After the Warriors I checked out The Wanderers. Similar premise but a totally different vibe.
The Wanderers is a 1979 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Philip Kaufman and starring Ken Wahl, John Friedrich, Karen Allen, Toni Kalem, Tony Ganios and Jim Youngs. Set in the Bronx in 1963, the film follows a gang of Italian-American teenagers known as the Wanderers and their ongoing power struggles with rival gangs such as the Baldies and the Wongs.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Price; its screenplay was written by Philip Kaufman and his wife Rose. The film had a troubled development stage: after unsuccessfully trying to obtain financing for The Wanderers from Alberto Grimaldi, Kaufman directed other films. After filming the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Kaufman went to New York City and successfully pitched The Wanderers to Martin Ransohoff. The film's budget is unknown, but Kaufman said it was relatively low.[2]
After an advance screening, The Wanderers premiered on July 13, 1979, to mostly positive reviews. The film was a financial success, grossing $23 million at the worldwide box office.
The film's increasing popularity and cult status led to The Wanderers being given a theatrical re-release in the U.S. by Warner Bros. in 1996. According to Kaufman, "it took a long time for [the film] to find [an] audience".

Wow! NOBODY ever reacts to or even acknowledges this film and it's one of my all time faves. The Bronx, or that way of life in general is long gone...Great job once again. And btw, the character Perry was actually 19 during filming lol. Joey & Richie were 20 & 21.

Always loved the Wanderers ever since I use to watch it on cable in the late 70's early 80's as a kid. Very sadly under rated and largely forgotten thanks for giving it a watch! I think it's kinda pointless comparing it with the Warriors since they are very different kind of films with different intentions etc... both classic though.

The Wanderers is far more comparable to A Bronx Tale which has bigger actors and a much clearer story and message. The way Wanderers tells it's story is more interesting and deserving of being consider a classic.

Straight from the streets of the mid-1960s Bronx comes a book about one of the borough's most feared gangs - The Ducky Boys. While their unusual name alone might contradict their reputation, in the Norwood/Bainbridge section of the Bronx their appearances provoked an ominous dread. So much so, that when Richard Price needed inspiration for a terrifying gang in his novel (and later movie) The Wanderers, he knew exactly which gang to choose. Lost Boys of the Bronx tells the story of the Ducky Boys in their own words. It is a story of how a few pre-teen kids in the Botanical Gardens turned into a gang of hundreds - and a gang so alarming that rumours of their arrival would shut down local schools. This is also a study of the mostly Irish Bronx neighbourhood in which the Ducky Boys were born, and where so many of the Ducky kids got caught up in the tumultuous times of the '60s where their fierce loyalty was the only thing that got them through. This is not your typical gang book. It neither praises nor demonizes the gang for the things they did, but rather simply reports what happened - warts and all. You'll see the truth behind the Ducky Boys' gang - their lives, their loves, their pranks and crimes, and so much more. To borrow from a particular product's slogan - with a name like the Ducky Boys, you knew they HAD to be tough.

Thank you. I'm going to buy that book. I knew this movie was loosely based on real gangs from that time period. I also heard that the book was based more on the real goings on,....more graphic. I'm from Chicago and wrote a book on Chicago street gang history.

I'm half Irish/Italian myself so I got along with both. I know growing up here everyone was racists but it was more a funny thing. I had black people call me all kinds of things that had me in stitches. We never really hated each other we were just segregated. We had whole neighborhoods that were all Irish. If you went into that town they would be just like the ducky boys to a stranger. They would follow you and before you know it the whole neighborhood was chasing you lol. They were mysterious to anyone who didn't live there. The motto of the place is they keep a code of silence.

Your reactions never disappoint mate, nicely done. You might consider ( if you haven't seen them already ) Green street with Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam, and The Firm, 1989 with Gary Oldman, I think you'd enjoy them.
