For the best part of two decades, there was hardly a more recognisable name in European hill climbing than Georg Plasa. He essentially defined the entire sport on the continent and dedicated his life not just to promoting his own programme, but to raising the profile of the sport as a whole. Georg Plasa lived for hill climb and was someone who never thought just of his own team or of himself as a driver. Much more he stood up for the interests and needs of the hill climb sports community. In addition, Georg was a real pioneer in motorsport and especially for the down-to-earth hill climb racing. Klaus Wohlfarth decided to keep Georg’s old 320 as a motorsports memory and to rebuild it, so that his memory would not fade away after his death. He was worried that someone would use Georg’s former BMW 320 Judd V8 only as a parts donor. A full restoration was concluded in the months leading up to Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018. KW’s engineering department moved earth in order for the project to be completed in time, with many individuals gladly donating their evenings and weekends to the project, and the team’s own apprentices pulling double shifts in their own free time. In the UK, the BMW caused a surprise. With a time of 46.43 seconds, the old three-wheeler BMW was the fastest vehicle with a conventional internal combustion engine and had only the electric racing car Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak (43.86 seconds) and the electric sports car NIO EP9 (44.32 seconds) beaten in the "Shootout Final".
Für fast zwei Jahrzehnte gab es in der europäischen Bergrennen-Szene kaum einen bekannteren Namen als Georg Plasa. Georg Plasa lebte für den Bergrennsport und war jemand, der nie nur an sein Team oder an sich als Fahrer dachte. Viel mehr setzte er sich für die Belange und Nöte der Bergsport-Community ein. Daneben war Georg ein echter Pionier für den Motorsport und im speziellen für den Bergrennsport. Wenn Euch Georg Plasas Name geläufig ist, wisst ihr, das Georg 2011 bei einem Bergrennen mit seinem BMW 134 JUDD tödlich verunglückte. Klaus Wohlfarth, Gründer und Geschäftsführer von KW automotive, war ein enger Freund von Georg und still und leise kaufte Klaus Wohlfarth den BMW und “versteckte” ihn in den “Heiligen KW Hallen”. 2017 reifte dann die Idee, Georgs BMW wieder ans Tageslicht zu bringen, schließlich war und ist dieser BMW weit mehr als nur besonders.
In den Monaten vor dem Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 wurde der nicht fahrbereite BMW wieder aufgebaut. Zahlreiche KW Mitarbeiter setzten in ihrer Freizeit alles in Bewegung, um Georg Plasas BMW rennfertig zu machen. In Großbritannien sorgte der BMW für eine Überraschung. Mit einer Zeit von 46,43 Sekunden war der alte Dreier BMW das schnellste Fahrzeug mit herkömmlichem Verbrennungsmotor und musste sich nur den Elektro-Rennwagen Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak (43,86 Sekunden) und dem Elektro-Sportwagen NIO EP9 (44,32 Sekunden) im „Shootout-Finale“ geschlagen geben. Never forget!
