I love sea shanties, chill-but-energetic genre, they're honestly catchy. I'm also happy we can take those songs and make our own, I think the guys that wrote the song learned proper sea shanties and then wrote one this one themselves.

These songs were sung for hours and hours at a time to keep sailor's working at a steady even pace for generations so maybe it's something like how a fear of spiders was baked into us maybe since these songs were sung for so long and so often and they helped our ancestors survive it could have been baked into us

The Weller Bros. was a Sydney Australia shore-whaling company that operated primarily along the southern coast of New Zealand from 1830 to 1840. Though they had numerous vessels in their employ, none appear to have been named the Billy o' Tea. Anyone under the employ of the Weller Bros. were referred to as a Wellerman, but in the specific context of the song the Wellerman takes on the meaning of a supply ship sent by the company. A Billy is slang for a makeshift kettle used for boiling water to make tea. Tonguing refers to the tonguers, the part of a shore whaling team responsible for butchering the whale after it had been caught. "tonguing" being the process of butchering the whale carcass into tongue shaped strips which consisted of the skin, flesh and blubber. And these "tongues" were boiled in huge pots to extract oil from whale blubber/fat since you can't fit an entire whale in a boiling pot!! One piece of information that I couldn't find was how to stop listening to this on loop. Also, if y'all got hyped about whaling, do watch the movie, "In the Heart of the Sea". (Not related to Wellermen though)

I have to say, I was substitute teaching an elementary music class where there was a writeup on KZfaq music videos of songs and genres... Someone put this song into the list.... Showing this video to a class of kids, they would have been happy with this on endless loop, ignoring anything else. What a fantastic evolution of a music production. It's the message of the song that penetrates through the music for me. It's about whaling in the 1800s and follows a very real organization that dominated trade in New Zealand. Thinking of it with that context grounds the music as something that some sailors just kinda made up to pass the time and somehow it got to us, like a direct connection to the past. The phrase "soon may the wellerman come" brings bittersweet emotions from me knowing that the wellerman shall never again come.

For people who do not understand, this song is about whaling, and the ship the Wellerman. the Wellerman was a supply ship, that went across the oceans selling supplies to ships. It was owned by Two brothers that had immigrated from New Zealand. They started this in 1833. They did this because whaling was a popular job. While whaling you were also out from sea for a long period of time. therefore, they needed provisions.
