Echo Pass itself these rails will forever be known as The Land of Big Boy! From North Ogden to Rock Springs these rails are the core of the Transcontinental Railroad. If you want action you will get some as the trains of the Transcontinental Railroad make their way between Rock Springs and North Ogden. In 2014 Big Boy returned to his kingdom and began the slow climb up the hill that made him famous to Cheyenne. Later in Return of Big Boy we will explore what it took to restore this legend to life as Big Boy heads back to North Ogden this time under his own power.

I was at the Ogden mall recently looking at the train museum and they showed me a model of the Big Boy and explained some of the details. Absolutely unbelievable pulling power and the super interesting way it got its name. Supposedly some random guy wrote "big boy" on the front and they just stuck with it.

Wow! Brings back a lot of memories. I grew up in Ogden in the 50's and 60's and spent a lot of my youth fishing in the Weber river, and watchin' trains. I was about 10 when the Big Boys and Challengers were retired, but I saw a lot of the Turbines and early diesels! Great video!

June, 2012, I'm on #6, the eastbound Zephyr, heading from the Bay Area to Chicago. Imagine my surprise on waking up on the second day, expecting to see the Gilluly Loops and Soldier Summit, and seeing a westbound stack train instead🤔. It was only after we had passed Evanston that I realised we were on the Overland Route. We tied down at Green River, WY, for some time to wait for a fresh crew to be flown out of Denver. So, seeing this video brought back some happy memories and made alive the sights that I saw on that journey. Great videography and narration. Thanks 7idea productions.

Oh yeah, great footage from one of my favorite stretches of heavy rails... You caught me in the photo line along with the late Jim Wrinn at Castle Rock. And finally we met on the Green River pedestrian bridge, two guys with big Sonys on tripods... Maybe you remember the moment. Haven't published my most of my 2014 footage except for the Big Boy train. After all, the proceeds of the DVD/Blu-ray paid me the entire 4-week trip along the UP. Some day I'll find the time again to finish the remainder... Keep up the good work, Aaron!

33:50 Good catch of the last unpatched Southern Pacific AC4400CW 343! It is sad to see it repainted into UP colors, SP's AC4400CW's are my favorite diesel of the Southern Pacific railroad (unless if UP hadn't taken over SP, couldn't know which SP diesels of the future is my favorite) after Daylight 4449 is my favorite steamer of the SP!

Excellent video. One comment I'd add is that the "grain trains" of all bulk hopper cars were probably really soda ash trains returning empty from having delivered 10,000 tons f Of soda ash to ship leaving Seattle. ANSAC (American Natural Soda Ash Corporation) is the export service used by all of Wyoming us producers. The same bulk hoppers are used for soda ash or grain.. Particularly during harvest season you have to be certain the has been cleaned before you fill it. Thanks for a great video. I live in Evanston who it was particularly pleasant for me

When referring to the crane that u said was in Kansas the city is pronounced Saleyena, Ks. The I in Salina is long. I know it's where I live. Retired in 2018 from UP as a conductor for 46 yrs. the last I knew & that was a few yrs ago it was still here stationed with panel & rock cars for derailments. Very much enjoy your vids they r professionally done. Thk u.

Funny enough with that 211 car monster manifest.. I actually saw a train that was only 10 cars higher than the car count on that train last year in Austell, GA and aside from one lone NS Geep, 80% percent of the 5 locomotives on that monster train were all UP.

Excellent video of a route I get to watch frequently driving between SLC and Laramie, WY. So much to see on every trip. It's amazing the lack of situational awareness at Evanston watching the 4014 as other photographers walk right in front of your camera...as if you're not even there 🙄

The other UP turbine engine is at the Illinois Railway Museum. They also have a DDA40X which is not in as nice condition wise but both of these are a beast and way way bigger in person. Id give my left nut to ride in a loco, esp a older real loco.

5:30 all journeys over the Transcontinental Railroad have to begin someplace and that someplace is here the heart of the network Union Station in North Ogden right next to the busy 32nd Street Junction and The Yards of North Ogden themselves. In the 1800s four tracks came though this junction to bring rolling stock onto the network. They are the UP, the SP, the Rio Grange, and the WP. The Rio Grande Freeport Sub is abandoned and their tracks are now used by Utah Rail and Utah Central to service Freeport Yard which has been turned into an industrial park. The WP Salt Lake Sub has been made into a second track which fallows the Union Pacific Central Line all the way to Warm Springs Yard in Salt Lake. The UP Central Line continues past the camera to 17th Street Junction where it heads north as the Ogden Sub to Cache where is heads on the new line built in 95 across Ballard Reservoir to Thornton and on to Dayton before rejoining the the old line built in 1872 to McCammon Junction and on to Pocatello. The final line in this area is the Lakeside Sub of the Southern Pacific which goes across the Salt Lake to Wells before rejoining the WP line at Alzon Junction. The Yards of North Ogden are always busy the 17th Street Yard houses the yard office and the UP mechanical department in the past they also had an ice house. Riverdale Yard on the UP is where trains are put together and broken apart for their journey across the Transcontinental Railroad. Stack trains and through freights use the bypass track which bypasses the yards to 32nd Street Junction and they remain on the left side all the way to Salt Lake and Warm Springs Yard. Trains continuing westbound change crews at Warm Springs and head to Grant Interlocking and west on the Shafter Sub to Wells where they rejoin the main line at Alzon Junction while locals and trains headed to Colton and Denver head south at Grant Interlocking to Roper Yard where they are broken apart. Trains bound for LA can take the Lyndell Sub to Delta or they can take the Sharp to Provo on the Rio Grande and the Lamington Sub to Delta but all tracks head to Vegas and south to Barstow and Colton. At Provo Rio Grande tracks begin and trains head east over Soldier Summit but that will be covered later in another program.

34:15 The truss bridges in the video seem to be in need of some maintenance. One assumes the company performs regular inspections of all bridges as the loss of just one would put their operations, thus profits, in a bind. Great video. Well done.

Premium intermodal train. Up has contracts with big intermodal companies like ups. They have to deliver their freight on time otherwise they get a free delivery or massively reduced pricing. They have priority over other trains.
