The 'War Thunder CLASSIFIED Document Leaks' are a hoax?!

NOTES:
-This video is not sponsored! We have no affiliation with War Thunder.
-While we did find many restricted documents in our search, you won't find links to any of them in our citations.
Last month, a user on the War Thunder gaming forum posted a complete technical manual for the AH-64D Apache Longbow. Based on our research, this could be as high as the 30th time a document of this sort has found its way into War Thunder’s forums.
With yet another batch of restricted documents now apparently leaked on forums associated with this popular game, these breaches of security have gone from semi-comedic novelty to what sure seems like a legitimate threat to the national security of more than one nation… But are they really?
Our research suggests... no. Let's dive into it.

I think WarThunder is more concerned about legal implications than serious intelligence issues. By cracking down hard on this kind of thing they can also in theory prevent actual serious leaks

And, yet, Gaijin enables this behavior because when someone says something is incorrect with the game, they have a VERY long and ironclad history of never changing their opinion or vehicles or mechanics in-game unless someone provides documentation to prove them wrong. It's been like this since the game was in its infancy in 2013. It's not new. It hasn't changed. Only thing that has changed is we're no longer dealing with purely WW2-era aircraft and we have Cold War and post-Cold War aircraft being added (which Gaijin said at one point that they'd never add, so go figure).

@@matchesburn I don't have experience with it, though why do I see players talk about 'nerfing' and such? The planes seem to be positioned and tweaked like characters in Apex Legends, like they follow a meta for what is a competitive MMO grind out? I've seen some argue about the capabilities of the in game Mig-29's AoA flight modelling and such while still remaining highly inaccurate (apparently?), although to me it wouldn't matter. They're not tweaking it according to how truly accurate it is according to either classified or unclassified data, they are managing its in game popularity for success (commercially at the publishers end). Otherwise they have no game. If you ask me, I rather think it would be an effective way to ferret out potential weasels.

To clarify, many other (not US) countries have four levels of classified information, the lowest level of which is "Restricted". When a country shares that info with the US, we handle it at the Confidential level as the US does not have a fourth classification level. What Alex was calling restricted in the US would have been documents with a DOD Distribution Statement. That would state what organizations the document was authorized to be distributed to (such as DOD only, DOD and Contractors, public release, etc), and they would all be unclassified.

It baffles me that people would do this for a game, or for a heated discussion on the forums. Media reception is always a but clueless and they try to exaggerate things to get the attention of the readers.

I have example sorta, I was in Explorers in 1999. One really rainy day in southern California it was just us high school students and one retired engineer, the other engineers couldn't make it because the Freeways were just a mess that afternoon. So with nothing to do we asked the retired engineer who worked on the George Washington-class ballistic submarine class subs about his work. We asked him a question we all had since we found out he worked them on, how did they test warhead technology in terms of guidance and hitting targets in 1960's (yes we were massive nerds). After an exacerbated sigh, he agreed to tell use and then gave us very rudimentary explanation on Polaris. How the Polaris missile test vehicles were built and then tested, along with a very basic diagram of the inside of prototype gen 1 Polaris missile warhead with guidance system. All based on what he could remember from his work in the 1960's. It was still one of coolest things I ever heard. Now after about 10 minute he looked at his very basic drawing and said, 'Oh crap, I was probably not allowed to show you some of this. So just don't mentioned it to the others and never discuses exactly what I drew.' He then took the drawings and placed them in the sink poured water on them till they were mush before throwing them away. To date I never have gone into detail from what I remember, only to remark I have seen declassified diagrams of Polaris missiles and noticed things were left out, we'll leave it at that. But mind you this is all based on 40 year old test technology by 1999, now 60 years old. Extremely simplified for a handful of High School kids in Explorers program in the late 90's. By a retired engineer using what he could remember 40 years ago (at that time) who admitted at the time was probably be overly cautious.

The calculations for figuring out a radar cross section involve geometry/trig/calculus depending on what you want to know and how detailed you want to know it. What, are you suggesting that when you're learning calculus in school there's the "secret" version of calculus that they aren't allowed to teach you unless you've got a security clearance or something. I like the "FOUO" challenge, that is to say, printing off these publicly available documents like flight manuals and trying to cross the relevant nations borders with them. "Aquiring" isn't the problem here though, "Distributing" is. Export controls and classification levels are no joke and its a sad sign of the time if active and past members of the defence community are so willing to share things they know that they should not. It's irrelevant how easy they are to access, or what information a potential adversary has, the classification or controls still stand.

But even that example aside, there are many illegal actions that are committed frequently (such as speeding, piracy, etc), but are only enforced in more extreme or noteworthy cases. "Worked out real well for DCS Devs when they got smacked with smuggling" There's a difference between someone smoking a joint in California and someone smugging 200 tons of hashish across the border into Iran. Time and place. Nuance. What you're trying to demonstrate is a false equivalence. What happened with the DCS devs is they were disseminating and distributing these. That doesn't mean that you, personally, having them is an issue. There's plenty of software that you can, personally, use free and clear for your own purposes. If you tried using it for a company with 500 people without licensing or purchasing it... You're going to run into an issue. The circumstances are not the same. It might *_seem_* like a trivial detail, but it isn't.

@@matchesburn Sure, i'll give you that it's not really about the acquisition of the materials itself, was more of a general statement about things like this being digital not being a disqualifier. What do you think is being done when these documents are being uploaded to say, a video game forum for potentially hundreds or more people to see/acquire? Because there's about 3 arguments that could be made for disseminating the information. The first being the sharing of the document to the forum by the individual themselves. The second being that the platform, in hosting it publicly, is acting as a distributor. Further, the company once again if they publish said information via the game. The latter two are solved by the company removing said information, and not using it to change in game stats. But the individual themselves did very much intend to post it to that platform. Intended to distribute these materials publicly.

I mean I grew up in the 90's and 00's so toxic gaming was as big or bigger of a problem than it is now, but the toxicity we showed each other back then in games like the Halo franchise for instance was nothing like it is now. For most of us, it was about the competitiveness but more often than not(at least with me and my friends) we would make sure that people know were just fuckin around with the trash talk, but nowadays they're vile towards each other going as far as to make death threats just for killing someone in a FPS game(COD/Battlefield) or in PVP in a MMORPG(Everquest/World of Warcraft). I actually have recently started playing a lot of Armored Warfare's PvE game mode because you get to play with players on your team, but against bots who's difficulty changes on the mission getting harder as you progress so it does have some challenge to it.

I'm in my early 40s now and simply put, I don't care for the stress that competitive stuff brings. Sure some people absolutely love that stuff, but it isn't my definition of fun anymore. But that isn't to say I don't enjoy some seriously tough things at times. I like true difficulty (as opposed to garbage like simply making enemies into bullet sponges). I have been gaming since 1984 or so, a bit before the NES came out. My dad gave me his old Atari 2600 and Microvision. I was instantly hooked and likely will be until I die. By the time online multiplayer games even came out, I was already starting to get annoyed by how some people acted, even in person let alone over a network. Still LAN parties were an awesome thing at one time and I'll never forget the fun I had playing stuff like Empire Earth at them with friends. Besides stress, a lot of online gaming seems more like work than play these days. Even a lot of singleplayer stuff seems that way, but it doesn't begin to compare with how bad the online stuff can be. At least imo. Also like you said, the level of toxicity that exists today is orders of magnitude worse than the worst shit talking I used to engage in with my buddies. Plus it isn't coming from friends, but random little turds that just happened to get into the same match or whatnot. My friends have earned the right to talk shit and know how far they can take it, random turds, they have not and do not. As for Project Wingman, if you love Ace Combat, there is a 99.99999% chance you will love the game. It is basically a love letter to Ace Combat with a postscript talking about how much it loves Macross. It isn't just a knockoff, it is a good game in its own right that even does some things better, such as the gunplay being far superior. And instead of a multiplayer as its second mode of play, there is a rougelike mode called conquest that is a ton of fun. The game also lets you reset your progress, so that you can play like you just started the game (like back in the day when we would delete the saves from our memory card just so we could unlock everything once more). It has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard as well. I put around 500 hours into Ace Combat 7 (without touching its multiplayer at all), I put around 350 hours into Project Wingman. edit: Yes, a game played at a LAN party would be a networked game and thus technically be online in a manner of speaking, but I think most people differentiate between LAN gaming and WAN gaming.

The SR-71 Pilot Manual is available online. If THAT aircraft precise performance and operational information is available online, I don't think an F-15E manual is going to interest the KGB. They designed the MIG-25 after taking photos of the NAA Vigilante prototype... Almost shares the same wing and inlets.

...Project Oxcart was *_fully declassified_* years ago. It's a museum piece that isn't and can't fly again (the decommissioned SR-71s had the oil drained from their engines and were forced to run until they seized). I have absolutely no idea why they would be your ultimate high bar for classified technology. It's been out-of-service, in a museum and declassified for years upon years.

At a time were a aingle snapchat picture can allow an enemy group to sink a major importance ship like an aircraft carrier (it really happened during exercise between opposing fleets), I really agree with your point that these so-called leaks aren't really that much threatening. In a time were weapons manufacturers needs to export their production to decrease operating costs, it's bound to happen that important file regarding them are well shared and will leak more easily
@richardwillson101
@richardwillson101 7 ай бұрын
But they ARE threatening when you consider what the leaks show... A willingness of active and past defence community individuals to give out information that they KNOW is export controlled or restricted in other ways. It's a MAJOR problem, even if the information itself isn't that valuable. One day it WILL be when people ignore such things.

@@richardwillson101 Throughout this entire list of so-called leaks, there's only been a few that CLAIMED (and, hey, I'm claiming I'm the King of England, you better believe it, you heard it on the internet) to be service members or contractors. I mean, I can get on the WT forums right now and claim I'm the CEO of Lockheed-Martin and the F-22A actually uses the tears of unicorns for its fuel while linking to already known OSINT information. Doesn't mean I'm telling the truth and doesn't mean it's a leak.

I find it funny that some of those 'classified' documents for aircraft are part of DCS aircraft manuals, not to mention that in media F-15's MFDs are blurred out while exactly the same video feeds and images the censure are displayed in DCS. I remember when they had to find publicly accessible data for helmet to ground target designation of A-10 to be legally allowed to just copy paste code for it from USAF DCS to civilian DCS

War Thunder is the number one training-tool for most underequipped armored forces. If they wanted to collect M.Bison style "Combat data" they could. Its a great window for social engeering. If the clan of the 1./Armored hasnt been online for a long time, you get pretty good intelligence as well. Classified often doesnt mean sensitive. You can find "classified" military data on wikipedia.

Controlled unclassified information is usually restricted under ITAR in the US and there are probably similar restrictions for information controlled at the same level in other countries. That means that a US citizen, or any person located in the US, who shares such information online is in violation of ITAR, at a minimum. That means that if the US government catches wind of that activity, as innocuous as it may seem to an average person, they will be getting a visit from the FBI and may be in legal jeopardy.

Iirc only the challenger leak was an actual one but it told us literally nothing of value. The rest are just people getting freely available pdfs that are technically CUI which is a slight risk to gaijin. All this controversy really tells me is how easily manipulated and poor at using the internet most people are seeing as just about every document "leaked" can be found on the first page of Google.
