@@MikeGastin I got a grade which was more than wanted. The project was literature and this is subject I suck the most but I still score higher than most my class mates. The score I was aiming for was just around a B- but I actually got A on the subject I struggle the most and this was my mid term exam too, so I can thank you enough on how munch this video has helped me.

Thanks, Chris! I got some grief for the gnostic comment, but stand by it. Glad you agree. And, yes, gnosticism has permeated the American church for sure, and not just "liberal" churches. It seems to be everywhere. A great book on the topic is "Gnostic America" by Peter Burfeind. Author does a good job showing how Gnosticism has influenced so much of our culture in the US. According to Wikipedia, as well as a general Google search, The Legend of Bagger Vance is listed as Pressfield’s first book. Do you have better intel?

@@MikeGastin I emailed Stephen, I have listend to The Art of War several times and read the book and I didn't think his first book was Bagger Vance, plus amazon has other books as published first. I'll updated this when I hear back from Stephen.

@@MikeGastin I haven't heard back. I went to amazon and looked inside The legend of Bagger Vance book copyright 1995 and the war of art 2002. books are copywriter a few different times but I think I viewed things correctly.

Okay, but where exactly do you think New Age folks get their ideas from? A lot of New Age spirituality traces its roots to Gnosticism, which pulls from platonic and neoplatonic thought. Would you agree?

@@MikeGastin I would say from Judeo-Christian thought, aspects of Platonic cosmology borrowed by them and repurposed. I don't use the term Neo Platonic much myself, sort of a modern concept, I would just describe it as late indigenous European thought, but certainly pre Christian. I would not call Plato, Plotinus, Marcus Aurelius, etc., even remotely New Age, rather the opposite.

I should have been more clear. I am also not calling Plato and crew new age. I was referring to them when I said platonic and Neoplatonic. I really don’t have a dog in this fight. I made that vid a few years ago. I’d have to rewatch to get at specifics, which I am not going to do. That said, I do recall some of Pressfield’s take to be new age. He infuses his language in the second half of the book with unorthodox mysticism and talks about our creative muses and so on. I am fine if you want to label things otherwise, but his ideas and language in the second half are clearly aligned with New Age mysticism, Gnosticism, and even a dash of Jung (who was also a Gnostic and was fascinated by Hermeticism). Yes, these things overlap with Christianity. And yes, a lot of these things draw from Platonic forms, etc. But, you’re free to fashion a view that’s better suited for you, if that’s what you’re after. I wasn’t trying to damn the book or the author, but was saying that this aspect of Pressfield’s work disappointed me and even detracted from the very good argument he shared.

@@MikeGastin clear is always good lad. My read on Pressfield is he has become a student of what I would call indigenous European spiritual cosmology via his interest in Hellenic people and culture. I could be wrong, but, listening to him . In my Cosmos, I group Judeo-Christian spirituality, Gnosticism, any version of New Age-ism, etc., all from the same source. Which gets me back to Plato and indigenous original pre Christian European spiritual cosmology. With this I mean Yamnaya, Corded Ware folk, to Bell Beaker, there is a train of thought, or an awareness of the Cosmos, with is a continuum. I have never spoken with Pressfield, but I suspect this is of what he speaks. I mean the ancients, be them Hellenic, Celtic, etc., they knew these concepts of which he speaks. Not New Age. The opposite.

Thanks, James! My main issue with gnosticism is that it suggests we can find salvation through knowlege, and usually "self knowlege" attained through various experiences. My understanding of the universe and mankind is that salvation is found through the Truth and that this Truth is embodied in the person of Christ, the true limitless font of love, life, and truth. That's why I made the comment I did and why I do not follow a more gnostic approach to life. I do not think we can save our selves.

Agreed. What difference does it make if he’s into Gnosticism, Catholicism, Pragmatism, Krishna, or Voodoo?? Whatever it is has made him highly successful, and extremely famous. I’m just glad that he’s magnanimous enough to share it with us! By following his example, perhaps we can become immensely successful as well

@@Tonabillity Never said it makes a difference, did I? I said the book is excellent and I gave Pressfield every compliment and much respect. I just said that for me, Gnostic/New Age spirituality doesn't do it. And ... then I went on to say, "you should read this book anyway." I guess the real question is, what difference does it make that I mentioned the Gnostic aspect of this book? Why should I not share what I found questionable, especially when I was gracious about it? I do think that by following Pressfield's example, you can become successful and I wish you the best.
