I love when they travel to non-Spanish speaking countries and they chant "Otra! Otra! Otra!"

The first time they were in Germany, they were received at the mexican embassy. They are ambassadors after all and we can honor that. I actually don't know what you chant in english. (encore is french, right? (edit: "Zugabe" would be the german word to chant.)

Being bi-lingual, you know and understand what they are saying. Juan Gabriel was one of the best song writers ever and the 2,000 songs he wrote were beautiful with every word meaning and fitting exactly how and where it belongs. The Spanish language has more meaning, sentiment and feeling than the exact word in English. Anyone who is bi-lingual can attest to that.

As a native spanish speaker I can attest to that. Not only words in spanish are longer with more syllables but also inflection is very tricky in order to make words and sentences sound right when sung. Specially for rock music, where you often need very punchy lines.

There's a fantastic clip of an interview with J. L. Borges here on KZfaq. An Argentinian author, and native Spanish speaker, but who wrote mostly in English. He gave 3 main reasons for his preference for writing in English. 1. English is both Germanic and Latin. This means you have at least 2 ways of saying everything, and both have subtle differences. Ex. Regal vs Kingly. 2. English is "the most physical of all language", he gave the example of phrases like, "loomed over". Phrases that give a very physical depiction, but one that ultimately inspires a feeling in the reader. 3. The ability to combine basically any combination of verb and preposition and have it mean something. Ex, "Dream on" rather having to say something like "Will continue to dream"

Good Question Don Francisco... XXI Century doubt? Spanish is beautiful as any languaje but is complex to write songs and sing too. Is very different. Dany is the only Front woman (singer/guitar) that slays it in both languajes... perfect.

Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish has said that writing poetry is a lot easier in English than in his native language, Finnish. As for Spanish being more wordy than English, I saw this a lot working in restaurants, where most things are labeled in both languages. So something like "plastic film" in English becomes "papel de plastico por envoltura de comida".

They have said that when they went viral it was from English songs, so they wanted to cater to their fanbase which was English leaning. And it was a smart move on their part, but even smarter to have a few Spanish songs!

@@mikecumbo7531 Dany indeed uses (still does?) a nice ... well, I wouldn't call it accent because its the only difference I notice, its a ch sound that I think doesn't exist in english, but its not enough to make it a spanish accent. (mind you, I'm german. My english is ok but I can't differentiate between american accents. I understood the OP as "they don't sound mexican." )

One thing about malinchistas is that they will always try to deny or justify their malinchista tendencies. Unfortunately it IS true that they are somewhat disconnected from their Mexican culture when it comes the musical aspect. However, they are not the ones to be blamed for how their parents raised them when it comes to musical preferences. Personally i applaud them for at least trying to sing and compose in spanish. I hope they investigate and delve deeper into their own rich Mexican musical heritage. What we as mexican society can and should work on is for our future generation of youth to break with the vicious cycle of malinchista tendencies in their own parenting. I am still waiting for the day when Mexicans proudly and publicly reference their own people as idols and role models instead of outside impositions and influences being their principal and constant reference As Mexicans we can sing in spanish english or whatever. That is not the issue. The issue is whether one is firmly grounded in ones own identity and culture and the normalization of assimilation and acculturation only contributes to the degradation and destruction of that Breaking stereotypes or gaining a place in the mainstream and colonial system doesnt have to come at the expense of Mexican peoples essence, culture and identity If were going to be recognized and respected then let it be as Mexicans and not as cheap carbon copies of the imposed culture. And with this i dont imply that we cant use the spanish or english colonially imposed dialects, its just simply about not loosing or degrading our own culture and identity in the process and staying firmly planted in our own essence.

English is literally the only language singing sounds good in because it’s the most descriptive. You can only do so much in other languages. Especially languages like Spanish where almost all the words end in O or A…
@ASGC49
@ASGC49 21 күн бұрын
The problem with Spanish isn't so much the letter words end in, rather that many of them are longer than their English translation. Monosyllabic words can be a songwriter's best friend and English is full of them. So, you can fit more words into the same number of syllables if you choose them properly and make more complex lyrics. An example of working around that is ¿Qué más quieres? which if I recall correctly was originally written in English and they changed it. "Dime, ¿qué más quieres?" Is 4 words and 6 syllables in Spanish and in English "Tell me, what more do you want?" is 7 syllables to get the same sentence.
