The creators and cast of The Way, a new BBC drama, visit the BFI Southbank to talk about the show.
Created by Michael Sheen, James Graham and Adam Curtis, The Way taps into the social and political chaos of today’s world by imagining a civil uprising that begins in a small industrial town. With wit and heartfelt emotion, this ambitious drama tells the story of an ordinary family, the Driscolls, caught up in an extraordinary chain of events. Fleeing unrest, the Driscolls are forced to escape their country and the certainties of their old lives.
All episodes of The Way are available now on BBC iPlayer.

Thanks for posting this! It's very interesting to hear Sheen and others' perspectives on the making of. I really enjoyed the series, it was nice to see an artistic project and not a commercial product for once. In this sense, I don't know if it's courage or inexplicable faith in humanity on his part, but kudos to Sheen for not simplifying his work into a version for dummies, even if people nowadays seem to have zero capacity for abstraction and the attention span of a stoned ferret!

I loved The Way, the layers of the story, and the varying scale, and the documentary feel about it. Forgot to breathe sometimes. An amazing work of an amazing team.

I went to London from Devon for the screening and Q&A. I'm one of the many Good Omens' fangirls Michael has - and I'm actually 12 years older than him. Love lots of other things he's done as well. His audiobook reading of 'Dust' by Phillip Pullman is brilliant. No idea how he did it but the voices, all the accents are amazing. Now I love 'The Way'. Getting ready to watch it all the way through for the second time. Lots of layers of meaning, of relevance, of relationships. Also going to visit Port Talbot in a few months when I'm in Wales. I want to see the locations used for this and for the Passion Play Michael did there a while back. And take a picture of that mural of him....

Thank you for uploading this. I really enjoyed The Way, it speaks to how well it fits into the current Zeitgeist, if you will, that they kept writing things that were almost prophetic.

Really interesting to see people's views on here as mainstream press seem to be saying that it is very unsophisticated. Might give it a watch now. ❤️

The Way slips into the ouvre of Utopia - a representation of the chained discomfort of modern society. It's an unusual watch because reflecting on the world is an unusual watch. artistically its spot on and great to be offered in a medium that's accessible to the common person.

I think 'My Way' was bold, quite unique and with hints of 80s creative outputs like John Carpenter's They Live, or even the BBC's 'Threads'. The look and feel for sure. It doesn't quite pull it off though and may have been better as either a film or an Adam Curtis one-off fantasy/fake documentary. Here, Curtis' involvement in My Way reminds me of when the great Tony Kaye (Dunlop Venus in Furs advert etc etc) first ventured into motion pictures with 'American History X' ie. stick to what you're really really good at.

The dystopian future’s already here for a lot of people. Martin Sheen’s involvement in this is encouraging though and look forward to watching it.

It's a great series! I've already binge-watched it and can recommend it to anyone. But his name is Michael and he's not related to Martin. Or Charlie.

Adam HAD a good idea of what was going on. As often happens, when you get old, you lose perspective. The radical right and radical left have to fail -- otherwise we have disaster.

adam has only ever shone a light on the strangeness of a public that believe change is necessary but are unable to achieve it. perhaps you should reflect on your position, as a moderate, and whether youve just bought into the status quo, and that is why you now disagree with adam's commentary on the failure of change. maybe you've just given up. its easier to just let the establishment win, isnt it? perhaps your story is exactly what adam thinks is odd.

Its just so unfair in a way that actor's get to direct their first or 2nd TV series without any directing experience, when there is a hell of a lot of directors out of work right now since the strikes of 2023. I like Michael Sheen though.

He's just too humble, it was his idea, his project, without him there would have been no series to direct. Furthermore, even though it was his first TV series, he has already directed several theater projects, in addition to having a lifetime of experience in the sector. His direction is the best thing in the series, along with the performances of the actors, who he probably chose

@@lilylila3144 I know he directed a few things. Maybe not in Michael's case, but there are plenty of other actor turned directors who have no experience in directing.

@@Filmmaker809Well if you never start, never gain experience! There are actors who have become fantastic directors, like Clint Eastwood. Recently, in Italy, the actress and comedian Paola Cortellesi achieved an incredible success with her directorial debut, surpassing even big Hollywood movies such as Barbie and Oppenheimer. And again, this was his project, he wasn't just randomly appointed director
