It's been a long time since you've seen her
Could have been three years or more.
Will she be waiting when we dock, boys
Or like others will she be gone?
It's one more pull boys, that'll do boys
Soon we'll draw alongside.
Hoist her upwards boys, swing her inboard
For the journey's nearly done.
Well you're looking mighty smart, boy
Dressed up in your number ones
You've scrounged a new blade from the purser
To take the bum-fluff from off your chin.
When we've fixed those bow and stern lines
And you've scuttled down the gangway
If she's waiting there, just kiss her
Turn around, give us a smile.
Well, we too will go ashore soon
(Get drunk in the clubs and bars,)
Then stagger homeward, pockets empty
Like so many nights before.
Well a man may take a wife, boy
And a man may take a mistress,
But a sailor has his ship, boys
And his mistress it is the sea.
For the journey now is done.

The first time I heard this song was fairly recently and a day or two after my grandfather died. What makes is appropriate is that he was in the Navy during the Korean War. While he was discharged after the armistice, he always remained a sailor at heart. Roughly three years ago, my grandmother passed away before him. They had been together for over 60 years, so her loss was very hard on him. When I hear this, I can't help but picture him as he was when they first got married, in his dress whites, meeting her in the beyond. I can't hear this song without tearing up. Thanks for the good tune, boys.

These harmonies have haunted me every day since I discovered this song. I know it's not really a shanty, nor is it even that old (I believe the original is from the 1980s?), but there's something so immersive about the way it just gently rolls through each verse. Y'all really struck gold here with this one. I would listen to an entire album that's just this style of track.

These lyrics remind me of my time sailing on the Mackenzie River. Me and the boys would work 6 months straight on an aids to navigation vessel. As the season came to a close and things began to freeze, we would refer to this time as “Last Pull”. It was hard work picking the buoys and getting them high up on the banks where they wouldn’t be taken out by high water or ice. We would all look forward to letting loose and seeing our old ladies if they had stuck it out with us.
