My theory is that most modern singers and rappers have negative charisma, because they dont need it to do music. Also, once you have money and fame, you dont need charisma to have people want to be around you.

One of his biggest problems in this show is his eye movements, especially when he’s saying something that’s supposed to be condescending or badass or whatever. If you pay attention to his eyes during these times, he always tends to look away or to the side which conveys insecurity/uncertainty in what one is saying/thinking, which totally goes against the type of character he’s trying SO HARD to portray.

What Abel needs to understand is that "sexy and mysterious" doesn't always walk hand-in-hand with "intimidating." You can sometimes be both, but not always. And although he could have pulled off a sexy and mysterious character given his music persona, someone really needed to tell him that he doesn't have the right physique or voice for menace. In the hands of a more appropriate actor, SOME of this dialogue could have worked better. Someone like J. K. Simmons could pull off a few of these phrases pretty well. But Abel just doesn't have the right stuff for this kind of role. Classic example of someone making it big in one sector of the entertainment industry thinking all his talents can automatically translate to a different sector of the industry. Let this be a lesson to people to KNOW YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

I was thinking the same thing: horrible writing! His character had to be the flattest, worst stereotypical bs role I've ever seen, and in an HBO show????? HBO usually has far better standards for writing than this. The writing team just didn't get into the head of this character at all and it was horrible to watch. I feel like this is part of why the horrible assault scenes are even cringier to watch. They could have even gone more of a 50 Shades direction with those (which ironically, The Weeknd already has some attachment to already), and that would have even been better than whatever came out of this crappy script. I don't think The Weeknd could have saved this garbage fire even if he tried harder. This series definitely made him look like a horrible actor but people also need to think of how they wanted to see this performed because, if they did, they'd realize there's literally NOWHEREEE for this character to go that would have been reasonable or ideal. It's crap writing.
