I love mixed media! Right now mixing gouache and watercolour is my favourite. I’m loving pastel watercolours personally. Also you can buy empty half pans and mixer colours and use a wire and pr-mix your own convenience colours! I have over 100 total convenience colours mixed now (including both watercolour and gouache in many pallets. I open them up spread them around me pre wet and paint. I paint at least three times as fast and twice as often! It’s really extremely helpful to me. I invest time in researching pigments. Colours and mixing then take notes do experiments: then mix new convince colours. I’ve been investing in tubes of the most inspiring colours (right from the tube), best for mixing. And as I go doing more. I keep notes about mixing to help repeat successful colours. Colours can even fairy by brand so I continue to expand my collection and knowledge. I also have techniques to use many papers excellently including cheap ‘incorrect’ papers. No such thing as cheating! First time I’d seen gesso used this way, interesting, thanks!

Soooo I make many appearances in this video, lol! So my camera angles were just off enough to capture the top of my head/side of my face as I worked, womp, womp! And so instead of delaying and refilming I figured you might not be too mad about it? XO Hope you love this one!

Here's my thing. The deliberate dumbing dumb of society is offensive to me. It should be offensive to everyone. Just because today's artists can't achieve what those of "yester-years" achieved doesn't give them the right to change the rules. I do take offense to someone calling themselves an artist then they trace. I do take offense to a painter calling themselves a watercolor artist then they use white. That isn't a watercolor artist. It's a mixed media artist and there is absolutely zero shame in that. So why don't they just say they are mixed media artists? Calling oneself a watercolor artist when they use pens, inks, white, gouache, etc is equivalent to today's baseball players comparing themselves to Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Mickie and Lou. They aren't. Today's athletes do nothing but athletes. They train, take drugs, work out, etc. Yesterday's "athletes" worked a job. They played baseball on the side. They didn't work out, they didn't train, they didn't take steroids they didn't cork their bats and they still set records held even today. We don't change the rules on the middle of the game. Hence why watercolor is the hardest to learn and achieve. Let's stop calling tracers artists. Let's stop calling mixed media artists watercolorists. They aren't. They are mixed media artists whom use watercolor too; and by God there is no shame in that. The only people putting shame on it are the ones claiming to be watercolor artists when they aren't. They should be proud enough of their own individual achievement to call themselves what they are.

I have always wanted to learn to use watercolors but was “stuck” thinking it was too hard. I found you on KZfaq and bought 1 of your books. “How to Make Art for Joy’s Sake” . Great instructional book! I also bought a dagger brush and I love it! I am beginning to feel more confident in my watercolor efforts thanks to you.

Thank you so much! I graduated from college more than 40 years ago. I’ve decided to try one of my favorite mediums again. A teacher destroyed any confidence I had. I have learned so much from you in the last few days. After watching about paint, and then searching, I saw the pastel paint and thought, oh no! I can’t do that… until it started running around in my head. Now I think I would love it. Time to throw out the old rules! Thank you! I think I have all the supplies figured out. Excited to start!

Love the colors although I'm more of a bright color person. I love mixing different paints, colored pencil, pen, inks, and gels all in one piece. I'm definitely not a purist when it comes to creating art. I am so inspired by your energy and you style.

Oooh... Loving those pastel watercolours! I'm addicted to colour, and I'm the sort of person who will buy more paint or products because I like the colour, even if I don't need any! Looking at your palette, I had the joy of seeing a display of Ateliers acrylic pastels today.... I so needed them! But I'm not currently painting in pastels. But I really NEED them.... I guess I'm back to the artshop to buy the pastels, because after seeing this video, I really need them for my art class tomorrow! Loved this video, especially the variations in the leaves... they are so much more like my native Australian plants. I love that you paint so many eucalypts! ❤️

I love that you're a champion for convenience colors. Others always say to just mix colors, but No, I rather have pre mixed. I hate mixing and can never replicate the color, if I need to make more. I also waste so much paint, trying to get the right color. I'd rather have a large selection and he covered for whatever situation I find myself in.

I keep coming back to this exquisite painting- & I keep trying to understand why I'm mesmerized by it. And it finally occurred to me...it is everything you teach ...the basic shapes you create for florals, the direction seems to flow & such a wild array of colors- yet tastefully under control This is stunning because in some ways it breaks all the rules ... I think maybe that's whats so exciting about it!! It breaks all the rules why creating something unique - bringing potential chaos under control & redirecting it to another focal point .(Sort of like a magician who directs your eye one moment while creating the magic to be revealed in the next. Ta da! 😄 Thank you Kristy for sharing w/ us your own special magic. ❤

I think there is on such thing as cheating in art. As long as you dont steal someone else's art you do you I'm new to watercolors and still trying to figure out "What, How," but I'll get it and if not I'll find another way to get the results I'm looking for. 'Today we're going to cheat... and I'm proud of it!' 😂 I love it. Personally I enjoy mixing colours and the fact I'm never going to get that particular mix twice, so I need to let go of my inner control freak (which I used to find hard!), but I also like a colour that's ready to go when I'm not on an experimental mood. 😊 The black bits in the center of your flower are the pistils, filament and anthers. 😊

I have been stuck in the water color tutorial trap. I can’t seem to paint a thing unless it’s a tutorial. I’ve gotten so frustrated. I think I’ve looked at 199 videos and I’m not making any progress forward. My watercolor at first increased my dopamine but now is making me sad ☹️. And THEN this weekend I discovered you Kristy! I’m excited!!. What to paint when I don’t know what to paint? I have hoarded so many art supplies that I’ve not mastered and I can use them? I have ordered 2 books I’m so looking forward to getting later this week. Your whole approach and spirit is so refreshing! It’s 12:30 am and I’m considering calling in sick tomorrow to binge watch and paint with you. Thank you so much. I wish you were my best friend. P. S. I get nothing on Amazon when I click on buying your brushes. Nothing shows up to say sold out? No brushes of yours shows up. I certainly don’t NEED them but you know…. One can never have too many brushes and you’re using ones I normally don’t- I want to learn how to use something besides a round. ❤️

Wow, I just found your channel and am completely obsessed! I'm def. a fan of your art style; it's just luscious. I'm not any kind of painter really -- although I do own both paints and brushes (lol); instead, I come from a stained glass background (20 yrs) and more recently, card-making (1 yr). The former discipline has some fairly strict rules (as you can imagine lol), the latter, not so much. When I saw you painting, and heard your voice-over, I knew I'd love to learn from you right away. You handle all the fearful bits with ease, which helps my level of stress when learning something so out of my comfort zone. So, I caught the bug almost immediately and just went to your site and bought the 1/4 dagger. Thank you so much for offering people your knowledge (and infectious enthusiasm) here on youtube! I started this journey last year inspired by favorite pbn projects which my family also got into . Then this led to trying some things on my own but more influenced by the purest artist more or less. I have produced ...for a beginner...some surprising things by copying photos and learning a lot. I never really thought about so many art terms before in my life lol I'm 51. What I am noticing about my own art passion is that I started to give myself rules when or guilt for no real reason with little stuff. Like...using gouache for extra cloud or wave highlights because it's not a pure way. Okay this for me is super stressing because my goal is to have fun and create something that looks good to me. I'm not intending to be professional lol I'm already a professional in other areas. So love finding your channel because I was starting to not give myself permission to enjoy many medias of painting. I might take a drawing class to give some skill but geez also kept myself from tracing simply because your "not supposed to". Keep up the amazing work and thank you for your honestly. I think you help many of us that are randomly looking at KZfaq and just want to enjoy this and not necessarily make it into a profession. Not saying one can't with your methods...because you produce amazing stuff but think you know what I mean :) Happy painting!

I add my pigment info on the side… it can be useful later! Also, i prefer using sakura microperm pens now… they are “permanent on most surfaces” and seem to stay on better than sharpie. Plus come in nice sizes, very very thin, and you can use them on ANY SURFACE… even surfaces that sharpies won’t work well on. Try them!

You painted it so beautifully. Love your tips. Are those paints expensive? The pen you mentioned, is it the same as Sakura micro pens? The gesso… that’s remarkable. Will be on my list. Thank you

I believe the set was around $45. Pen is very similar to the micro!

I have the White Nights pastel colors but I'm never using them. Maybe I can find a way to mix them with my other colors for added interest, but no, not buying any more pastel colors.

That’s not cheating. Rules be damned. Too many rules stifles creativity. Rules are for competitions. When creating just to create, do whatever you want.

I am a whatever works for the piece type of guy. I am a nautical type and love all things to do with the sea. I have done some statues and monuments also a couple of landscapes. I use some transparent paints from koi that works well for some of my pieces

@@KristyRice I use gouache on mixed media paper I love it. I lift it like watercolor and it can be just as transparent. I also have used inks and ink tense pencils whatever it takes to make the painting pop and come alive

Well, color me stupid. I never understood why there were water colors in tubes. I had no idea that you put it in pans. I once asked a man who was painting at a park & he was squirting little daubs on his pallet. It just seemed so wasteful to me. Now I know & it makes much more sense.

Loved the pastel colors, but I couldn't find them to purchase them anywhere. Every place I found them was sold out. :( You use a lot of holbein; do you find that there are similar colors in their lineup with these (i.e. shell pink, brilliant pink, to name the two that I have)? The idea of on-demand opaque pastels is very appealing. :)

What about the little magnet?! People want to know!! Where do you get them? That is ingenious. I was using the sticky magnet strips cut into small pieces and placed on the bottom-not ideal. I love the idea of the little magnets inside the paint.
