Either they were in heat and thus it just a bunch of unlucky dudes who were caught up in this or people who pissed off an elephants before. A wendigo is terrifying because speaking it’s name will cause one to rapidly come to your location but saying elephants wouldn’t make an angry stampede of elephants approach your house and kill you
