Just found this video by accident and suddenly it was 1962 all over again. I went to Mesa High and we would surf Dana Point (Before the breakwater that ruined it) and about once a month we got crazy and hit the Wedge. We never used surfboards (couldn't afford to!) so we just bellyboarded it. We called it Body Womping! I can't believe we actually did it. Rarely saw anybody besides us crazies.

Much respect from Australia bro. Definitely on the wish list to come over and watch it live.

Was out surfing one day and dove headfirst into a sand bar. I can tell you… when you have no feeling in your neck for several hours… it is the worst feeling. You dread the worst. Luckily nothing serious happened. All sensations returned. But it taught me.. that ending up paralyzed or even in a wheelchair… can happen in seconds. Will NEVER put myself in a situation like this again.

I was a Newport boy once upon a time for a summer in 1977. I live on an island off another coast now. I used to jog down to the Wedge to check out the action. Even got into the water there a few times and yes I ate a lot of sand. Probably can’t do it now… kinda old for that. However I still enjoy watching folks take on this unique break. I can’t believe how casually some of these dudes just smile and drop their ruined boards on the sand. Used to be when your board got eaten by some angry wave you were at least a little sad bcoz there went several hundred dollars… Of course this is Newport - these guys probably have beaucoup dinero and six other boards in the garage back at the casa.

Very cool video! When I was young I bodysurfed just up the coast in playa del Rey and there is absolutely no way I would have taken off on waves like this! very dangerous indeed. I might consider boogie boarding at the wedge but bodysurfing and board surfing is crazy in my humble opinion.
