After numerous revisits, this Weeknd album just isn't sitting well with me. Though I'm all for any efforts the artists of today make to change the R&B landscape, the lyricism on this LP sticks up like an unwelcome weed.
Imagine this album as an indie film, and you've been given a free ticket. Considering the fact you paid no money, the picture quality, sets, costumes, and camerawork are all quite good. Loos pretty hi-production! Maybe it'll be promising.
But then the lead actor walks into frame, and it becomes painfully clear things are going downhill. His mannerisms are awkward, his phrasing is generic, and he wasn't given the best of lines.
He's kind of like a younger, more risk-taking version of Johnny in Tommy Wiseau's the Room. He's nobody to sympathize with. His emotions are legitimate--even if they are a little overly dramatic--but he lacks the ability to express himself in a remotely captivating way.
I usually do my best to avoid people like this, not listen to them sing about their self-created "problems."
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next?

Because there was a Canadian music band called "The Weekend" Because of that, he trademarked the name The Weeknd, as the letter e was removed to avoid copyright marks against him.

No one cares about your opinion. The non-trilogy version is so fucking bad. Edit: I've changed my mind drasically, I think this is one of the best R&B projects of this decade. I listened to Wicked Games and thought the mixing was shit, so I just commented a bunch of bullshit because of it. Sorry.

Jamie Constable the music and sound is just one part tho. If you don’t like the character and story, the songs can come off quite boring. That’s why he didn’t enjoy it, he didn’t care for the Abel was saying and I can understand that. To me this album is an 8 but I can see why he wouldn’t like it if he didn’t sympathize with the lyrics. That is an important part of the music after all

I agree that "the character" is annoying, I don't usually like The Weeknd's lyrics, but to base pretty much all the review on the lyrics alone is stupid, he doesn't even talk much about the instrumentals, while in other reviews he talks about it track by track. He's entitled by his opinion, but based on what he's saying here, a 3/10 makes no sense. Also his lyrics haven't changed that much even in After Hours, and he still using autotune, and Anthony gave that album a 7/10, but he probably won't ever admit the mistake he did in this review.

Well, its not like he didn't talk about it all. A reviewer, when making a shorter 5-10 minute review, will likely only talk about the things he or she actually has some thought in. He apparently had more to say on the story, and the story really ruined everything for him.

Reptile estrin well the issue is that Anthony doesn't get it. We aren't supposed to sympathize with him, he is the bad guy in almost every song. That or it's just a party/sex song. The only time we would is on The Knowing which is absolutely beautiful and Coming Down. Well, maybe on Wicked Games but I've never enjoyed that song. Like a lot of Anthony's arguments "he thinks with his wang most of the time" yes, that's the point. That's the character The Weeknd is portraying. The thing about Anthony's opinion is he's so biased about the character he doesn't give a proper review. It's the same reason MBDTF got a bad review. Because of Anthony's bias to the character. If Anthony listened and reviewed both albums NOW, the reviews would be much different as he's grown as a reviewer. He now tends to leave his biases at the door and reviews it looking at all angles. He now sees who the album is made for and reviews mostly based off that with his opinion still in play. But back in 2011, his reviews were sometimes shit.

I really love House of Balloons, but I don’t think it’s flawless. What You Need is kind of a boring track, and GTG doesn’t have the best verses and drags on a bit too long. The lyricism is occasionally bland or lacking. I think HOB is a flawed masterpiece

I really don't think someone with maybe a few dozen views can talk any shit to anyone. he seems to be a bit more favourable now on this project, especially on the remastered trilogy version. he prefers the production now, but he's still ambivalent towards the lyrics. you can check his kiss land review for his opinion on it now.

Watching the review of this album and seeing why he gave it a three -Didn’t like auto tune -Production is mediocre (I think that’s what he said.. was kind of vague) -Doesn’t like lyrics because he doesn’t like the character singing it (not because the lyrics are bad) That’s it. I love fantano but this is one of his most close-minded reviews. His main reason for not liking the album was because he doesn’t like the character singing it. The album is a masterclass in telling what a life of drugs, partying, and sex can do to you. It’s fun in the moment, sure, but after the fun is deep regret. Would really like to see a re review of this because I hope he does come back to this album. Edit: He put trilogy (an album with the songs from HOB on it) on his top 100 albums of the decade, so maybe he has come around on the album. If he has would still like to see a re-review on it.

I could not disagree with u more about this mixtape, I absolutely love it. It was about time indie artists started experimenting with R&B, this was a leap in the right direction. Yes there could have been more depth to the lyrics and subject matter but there doesn't have to be. 8/10

Bart van Maanen I just liked the songs, the concept, and the overall feel of Kiss Land a lot more. It was very weighty and cinematic, which I'm a real sucker for when it comes to music. I didn't feel like BBTM captured the same essence of Kiss Land, which, it wasn't meant to obviously. But still the album was more pop-orientated, which isn't exactly my cup of tea, but there were still a lot of songs I loved from it. Overall though, Kiss Land was the album that had more for me to appreciate about it. How come you like BBTM more?

I think Fantano was too consumed by the lyrical context on this tape rather than the execution/production and overall vocally excellent performance by The Weeknd. Definitely would love to hear a re-review of this because I don't think it deserves a 3. I'm no fan of The Weeknd after Trilogy, but this is honestly one of the best projects I've ever listened to and I'm not R&B fanatic either.

i don't think anybody will anybody will ever understand the weeknd. even off of a mixtape or all of them, you can't say a full truthful conclusion about him. he barely speaks to social media because he wants to focus on his music, not his public image. also, they don't realize his lyrics. how dark and violent he really is. i don't see where him being a tool comes from honestly, there's much more deeper meaning in his songs than just sex and drugs. he's making kind of a story about that we'll have to find out through his later mixtapes/albums

+xJoBoy To me Anthony barely talks about anything wrong with the album and concentrated on talking about something minute like the 'character of the album.' The only other thing he criticises is the 'autotune' which aside form the ending of one track there is none.

I've been listening to this for the past week non-stop. This is definitely a step forward for the genre, I agree that the lyrics sometimes sound hurried and shallow but the vocals and the mood the music creates is amazing. I really don't think we're supposed to sympathies with this character, at all. Good review!

He could've seen The Weeknd as a band or singer and producer combo. Like if you listened to a Maroon 5 song without knowing who they were you wouldn't recognize it as a band but rather only Adam Levine. And come on how often do artists call themselves "The ___"? It's understandable how he could make the mistake.

I keep coming back to remind myself of how much of a low point this review is in Melon's career as a music reviewer. The first time I saw the review I was blinded by the fact he gave it a 3/10 when most people have it between a personal 8-10/10, so that didn't allow me to realize he criticized the album for showing its subject matters in the way it did. Anthony had no idea that was actually Abel's life and as such, he couldn't appreciate Abel being blatantly honest and putting that side of his life in HOB. Not to mention that his lifestyle is something many people are really far from relating to, which may have been an important factor for Anthony's point of view. It's so hard to relate to his lifestyle that in Kiss Land he sings the line: "This ain't nothing to relate to"

Bruh Im pretty sure the lyrics for coming down won't fit for a geordie shore character. The melody for the knowing is one of the most beautiful things you will ever hear in your life. The production on house of balloons (song) is mind blowing and tbh the production is excellent on every single song. The weeknds voice is so capable it's awe -inspiring on tracks like the knowing and the morning. It really is an outstanding album. He really was another level it's maaad especially for his first album. And tbh fantano you kinda fucked up by not mentioning the production on this album it really is pristine. The opening synths on the morning with the blues guitar are exquisitely produced and come on that opening on the knowing.

Like you said even though you don't enjoy it, we possibly do. House of Balloons is one of my favorite Album/Mixtape from the Weeknd. And I love it more when he cleaned up the songs for the remaster on Trilogy.

I agree the lyrics are trash, but that criticism alone shouldn't hold much weight. People LOVE Paul McCartney, but how many beatles' songs are about "oh girl! hey girl!" with zero lyrical depth? The vocals and atmosphere on this album make it for me. My favorite Tom Waits album is Nighthawks at the Diner; it's nowhere near his lyrical best, but its atmosphere is solid.

Come on people, the guy has his own opinion. It is childish to come on here and do nothing but complain because he has a different taste in music than you or a different view on a certain album. He got a lot of requests for the review and knew that a lot of people liked house of balloons, but still had the balls to come out with his own honest review of what he thought of the album, and I respect him for that.
