This stunning 18K Gold Minute Repeater has Henry Capt Geneve printed on its enamel dial. But did the great swiss watchmaker ever set eyes on this stunning pocket watch?
Henry Daniel Capt was born in a place called Chenit in La Vallee de Joux in 1773 which makes him a direct contemporary to Napoleon Bonaparte. This video describes the function of this minute repeater pocket watch and looks the the contrasting lives of the man named on it's dial, Henry Capt and the Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte.
The theme of the need of the peace and calm to create beautiful watches is touched upon and it is something that I will be revisiting in future videos and publications.
This video is 'pretty epic' and enhanced with historical gameplay footage.

Hi Jimmy ... and I actually feel a little the weight of history on me as I work on a piece like this. I have to do the absolute best job I am capable of in respect for the brilliance of the gys that went before us on this. This guys new how to make a great watch ... and there was not even electric light, a car or a computer in sight. Thanks for the feeback. Richard

I really enjoy watching your reviews and information productions like this. Fascinating just reading about the history of various people and their watches, like how one of Napoleon's watches ended up in Cuba. I came across another video on a tangent to this one of yours, where they mentioned that the first "known" wristwatch was made by Breguet for Napoleon's sister Caroline Murat.

Thank you Richard really enjoyed the video ,love the history behind the piece as well. I never ceases to amaze me how in an era before mass industrialisation such practice and complicated instruments could be manufactured. How long would it have taken to produce a watch like this back then? Nice one . Thank you. 👍🙂

I really enjoyed the history lesson. You make it very interesting. What a beautiful piece of machinery to have as a horological benchmark to wind (pun alert!) into a better-known, but no less fascinating history of warfare. I can't wait to see the next instalment. I'm known for being a bit shaky myself and it has always been difficult to explain to people who know me well, how I came to take up watchmaking. Your explanation of how you overcame your jumpiness is perfect and I plan to use it. :)

Hi Chris ... apologies for the delay in response. I am so pleased you enjoyed this video and found it helpful. Time at the watchbench working calmly to effect the best result possible is I figure just in itself a wholesome thing .. the mind needs to be calm and focused all the while or the work is simply not possible. If I start to lose focus or my mind wander to frequently then I simply go and do something else fo a bit. Thanks so much for this feedback. Richard

A minute repeater in action. This is so beautiful and so complex at the same time. Will you be able to assemble this complication ever again? This will be a challenge for any watchmaker. I will have to wait a week to see the result..... To use an Invicta watch box as the ultimate deterrent for thieves.....that is really ingenious. I have three of those boxes. Thanks for the tip!

Great video, but wow what a spectacular work of art. I think there is something quite magical about this type of watch even just the sound of the chimes is enchanting.. The amount of original thought that would have had to gone into a minute repeater is mind boggling. Imagine sitting down to create such a complication. Where would you start? And the skill and artistry to then carve pieces of such a movement like the snails, how appropriate, out of blocks of metal.. The history and romance of your telling the story further adds to the enjoyment of viewing your video. Horology at it’s best. Of course today we have the intricacies of a tourbillion complication but designed and created no doubt with the aid of computers.. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode and looking forward to seeing how the service progresses and the history unfolds ..

That really is a very sophisticated timepiece in terms of appearance as well as mechanical complication. An exceedingly enjoyable video, thank you. I'd very much like to have a closer look at the arrangement of snails and racks for the striking mechanism, such things being familiar in general terms from clocks, of course. It's an awful lot of complexity to shoehorn into watch case though.
