A good old fashioned tale of revenge. And it's Steampunk. Win win.

I took apart an alarm clock once. It was still all wound up, and I didn't know how powerful the spring was when I pulled it loose; the thing lashed out, uncoiled as big as my hand and almost cut my eye. Be safe around clockwork, kids.

I always saw this narration as given face-to-face in a victorian era train with a prominent window. I can actually visualise the camera angles for this, but lack the equipment to pull it off. The vision of this work is almost intoxicating, with a taste like an old sherry caske, but I doubt I could do this song or that vision justice. This song isn't just auditory, it's visual, olefactory and even has a taste to it that must be blended togeather into a true work of art that this diserves.

If you wind a pocket watch's springs to tight and someone wound it again for time, at some point the springs wouldn't be able to take the pressure and the watch would explode very violently. The fact that the watch is such a small thing and the springs are compressed would mean that if a watch were to explode in your front pocket, being even more compressed, it would send gears and chunks of metal through to your heart. Sorry for the lengthy explanation.

I've pictured the watch being rigged to be a clockwork bomb. That's what I took the power in those tightly wound springs to be, the ability to make the gears themselves into a mechanized weapon. To me, it seems fitting that the mechanisms that create the watch are the are the same mechanisms that end the young man.

@TheLightYagami That is technically true, yes. This would probably falling under the clockpunk genre, but honestly, considering many of the people and - by extension - bands at large who considers themselves steampunk, but are just fancily-clad goth, well...

Ok People, first there was "Cyberpunk", originally introduced by William Gibson, which talked about the future and "matrix" like stuff. Then came Steampunk, which was kind of the opposite. Instead of telling the future it told of an alternate past, a past where we never advanced but were stuck in the age of steam. Dieselpunk, Arcanepunk, Clockpunk? These are all just smaller parts of Steampunk. If you read any sort of Steampunk novel or story there usually are plenty of examples of each one.

@Hagane0Kitsune Never heard of Clockpunk, and think it is a pointless description. The musical genres are based on the established literary and art genres that preceded them. The music was intended to go hand in hand with the rest of the movement Steampunk is Neo-Victorian from hindsight of modern technology. Included are clockworks, Airships and an influence of musical theater (which was popular in the 1890s). DieselPunk is the 1940s and all things from that era. The era is the genre name.

I'm not sure that he created a bomb exactly, just a means of getting to the gentleman's heart. He mentions "a terrible strength in those tightly wound springs" so perhaps a concealed blade was involved too. The odd thing is though that the fob watch is often carried the lower waistcoat pocket, closer to the intestine or kidney than anything else.

Dr Steel is as much dieselpunk as he is steampunk. We define these genres thematically, as opposed to through beats or instruments or other physical quantities, and because these are alternate pasts that have never existed what defines them ultimately is completely subjective. It's not for me, or anyone else other than the viewer to decide, so please, let's stop bickering about who's a what-now and just enjoy the good music :)
