The Waterboys' long-awaited new album Modern Blues was released on January 19th outside the US & Canada. The album was recorded in Nashville, produced by Mike Scott and mixed by the great Bob Clearmountain. Modern Blues is an electric, soulful, bold, freewheeling rock'n'roll record with a skinful of killer new songs, some of which have been premiered live over the past few years. Ralph Salmins, a mainstay on drums for the past four years, appears alongside the talismanic Steve Wickham, who weaves a dizzying fuzz fiddle spell on several tracks. Fresh to the ranks are Memphis keyboard player “Brother” Paul Brown and David Hood, legendary bassist from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Additional lead guitars are played by 2013 US Waterboy Jay Barclay and Austin soul guitarist Zach Ernst. Guest backing vocalists include southern soul legend Don Bryant. The album cover is a green man photograph titled The King Of Weeds, by New York artists Kahn and Selesnick. Modern Blues will be accompanied by a worldwide tour.

I saw these blokes in Sydney not long ago and they were bloody explosive. Its amazing how a band can change around a bit but if you keep the roots they still rock. This band has always been grand but has grown another leg. Top stuff boys - rip in !!!!

There are different things everyone likes about the Waterboys. This album was partly a return to the "Big Music" sound and "Long Strange Golden Road" is still one the of my all time favourites with "Destinies Entwined" being my second favourite of this specitic album. The later work is fine for me, although nothing was able to really catch me like those two songs.

Saw them live just last week for the first time since the mid-80s. I was luke warm on some of the new songs, until I saw them played live. LOVED every song. The band was incredible, and Scott's voice even more suitable to the music than ever. Not a moment's drop in energy start to finish. Truly a phenomenal concert!!

Just saw the guys live last night and they performed about 3 or 4 songs from this album. They kick ass live still and are so tight and as a six piece they sound really full and pumpy. Go see them if you get the chance and give this a listen. And yes, they still play "Whole of the Moon" and "Fisherman's Blues".

I saw them last night in Hollywood. They definitely kicked ass though I thought Mike was surprisingly satisfactory at best. Everyone in the band supplied ample moments of magic while Mike did rock star kicks and posturing. No trademark howls that made your hair stand up. He just seemed to be trying to get through it and do a respectful job. That band played their hearts out and the music called for more than he was able to give...

Acoustribute Sorry he had a bad night. I just saw them in San Diego and the entire band was just incredible. Mike is so charismatic. So many other bands leave you feeling like you should have just stayed home. I've only seen the Waterboys/Mike Scott three times (1984, 1996, 2015). However, each show was worth the price of admission x 1000!!! Simply fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+ProbeOneMusic yes, could be trumpet and fiddle but the result to my ears plays like a keyboard sound that imo doesn't sound as my Boys sound. In concert I have noticed the guitar better does that job. :-)

I have to agree... The new album kind of sucks. He kind of comes across as a crusty old rocker kind of insincere if compared to previous releases. It pains me to use Mike Scott and conviction less in the same sentence but that seems like where he's at...

Given the strength of his work in the 80s, did he borrow from his future? It's hard to keep up the standard for an extended period of time. He reminds me a bit of Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull whose singing is nowhere near what it used to be.

I'm slightly disappointed by this, it's nearly there but just feels somewhat cold. I feel that the guitar needs a softer sound and the whole tone doesn't suit Mike Scott's voice. Its not bad, its just you can't help compare it to what they once were.

I must agree with Larry in regard to Mike Scotts vocals ... he can no longer hold a note , this has been the case going back to the horrible Weary Land album. His pronouncation sounds like he is telljng Halloween stories to small children . Boo bloody Hoo . The lyrics sound like random words pulled from a hat . I like the overall tune very much , and the band are bloody brilliant , the lyrics could be tolerated, if only , if only the great man could still actually 'sing' ...
@Acoustribute
@Acoustribute 9 жыл бұрын
I must agree seeing them live for the first time live the other night. I don't think I would of ever considered him a great singer but he seemed to be going through the motions vocally with an overemphasis on annunciation much like you suggested. Sounded strange at times especially since while the band soared he remained grounded reduced to rock posturing and thin conviction less annunciated vocals. He played pretty much the whole album which got old because there isn't much dynamics to the album there all mid to uptempo rockers. "I see Elvis" and "The closest thing to hip" we're head scratchingly bad reeking of a crusty old rocker waxing nostalgic for a bygone era. "Rosalind"(you married the wrong man) seemed like a vain attempt at convincing himself that he was still in love with a past flame that never convinced me it was sincere or vulnerable. I have to say the band pretty much carried him...

God...GOD - just awful, awful plodding 'rock' with hideously overblown lyrics and leaden production - to think that this was the band I travelled up and down the country to see live in 85/86, collecting and trading hundreds and hundreds of bootleg tapes (hate Scott's hiccupy, over-pronounced Scottish 'lilt' as well - goodness knows it never used to sound like it does) So I'm pretty sure that's it for me for now - he's lost absolutely everything that I loved about them, and "it ain't never coming back"...and I'll live with the memories of past glories.

Very sad to hear this.The only trouble is that i kind of agree.I REAALY REALLY want to like it and kind of do,althought i'm not sure if this is out of loyalty or not.I went to see them in Guildford last December and sort of liked it etc. I did prefer the old ^big music^ sound with Anthony Thistlewaite being more prominent rather than Mike being too loyal himself to Steve Wickham.The Waterboys/Mike Scott should be in the postion of being labelled one of Britains' greats,but instead are just another band that most people have never even heard of.Having said that i'll still probably go and see their next tour.

Mike Scott has had a number of miss-steps along the way, especially the brutal Book of Lightening album. However, this is really great, in my opinion. A very strong melody, with a hook you could hang your hat on. Great singing from Scott. A tune that rocks, with a crack band delivering the goods. What's not to love?

I have to agree also... Mike Scott turns to cock rock with lyrics straight out of the Status Quo guide to Cosmic Rock.... Where is the artist/band that gave us the magnificent Fisherman's Blues , The Whole Of The Moon and Universal Hall - this new material is beneath him and it's fucking sad.
