And they’re stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. And while you’re stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however, you want to make it feel, but that’s what ‘The Dawn’ is for me.”

This MV shows the industry is taking his youthful essence, his sound, and leaving him damaged and aged. They chain him to the microphone stand to perform at command, he is in service to the industry ritual. His sound is represented by the colours when he is singing chorus. The energy is transferred. The industry (red lady) is revitalised by the new sound (ala whenever Weeknd releases a new album) but it leaves The Weeknd spent. I imagine the next MV we will see the old man Weeknd.

I think the video has a double meaning and a parallelism between his fans and a partner. I think he can feel pressured to release music and dark song by his fans because that's what a lot of them want from him, but maybe he isn't in that state of mind anymore, and if he tries to do it he feels down or uninspired. That's why he is chained to the mic and his hands burn when he sings. So in that way he explains that he doesn't want to sacrifice himself, and the people of the cult represent his fans, dragging him to do what they want. And also, the red woman I think symbolises a partner, but when he commits to her he feels like he is sacrificing his time, maybe because the relationship is going to end eventually so he feels like it's a waste of time, or because he wants to go out and be with other women and enjoy the night (as it's said in the song).

Sacrifice is one of my favorite songs from the album and probably my most favorite song on the album so far. The production quality on this track is insane which isn't surprising with heavy hitters such as Swedish House Maffia producing. The music video is again amazing and I really enjoy the fact that Abel is keeping the theme of storytelling going. That was one of the major plus point about After Hours and it's music videos.

I read a book in ninth grade(with an audiobook) called feed by M.T, That Takes place in the future. Listening to this album reminds me of how the ads were being played by a chip that was inserted into peoples head. The weeknd going to the afterlife and listening to these radios/ads in his head just reminded me a lot of that book.

Lust. Lust bent his mind, seduced him into those chained gauntlets. And when he finally broke free of his own power, he lost his light and his youth. Only then does he realize the true figure behind the Lust that twisted him, and that he traded a moment in time for it all - for which Lust laughs at him. In the song, he says sacrifice twice with two different intents. He doesn't want to sacrifice for love, but he doesn't want to sacrifice love either. In the end, he does anyway - he sacrificed what he loved for what he loved most - a self-consuming circle. The set of the video is circular for a reason. It's a cycle he's put himself in, leaving him unable to fight Lust. Lust does not take his soul - he actually gives it up himself.
