost the house for non-payment if mortgage or taxes on the mountain) the barter economy that was common on the mountain(& in many small communities) made it easier to survive the depression.

My grandma was born in 1927, so she was of the same generation as the Walton (Hamner) children. Hearing Earl Hamner describe his family being impoverished but not deprived made me think of Grandma, who always spoke with fondness about growing up on her grandparents' farm. Like the Hamners, they didn't have much materially, but they had what they needed.

The best sudden side trip I ever made was to Schuyler, VA on my way home to NC from NY a few years ago when I saw the sign that said The Walton's Mountain Museum. I had a lovely few hours at the schoolhouse revisiting the years I spent with the Walton family as I navigated the last years of high school, leaving home for college and work to begin life on my own in CA, and feeling grateful that I now lived in an area of NC that was very close to the dream I'd always had of someday being on Walton's Mountain. This was a lovely explanation of the history of a family and program that captured several generations in many ways and still holds our minds and emotions.

What a wonderful documentary, I was so pleased to see it was about the Hamners themselves & the region they were from..the Waltons truly depicted the time & era pretty accurately, people in these mountains are really like these people, thats what i loved most about this documentary, very good video ❣ the values spoken of in this video are wonderful, even tho we are now told they are bad & judgemental & nontolerant, but that is such a lie, they are a place for a foundation to treat people with more tolerance, with love, kindness, a true meaning of love thy neighbor..its sad to see our values as a nation being attacked & taught they are a bad ideation, we need values, morals, & love to survive...

Watching The Waltons every Thursday night at 7 pm is what kept me at home when I was a child. Every other night I found a reason NOT to be at home! Growing up it took me a long long time to find a man willing to give me 8 children so we could have a Waltons family too but it didn’t turn out that way…we didn’t have a script, we didn’t have producers or directors and we didn’t even have grandparents engaged with us! Watching The Waltons again and now my older children are enjoying the series that depicts a life and society foreign to the attitudes and life of today. So many have so much today yet are miserable, discontented and care little for the needs of others. The Hamner / Walton family depict what it truly means to be rich.

A special series and one I so wished I could have been a part of especially having the love of so many sisters and brothers...I, who had one older brother with whom I have never been close, longed for a large loving family. And imagine having a great set of grandparents to love and learn from right there with you. I was only 11 and 12 years old when I lost all four of my grandparents within 12 months...my Texas grandparents and my Illinois grandparents. How I wish I could have known all of my grandparents better....they were in their 60’s and mid-70’s when I was born. Living close to your family is so much more important than most young people today realize.

The Waltons will never get old! I grew up near Schuyler, Alberene, which is basically at the bottom of this mountain. Earl Hamner endorsed my uncles book. So interesting to have stumbled upon this gold piece.

Oh also my mom lived in Roanoke Virginia and my cousins still live there in the area so I'm familiar with the area of the BlueRidge Mountain area it is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful.

I certainly remember a better time, where we watched the Waltons every Thursday night. We were taught to respect our elders and be nice. Live by the golden rule. The world looked different when I was a kid, in that small country town, in a farmhouse much like theirs, waiting for the show to come on. Waiting for Evel Knievel and the next jump, wide world of sports, Disney movie of the week. I messed up and got old.

I was born in l950 in a small town where most of my relatives lived and still live today. Everyone knew everyone and helped one another. The Walton show was important to me because I could relate is some form to the closeness they have. I have moved quite far away from that little town now and, unfortunately, it has changed a lot during the years. I feel blessed to have grown up there and yet sad for the ones that will never know that small town where everyone knows your first name and the kids don't have fear because everyone watches out for everyone. I will always have my memories of going to the river to catch pollywogs and those days of lazily laying on my grandparent's lawn looking for four leaf clovers as I look up to see the adults sitting around talking.

I had history in Virginia being born in Roanoke and my parents live in Blue Ridge. I only experienced a part of what The Waltons had because my father joined the Navy and we went away from our family and hometown when I was only four. However, so many good memories of my grandmothers and grandfathers, aunts and uncles and cousins when we would come back to visit during holidays or summer when school was out. Unfortunately so many of them are gone now, But their legacy lives on in my heart despite the miles that disconnected us physically.

I don't look at things in the negative, I just commented on the way life was and is now, then, you had a neighbor that wanted to be friends, now, like, where I live, there are so many neighbors in my area, yet, none of them want to be good neighbors, lucky, if they hello. PPL are or seem to be afraid of becoming friends. So sad. I am a friendly person and would love to have neighbors as friends, to have tea with some time or to invite over for a meal, that is not going to happen in my neighborhood. So sad. There is no demise in my life, I love ppl to much to have that happen. I think of what other ppl are missing out on, my friendship and happy go lucky person that can make ppl laugh. Well, there is my answer. There is nothing wrong to remember how life was, like reminiscing.

@@agirlandherglock8816 You are right. The op would have never experienced the lynchings or segregation issues., so she may not care. I agree that there were more health problems. There have been wars in every time period too, so I don't understand why people say that certsin time periods were easier or better.

I highly recommend if you are in the Charlottesville area, visit the Waltons Museum in Schuyler. It was more than just the TV show. It was the history of that tiny town. Also they had photos of graduation classes. Earl was the only boy in a class of 9 or 10 that graduated in 1940. Warning, there is very little cell service in that area. Even our GPS was not able to give accurate directions. Trying to get back to our campground, it took us to the most narrow dirt road and a 1 lane bridge. It was a pretty drive though.

I have lived in the city all my life. I always wanted to be able to walk out side of my house and see beauty of nature. Instead of city traffic and chaos. Murder, carjacking, and muggings are a daily fact of life. I think that is why the Waltons holds such a special place in people's hearts. God bless all of the people involved in the Waltons and thank you. 😊
