The 1500s was a transitional period, where Europe moved from a medieval to a modern society. We saw the centralisation and foundations of modern states, the birth of capitalism, and various philosophical concepts such as humanism. There were also major technological efforts which rapidly changed society. The printing press allowed for a mass production of books. But ofcourse, books are boring, and epic military history is fun - people thought the same in the 1500s, which saw a great deal of military innovations.
But transitional periods are hardly stable. A lot of experimentation has to be done before stabilization occurs and something reliable is settled upon. This meant that there were a lot of weird weapons in the 1500s, ranging from a sort of tank, to the dreaded mushroom gun. Ofcourse, in this video, I'll only really be touching on weaponry from Renaissance Sweden, since that's where I got the most knowledge. But don't worry, we had a lot of weird weaponry, and some were used abroad as well. I will additionally include a few from England towards the end.

There were plenty of rifled barrel rifles after the 1500s, they were more difficult to load but some people appreciated their accuracy.

Hello! This should definitely have more views, I feel like finding a treasure in some silent part of the youtube. I enjoyed the standard of research and editing that went to this (images and such, animation with crossbow etc. were well selected), and I hope you keep on the good work.

And as a finnish person, the club part was interesting. And actually I haven't heard of the nuijasota -clubs as distinctive weapons. Our common history with Sweden is shamefully too much neglected in our school history lessons and as I have later delved into that history, I feel almost cheated by this fact. Many centuries of cultural darkness that needn't be.

The main reason rifles were not popular for battlefield use before the mid 19th century was not the difficulty in manufacturing them, but the difficulty in loading them. The invention of the Minie ball meant a rifle could be muzzle loaded without a wadding, since the shot expands to articulate with the grooves the rifle, and made rifles practical for mass issue. The extra 75m or so range from earlier rifled muskets did not compensate for the 1-2 shot per minute firing rate, which was at a great disadvantage against troops firing 3-5 shots per minute with smoothbore muskets. Formations of men are area targets, and effective fire can be brought well out of accurate point target range.

12:45 Wagon forts are underrated and underrepresented, not only were they used by Czechs but also Germans, Scandinavians, Hungarians, Russians, Ottomans, Safavids, they even made their way to India!

As advanced as modern weapons are, humans are still throwing rock at one another. Sometimes those rocks are dropped, sometimes the rock explode. How the Rick getting to the target. How the Rick Acts from moment to moment is all very complicated but it's still throwing rocks. And humanity is extremely good at it.

dangit. i have been trying to look up the long pipe guns after seeing this video but i can't find squat! anyone here knows where i can find more info? yes, i am commenting way after this video went up.

Can't find anything except for a mention by Vasa (same as in the video). There are several long smoothbore rifles in collections, such as in Skokloster Slott in Sweden and I've seen dutch examples at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. They are just very big rifles and were apparently a bit more accurate because of their long barrels. There were also wall guns that were kinda like carried swivel guns and they could be massive, but not good for sharpshooting.
