The War of the Worlds is in the public domain in Australia where this Audiobook was recorded.
--
The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells, first serialised in 1897 by Pearson's Magazine in the UK and by Cosmopolitan magazine in the US.
Written between 1895 and 1897, it is one of the earliest stories to detail a conflict between mankind and an extra-terrestrial race and is one of the most commented-on works in the science fiction canon.
The plot has been related to invasion literature of the time. The novel has been variously interpreted as a commentary on evolutionary theory, British imperialism, and generally Victorian superstitions, fears, and prejudices. Wells said that the plot arose from a discussion with his brother Frank about the catastrophic effect of the British on indigenous Tasmanians. What would happen, he wondered, if Martians did to Britain what the British had done to the Tasmanians, who were wiped out with the last dying in 1876.
The War of the Worlds has been both popular (having never been out of print) and influential, spawning half a dozen feature films, a record album, various comic book adaptations, a number of television series, and radio dramas, the most infamous being the 1938 radio programme directed by and starring Orson Welles that allegedly caused public panic among listeners who did not know the Martian invasion was fictional, although the scale of panic is disputed as the program had relatively few listeners.
The book was banned immediately in China, Japan, Vietnam, as well as North America due to political and scientific theories touted by the novel.

It's eerie how some of what's written would become a reality. The Martians destroying ammo depots, telegraph lines, and towns (the Total War of world war), the black poisonous smoke (chemical weapons), mass numbers of refugees fleeing, heat rays (lasers), the Martians pushing through military lines to hit targets deep within (blitzkrieg).

Today I reflect on how much better books are than movies. Oh how I wonder if this would still be true if time limits were completely forgotten about !?! This book is like a constant horror ! nail & teeth biting... gripping & clasping for comfort > u get none !! So surprised I'd never heard of this ! yeah, my mom & dad certainly knew bout it. I watched the film some years back, so I am excited to see, well, hear the differences to the book. HG Wells is a great author, but Jack London is one of my favourites. I'd be happy if you could produce a few of his books as well. I heard good things about Iron Heel, but haven't read that one yet. It's a dystopian novel with an underlying political message about fascism (apparently). Think you like books like that, too. Edit: Very, very different. Completely different character, and obviously less communication and technology as this is set in the 19th century.

@@SteveParkerAudiobooks I know, I noticed, but it's still very unique and chilly. Personally think HG Wells started strong, but got weaker and weaker towards the end in this book. The last few chapters are so uneventful... Also noticed that he tries to write from an I perspective, but then he assumes emotions and thoughts of other people and includes information "he only learned later on" which breaks the immersion quite a bit. Defeats the whole purpose of the first person perspective. And I STILL miss that there was no conclusion for his brothers character.. When he first introduced the character and his flight, I thought we'd hear more of him and they would dramatically meet again somewhere, somehow. It's a classic still because the idea was so, literally, alien and unique, but I don't think it's that great. Sorry to say. But you are a really amazing narrator and listening to you makes it so much easier to stay focused on my data entry jobs. Otherwise I'd just give up after 20 minutes and do something else.
