Lyrics:
I was twenty-four years old
When I met the woman I would call my own
Twenty-two grand kids now growing old
In that house that your brother bought ya
On the summer day when I proposed
I made that wedding ring from dentist gold
And I asked her father, but her daddy said, no
You can't marry my daughter
She and I went on the run
Don't care about religion
I'm gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan
And I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border
Well, I met her at Guy's in the second world war
And she was working on a soldier's ward
Never had I seen such beauty before
The moment that I saw her
Nancy was my yellow rose
And we got married wearing borrowed clothes
We got eight children now growing old
Five sons and three daughters
She and I went on the run
Don't care about religion
I'm gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan
And I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border
From the snow white streak in her jet black hair
Over sixty years I've been loving her
Now we're sat by the fire inour old armchairs
You know Nancy, I adore ya
From a farm boy born near Belfast town
I never worried about the king and crown
'Cause I found my heart upon the southern ground
There's no difference, I assure ya
She and I went on the run
Don't care about religion
I'm gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan
And I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border

'from the snow white streak in her jet black hair over 60 years I've been lov'n her now we're sat by the fire in our old armchairs ya know Nancy I adore ya.' That line is incredibly romantic. Especially since he based this song on the real story of his grandparents.

@liam walmsley Well, I could tell it was a modern song because it mentions World War 2, which, according to the lyrics, was 60 years earlier. However, my point still stands: you don't hear many love songs that are about life after the wooing is done.

*I can't express how much joy it is to listen to.* It makes me want to sing and dance along - which looks weird in a supermarket queue. Must look like I have to go to the bathroom or something, though I just try to contain myself and going on semi pointe and down over and over or go one small step back and forth over- cross to, carefully to not step at anyones toes. On the other hand: if people kept their distance as told since 2.5 years this wouldn't be something to worry.

One thing I love about this song and other acapella-ish songs like this is that it shows the true instrument: the voice! No matter your vocal range, anyone can make amazing sounds with their voices, without using instruments that take years to master. However, I like this one as it uses voices and instruments, showing the true similarities between the two.

I WAS ASKED WHAT STYLE IT WAS AND IF IT WAS IRISH.... and I answered with: "uhm, äh, uhm .. a mix of Irish, tap dance and contemporary because I never had a lesson in my life!" They said it looked beautiful and fun ! THIS IS WHAT YOU MADE ME, TRAINING FOR 1.5 YEARS BUT STEPPING UP THE GAME RECENTLY. And I have to step up my nutricion too because starved you are likely to hurt yourself. As a struggling anorexic, thank you, you gave me joy AND A PURPOSE TO FEED MY BODY.

But I was also almost kicked into ovlivion because some teens found it funny to kung- fu jump agsinst my leg mid turn. Sadly my turn was at 180 degrees when he hit , so i could catch it with my tigh. If not for the LAST SPIN I ALWAYS DO ON THE LAST NOTE, he had kicked my supporting leg from under me I would have smashed my implants and hw could have gone for my back. Why is it that some people always try to take away that tiny bit fun others find.

Right ? I cant keep still though I think I tore some muscles during trying the side - overstep crossways backwards technique.....( left to right overstep, backwards) (and left is my hurt leg, so if I buckle, I will fall) And now I clapped my hands bruised.....because a fist makes a different sound than a normal clap....and I had to. )

@@janedoex1398 I know the feeling, I was jiggling and jiving while making tea on the way to bed and now I am walking like an 80year old... didn't even know I had muscles in some places. But I listened to it again during my break...and I just had to move again...

@@lizabredenkamp2930 Oh I know that feeling.... I have to step up my nutrition because otherwise ( I have anorexia) I could seriously hurt myself. At least now I have some more motivation. And to be able to kick back if anyone ever kicks me into the legs/ knees because I was dancing. Thanks due to training and slowly getting better at coordination, balance and endurance I didn't fall. Then he would likely have stepped on my back. I got a lot of crap because no one is attacked simply for hopping to music ( they were cheereing at first, just some Teens) and the music ended and I always make a turn on semi - pointe and then stop completely still. During the turn he kicked my tigh - thank god from the front - because he didn't expect the turn. Otherwise it would have been the back of my knee / tigh. I don't care anymore if people believe me. As well as the cops who did nothing other than ask me if I'm drunk.

@@janedoex1398 I'm glad you have some motivation now, maybe put it on repeat and just start slapping to the beat and if you get attacked you have a new fighting style: The Nancy Mulligan bitch slap ;). At least they asked you if you were drunk. I'm a teacher, my kids looked at me funny and next thing I know, my principal comes in suggesting that I go home and come back when I feel better...took a while to convince him that I am not on drugs and it was just an amazing song. Apparently, my 10/11 year olds don't appreciate my dancing style...and here I thought I was great..

As far as I know, I have absolutely no Irish heritage to speak of (I'm Ashkenazi Jewish and some Mediterranean), but something about the song awakens the purest of joy in my soul. I find myself wanting to dance with my love to this song every time I hear it!
