The Fortifications of Québec have borne witness to so many of Quebec and Canada's most pivotal moments, but this story is...unique. In 1766, the Gazette de Quebec reports that there was a werewolf stalking the countryside outside the city's stone walls...

FRENCH VERSION: • Le loup-garou de Québec
Place names:
For storytelling purposes, we occasionally refer to locations from a contemporary perspective. We will always side with simplicity, flow, and clarity in order to make the episodes as engaging as possible.
French Canadian:
We are phasing this terminology out of our scripts, but sometimes it slips through due to word-repetition and simplicity. Where possible, we endeavour to say “Canadiens,” or “Quebecois,” or “francophones” depending on the context. We’d actually forgotten it was in this script until the editing phase unfortunately.
The Gazette de Quebec:
The source of the article that first caught our interest years ago when we posted a blog/Twitter thread on the subject. Interestingly, the newspaper was relatively new at the time that the infamous werewolf story was published. The paper started in June 1764. In fact, there were no newspapers in New France between 1608 and 1763 because the French officials opposed the establishment of a printing press. In our episode about Rouge Park, we mention one of the most pivotal consequences of having a free press: the French Revolution.
Wolf Blood (1925):
One of the coolest things we came across with this episode is the silent-era film Wolf Blood. It’s said to be the oldest surviving werewolf movie. It’s an American film, but it’s actually set in Canada (shocking!). In a Canadian forest, two rival logging companies become so hostile with each other that a lumberjack is beaten and left for dead. Only a blood transfusion from a wolf can save him! You can find the flick all over KZfaq as it’s in the public domain.
The Beast of Gévaudan:
There are other Canadien werewolf tales, but we found it incredible that this story lined up so closely with one of the most famous stories in the world. The first report of the beast came from a young woman who'd been herding cattle. She described the beast as "like a wolf, yet not a wolf." Not long after, a girl named Jeanne Boulet was killed by an animal while watching livestock. And the attacks continued, targeting mostly women and children, until they could no longer be dismissed as regular animal activity.
At one point up to 30,000 volunteers were recruited to help hunt the beast. Some even dressed like women in hopes of luring the animal. It helped that the reward money was close to one year's salary for a working man at the time.
One particular story stands out of a young woman named Marie-Jenne Valet who was walking home alone from a neighbouring farm, armed with a homemade spear, when she turned around to see the Beast of Gévaudan, which she described as a terrifyingly large dog. She immediately drove her spear into the animal's chest, which sent it running away, injured. A monument stands in Auvers, France, in honour of her bravery. Some theories have suggested the animal was a wolf-dog hybrid trained to attack people.
A favourite film of one of the creators of Canadiana, The Brotherhood of the Wolf is loosely based on the animal killings in Gévaudan-though in this film, (spoilers) the beast is a lion in disguise.
General Loups Garous lore:
In Quebecois culture, a loup-garou is strongly connected to Catholic morality. It could be a curse given to someone guilty of not being a good Christian-like failing to confess sins.
In Canadien folklore, the spell over a werewolf could be broken only if someone recognizes the werewolf while transformed, and is able to draw blood from the animal. However, if successful, neither may speak of the incident again, lest they meet an even worse fate.

Werewolves stories at Quebec City? Given that I am a Canadian-born African native from Montreal, I am more familiar with stories of haunted museums and campus sites downtown, haunted houses from the Edwardian or Victorian era, another haunted wax museum (and this one may be true. My older sister used to work there as a security guard when she was 18 years old and she doesn't believe in ghost stories and magic, but she witnessed some creepy things while working in there overnight. She later on asked to her employer to get her transferred elsewhere) , of reality-warping energy disturbances caused by a peculiar junction of the so called "lines of Ley" and other electromagnetic phenomena. Of warlocks, witches and even vampires. Personally, I better hold some mild conviction about paranormal phenomena I have actually witnessed firsthand. When you're a person of color at Montreal, you're more attuned to see or be the target of a lot of messed-up things going around.

The early American wildlife artist James Audubon claimed he was following wolf tracks in a bayou just east of New Orleans 1817. He claimed in mid stride the wolf track changed to human footprint. He immediately grew fearful and fled as fast as his feet could carry him. He recounted this to Jim Bowie at a resteraunt in New Orleans. And is printed in an early chapter The Iron Mistress. A biography of Jim Bowie.

It wasn't just wolves that this apparently happened with. With Louisiana Our Miss itself do dictate that much like the Canadian lugaru they can also turn into other animals including that of an alligator. There are a lot of Legends and stories that I remember growing up where somebody was chased by a wolf only to run into the water to try and Escape them only to see the wolf turn into a reptile and continue after them

@@maskytot681 Is it not a tremendous reach to name this a skinwalker? Sure sounds like it friend.
@maskytot681
@maskytot681 Жыл бұрын
@@Joe3pops no it is a far reach to call it that. I myself am Native American and to tell you the truth the differences between the Acadian version of a werewolf and a Native American Skinwalker are two entirely different things. For instance there are two versions of a skinwalker and both of them are far more deadly. The Louisiana Loop Guru however has its different standpoints. At times the creature can be a thing of warning but an oftentimes it is also something to learn from. It is said that if you go to the loop Guru and kindness it will show you mercy and at times can even offer advice however if you go at it and are hostile or you are unfriendly it will attack you with savagery. In the Native American ways the other however is a lot worse. And unfortunately there are true accounts and sadly they're even court cases about you don't hear about them much but yes there have been court cases with this stuff I can't go into it too much because yes talking this much about it is skirting the amount of safety I can have in my culture. And no offense but I'm not going to risk getting hurt by talking too much about it

We worked with multiple First Nations this season but those episodes coincidentally seem to all be in the latter half of the season. We have one enormous episode that we attempted to make in direct collaboration with a Haida writer/researcher, but it's a longer-term process and has been delayed until we finish this season. We are always trying to figure out ways to collaborate for future episodes/seasons!

Very interesting video. I didn't know about this peculiar episode of our "history". I like how you described the different forms a loup-garou could take in Québec folklore. However, it would have been nice if you explained how one can become a loup-garou. In Québec, you would become a loup-garou if you didn't "make your Easters" (faire ses Pâques), which means confess your sins and partake in Holy Communion in Easter time (an obligation from the Church), for seven years in a row. Doing so would change the man into a beast, and the only way to dispel the curse was to make the poor soul bleed on his forehead, where he received baptism.

I live in Edmonton. In 1992 the people that I worked with were furious that Eric Lindross refused to play with the Quebec Nordiques. He signed with an American team over a Canadian team. I am glad that he never won a Stanley Cup.

I mean if it started in Quebec and the people in New Orleans are just displaced Acadiens it makes sense the same urban legends would survive. Just like from France to Quebec
