Mark Twain was a master of such word usage. He had an ear for how the language was spoken, for better or worse, and employed "casual English" quite often.

Interesting video! I remember when I was back in school we got whipped emotionally using the word ain't. As a non-native English speaker I was amazed since you did hear the word in many films, video games and such. They did not bother to tell people that before writing an essay. In Finland they focus too much on the grammar to my money. In addition, merry X-mas to you all!

@@ArizonaGhostridersYou are welcome! The tearchers may have not whipped us but they did evaluate the skill in grammar mostly. That's why many grade A students could not pronounce English 😂 I learned the language by playing video games and watching Western movies.

I had no idea how to research for a western story I'm currently writing, with my main inspiration being, of course, Red Dead, and I didn't want to use that as my main source of information. This channel makes it easy for me to get bite sized chunks that inspire me to look further into certain topics, and have gotten me to pay more attention to the little details in my story that I would've otherwise glossed over :)

@@alvinsanchez967 When I was a youngster, Shirley Temple (Black), was a common sight for my siblings and I especially, on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Her curls never seemed to loose their bounce no matter how much she danced and ran around. I know, there were Hairdressers to look after her.

I appreciated your reference to Roughing It. The foundations of American slang were laid early on, predating even the rise of the jive talk introduced by the jazz culture of New Orleans, which was an early, but not primary, contribution. The California Gold Rush era gave rise to, or pushed forward and solidified, many colloquialisms that persist today. It is surprising how common and familiar many of them are. The Roughing It chapter "Buck Fanshaw's Funeral" is a treasure trove of them. Today, additional layers are accruing that have emerged from geek speak and hip hop. We might hope that those contributions will lack the longevity of adoptions made during earlier periods of American history.

@@ArizonaGhostriders Let's talk about Pilgrim and Cavalier hats, their direct connection to the rise of the piloncillo sombrero in colonial Mexico, and its direct connection to the Tom Mix style of hat favored by it's accidental namesake, Tim McCoy (real hero), and Elmer Keith. It is a style unparalleled--- unexceeded. I have been wearing them since the early 1970s, and currently have two--- one in 1920s style, the other appropriate for 19th Century wear. "The Boss of The Plains" was a piece of crap. Those hats you gentlemen are wearing are insufficient to protect from the Arizona sun.

I recommend your channel to my friends who always make fun of my love for history and the old west. Came in the other day and they were watching the one where u interviewed the performers and they were like “man we should go check this stuff out ” lol oh how the tables have turned. Thank you for these awesome videos. My g-g-grandfather went to America as a young man. He left Ireland and wrote home saying he’s never met so many Irish people out of his own green isle. Same with our Scot cousins I believe. We have no idea of his exploits. He returned minus part of one ear and a chunk out of his jaw as well as some old photos we still have. Spent the rest of his days in Ireland. America it seems, was not for him. I’d have loved to have gone with and seen the sights..and probably die though

@@ArizonaGhostriders certainly are! I grew up on my grandads farm and they didn’t spare the work. It’s helped with living history though as you kind of have a vague idea of what ranch life may have felt like. We still have his watch - it’s rather fun because it’s a patent lever watch itself but the case is silver from Birmingham. Thanks again for these videos, they’re really fun to watch and very informative.

My third grade teacher used to tell us no to use "ain't" be it's not a word. She stop when I raised my hand and said, "So what you're saying is that ain't ain't a word. So we ain't supposed to use it?" One of the many times I walked home because she sent me out into the hallway, lol.

After watching "True Grit" I had assumed that contractions didn't--I mean, did not--come west of the Mississippi until around 1900. I still enjoy hearing the more florid and courtly manner of speech used in old-west dialogue. It gives an audible degree of separation from our modern times. By the way, did you notice that when Ken Curtis was in "The Horse Soldiers" he had none of his later Festus accent?

I remember my first grade teacher riding everyone with ain't fell in the bucket of paint so we don't use it. Well that was over 50 years ago. Later in high school I tried to point out that it was a proper English contraction to no avail.
