The Secret episode of The Waltons reveals that Jim Bob (David Harper) finds out he had a twin who died at birth. Olivia (Michael Learned) was devastated by the loss and has been unable to face it, so its unintentionally become a secret for all these years.
Along the way Elizabeth (Kami Cotler) continues to tease Jim Bob about not really being a Walton and playfully encourages their siblings to join in what she considers "the fun". But, as is the heart of The Waltons, the family comes together and they are all there for Jim Bob and Mama when it matters.

I must agree--this scene between Mama and Jim Bob was so tender, especially with the rest of the family overlooking them. It brought me to tears, too. I only wish that we could have seen the other children's' reactions as they are told the secret. But knowing the rest of the family as we do, we can about guess each character's reaction. it's just nice to see it played out. Judy, what do you suppose Mary Ellen would have said to Mama, Jim Bob or even Daddy about the secret?

This is one of my favorite episodes. I love the emotional scene at the end between JimBob and Olivia. Some of my favorite episodes are those that feature JimBob. He was such an interesting character, and David Harper did a good job of portraying him. Oh, and Judy, you and I have something in common. I remember that episode. I don't know what it was about David Harper's interpretation of Jim bob, but I loved that character. David was a natural in front of the camera. His presence was so genuine and honest. The type of honesty that makes me want to cry, because it is so pure. I loved any episode that featured him and Mary Ellen. You two and grandpa were my favorite characters. There are times when I am stressed, that I just want to throw on my dungarees and mud boots and go fishing with grandpa, at Drucilla's Pond. The Walton's legacy will always be one of fairness and acceptability. I disagree with people that said it was too sugary. The show dealt with some very serious issues and it was always beautifully written. You and the rest of the cast and crew, writers, directors and of course Earl Hamner Jr., all helped to produce magic. By the way, Judy, you look particularly beautiful.

I was so happy to see another video! This particular episode always resonated with my family. My Grandmother had 4 sets of twins and my Fathers twin was the only one who did not survive. They were born at home in 1942 and Dads twin was still born. Dad weighed only 1 lb 1 oz and survived. My Great Grandmother wrapped him in cotton wool and put him in a roasting pan in the warming oven in her giant wood stove to keep him warm. She fed him with an eye dropper. Dad lived in his warm , roasting pan for the first 6 months of his life and people would come by from all over just to look at the impossibly tiny baby asleep in his pan lol. Today, Dad remains one of the tallest, strongest men in his family . Edit to add- the warming oven was NOT the regular oven haha- i feel i should clear that up. It was a smaller cupboard on the top of the stove by the chimney were food would have been put to keep warm after it was finished . There was no fire in the warming oven!

@@judynorton2598 - Our daughter and her husband announced the coming arrival of their first baby to us and we were thrilled. This was a couple of months before Christmas. I was planning all sorts of things, like all new grandmothers do. Three weeks later, she called me and sadly announced that she had had a miscarriage. She was seeing a very experienced midwife instead of an OBGYN. They decided that since my daughter could easily identify what happened, given her college education had been heavy on the natural sciences, and she had NO trouble describing what she saw and how she felt. The midwife told her to stay home with her feet up for a few days, and to call her at the first sign of any problems. She did not go to a doctor to get a D&C. She did exactly what the midwife directed, and was back on her feet in a week. Two months later, she called me again and happily announced that she was STILL pregnant! No, not pregnant again - STILL pregnant! I asked how this came about - of course I know the birds and the bees! - but, she explained after the miscarriage, she never stopped "feeling pregnant." She told her midwife about it, and she was confused also, but had her come in for an ultrasound and a checkup. Turns out, she had apparently been carrying twins, but lost just the one. The other one was fine! And he was born several months later perfectly normal, and a special joy to us all. He will be 19 in June, and has 7 siblings! The youngest, a girl, is expected any minute now! This episode, which I loved even when new, has become a really special one for me. Thanks for your talented and special treatment of this episode. The relationship between Jim Bob and the others in the family was really highlighted well in this one, and will always be a standout for me. The end was of course very natural and touching. I think the look on Olivia's face displayed several emotions, not the least of which was relief! It was as if she immediately understood Jim Bob understood what had happened, and the pressure of hiding such a painful secret was suddenly gone. That's all easy to say about a character in a TV show, but the acting in the Walton's rarely missed the highest mark! This one certainly hit every high mark!

I remember when I flew up to the funeral of my paternal grandmother. My parents and Uncle Phillip drove up, from LA to Seattle, two days before. My uncle Ed met me and my sister at the Seattle Airport, as Mom and Uncle Phillip were in route, having stayed in central Oregon on Monday, due to poor weather conditions (it was early February). At Uncle Ed’s house I noticed a painting in the dining room, and Mom, as she came in the house commented on the painting, of my grandfather, which she and Dad saw when they came up to my aunt’s funeral, the summer before (Mom and Dad might have offered to bring it home with them). I then had to confess that I thought it was a painting of Uncle Phillip. That got Mom to note, once again, how much Uncle Phillip had come to look exactly like his father.

It is wonderful to think of all the "life lessons" that the Waltons taught us. The show has a special place in my heart, because my mothers maiden name was Walton. My grandfather taught me many good life lessons. I miss him everyday. Thanks for the great video.

Had lots of fun in my treehouse as a kid, hard pressed to get kids interested in such a thing these days , or even playing outdoors. You couldn’t get me to come indoors until that signaling pole light came on , indicating it’s time to come in for the night.

Thanks Judy, another great episode of The Waltons. I was really touched by the hug between Jim Bob and Olivia. The term dead line dates back to the Civil War and the POW camps of the South. Nora Marlowe was a great actress who appeared in many Western like Gunsmoke, I believe she was the first actor to pass away from the Waltons on 12/31/77. Her character was greatly missed, I remember when Curt told her she was fat. Her best part was in the episode about the book burning. One question I keep forgetting to ask you is, what television show is your favorite other then of course The Waltons. Take care, stay safe and GOD BLESS.

@Michael Kemp It's funny how sometimes an actor will say a memorable line in such a way as we "hear" it, for example, when the number on the scale is too high for me I 'hear' "Mrs. Brimmer, you are fat!" ☺️

Those childhood doubts and discoveries reign eternal; Harvey was the perfect directorial choice to enhance and conceptualize that timeless question of all questions, albeit: "Where did I come from? And the fact that Jim-Bob and John-Boy approached John with their discovery instead of devastating Olivia showed the superb content and quality of writing that echoed the morals of the time... Dogs in treehouses: I had a fawn pug growing up, a sweet, gentle old dog that would put up with my shenanigans until the time we hoisted her up into our own tree fort. My dad had to get the ladder and get her down, and the dog was so mad she hid from me for a week! Funny memory!

Losing a child is a loss like no other. It's a grief that never leaves a mother no matter how many years pass. I haven't lost a baby at birth, but I have buried a daughter. The loss of a child is a path no one chooses to walk. People often think that not mentioning a deceased child is better for the parent. They fear that speaking of that child reminds the parent of their loss. I can assure you that anyone who talks about my daughter isn't reminding me of my loss because she is always on my mind. Watching this episode after the death of my daughter gave me a very different perspective. It was very well done!!

Lynn, both my mom and one of my sisters suffered miscarriages; was tough for them. And a neighbor lost one of her children around the time my brother Michael was born. She came to see my mom and brother and she was like “This would be me”. She had twins after that, and then one more. She was quiet about it for a while, but would mention her son years later in Tribute to deceased family members.

When my cousin Billy was married in 1985, my parents knew the bride’s from the 1950s, when everyone lived around Washington DC. The bride’s mother and one of her aunts both died of cancer, years before, leaving only one aunt and the bride’s grandmother from the mother’s side. The grandmother enjoyed the wedding, but she confided to my mom that she felt that it was unfair that she was still alive while her two daughters were not. Mom understood her feelings, that you bury a parent, not a child. And my dad shared how his youngest aunt died (while pregnant with her first child) in an car accident. Dad accompanied my grandparents to the funeral and my great grandmother was with them at the ceremony. Then in 1988 my Aunt Carol, dad’s only sister and his youngest sibling, died of lung cancer a month before she turned 55. At the funeral my parents and my sister Elizabeth took charge of being with Grandmother Clifford, who was 91. They worried about how she would react Grandmother Clifford died 6 1/2 months later, 17 days shy of turning 92. Dad reflected on those times when he witnessed a mom at the funeral of a child, in his family. He told me that he didn’t want to ever escort my mom to the funeral of me, or any of my brothers and sisters. He even told my brother Patrick, his youngest child “Stick around”. Mom and Dad were probably relieved to know that they predecessors my brothers and sisters and I, plus their 6 grandchildren.

I just wanted to add to your comments about the term "deadline." It got the usage you discussed during the Civil War. Prisons were generally thrown up in a hurry and while they had gates and fences escaping wasn't necessarily a hard thing to do. So a line was placed well back of the fence that if a prisoner crossed, he would be shot. It later evolved into usage in non-military prisons as well. Loved this episode as well.

Jim Bob and Olivia definitely strengthened their bond at that moment. I wonder what if they were going to name the twin Robert...so they named Jim Bob...james Robert in honour of that. Seeing Judy Norton made me remember that of all of the Walton children, Mary Ellen was my favorite. She had that little bit of rebelliousness and stubbornness that set her apart from the rest. One episode that sticks with me is the one where Mary Ellen thinks that her nurse's training gives her enough know-how to diagnose Grandma Walton when she becomes ill, and it turns out that her mis-diagnosis nearly causes the death of Grandma.

Dear Judy, I can relate to Jim-Bob's story a bit. I was born shortly after the USA lost President Kennedy and was sometimes teased about the fact that my hometown was flooded by the Ohio River shortly after my birth (as if I somehow had something to do with these events). But I guess I learned that these events had nothing to do with what I would become; that would be up to me, and my mother and father really loved me as well as my brothers and sisters. We were all privileged to have parents, grandparents, extended family and many friends who have stood by us no matter what. Again, Judy, thanks for another great video, and I send you my best wishes.
