West Memphis Three, three American men who in 1994, while teenagers, were found guilty of murdering three young boys in West Memphis, Arkansas, allegedly as part of devil worship. The men garnered national attention due to a series of documentaries and books that questioned their convictions as well as the vocal support of numerous celebrities. After the discovery of new DNA evidence, the three entered Alford pleas in 2011 and were released for time served. The West Memphis Three are Damien Echols Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr.
On May 5, 1993, Christopher Byers, Michael Moore, and Stevie Branch-all of whom were eight years old-went bike riding in West Memphis. Later that evening, their parents reported the boys missing. The following day, law officers found their naked and hog-tied bodies in a drainage ditch in a forested area known as Robin Hood Hills. The boys had been beaten, and Byers’s body showed signs of mutilation. The police believed that the murders were connected to Satan worship. Almost immediately they interviewed Damien Echols, an 18-year-old high-school dropout and self-proclaimed Wiccan who was considered a troublemaker. In addition, he had a history of mental issues, notably depression. Echols denied knowing the boys or being involved in their deaths.
Police, however, remained focused on Echols, and they soon received help from Vicki Hutcheson, whose 8-year-old child was friends with the victims and claimed to have witnessed their murders but was unable to identify the assailants. In a meeting with police, she was told that Echols had been interviewed, and she offered to “play detective” by meeting him. With the encouragement of law officers, she enlisted the help of Misskelley, a 17-year-old neighbour who knew Echols. According to Hutcheson, on May 19, 1993, she, Misskelley, and Echols attended a gathering of witches at a nearby field. She then claimed that the proceedings devolved into an orgy, at which point she asked Echols to take her home; Misskelley stayed. Hutcheson later related the events to the police and reportedly passed a polygraph test.
Armed with this information, police interviewed Misskelley, who reportedly had an IQ of about 72. Despite initially denying involvement in the crime, he eventually confessed, saying that he had helped detain the three young boys but left before Echols and 16-year-old Jason Baldwin, who were best friends, committed the murders. All three were arrested in June 1993, though no physical evidence connected them to the crime and each had alibis.
Jessie Misskelly was found guilty of first-degree and second-degree murder and was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Echols and Baldwin were found guilty of first-degree murder. Echols was later sentenced to the death penalty, and Baldwin was given life without the possibility of parole.
in 2007 a hair found in a knot on one of the victims was sent for DNA testing, the technology of which was not available in the 1990s. It was determined that the hair was not consistent with the hair of Echols, Misskelley, or Baldwin. However, it was consistent with the hair of Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of Stevie Branch. In addition, another hair found at the crime scene was consistent with the hair of a friend of Hobbs. However, Hobbs denied any involvement in the murders.
Based on this and additional evidence-including allegations that during deliberations in the trial of Echols and Baldwin, the jury foreman introduced Misskelley’s confession, which was inadmissable-a judge vacated all three convictions on August 19, 2011. Immediately thereafter, Echols, Baldwin, and Misskelley pled guilty while maintaining their innocence; the rare legal maneuver is known as an Alford plea. They were released after each was sentenced to time served and received a 10-year suspended sentence.

@claire casey I think Melissa died of a broken heart also. Of the 3 boys, Christopher had the worst injuries! His manner of death was blunt force trauma. The other 2 boys drowned to death, but Christopher was beaten to death. For some reason, the FBI Profiler believed that Christopher was the main focus of the attacks, then Stevie Branch. It is believed that the third boy, Michael Moore, was not a target at all but was killed because he was a witness. He sustained the least amount of injuries.

@@rucianapollard7098 I talked to Mark once on Facebook many years ago. He seemed like a decent guy even though he's acted crazy for the cameras over the years, he finally turned around and thought the West Memphis Three (Damien, Jason and Jessie) were actually innocent and he didn't believe they were guilty anymore as he ranted and raved about for so long. We didn't really talk about the case. We just kinda BSed about life. I don't remember exactly what we talked about but I know it wasn't involving the WM3 case because I wanted to be respectful and not upset him. I was sad to learn that he had died more recently. He was also a suspect for a long time.

They looked at Steve Branch’s stepfather, Terry. A lot of people still think he did it…even Steve’s mother, Pam. She no longer thinks the 3 teenagers did it. And Christopher Byers mother, Melissa died a few years back. It was considered “suspicious” and they questioned her husband, Mark. And Mark was also questioned about the murders (and this was after they had already sent the boys to prison for murder) and he denied being involved. And before Mark died in a car crash, he also said he no longer believed the teenagers were responsible. Seriously though, the boys (the victims)…it seems every person in their families were weird/crazy. I think it would have served everyone in their families and in that community well if they would NOT have gotten tunnel vision for the teenagers. They just refused to look anywhere else or anybody else. Just my opinion. And I agree…I hope Christopher, Steve and Michael RIP.

@@missyann7588 The 3 boys came from really poor backgrounds, just like the teenagers accused of killing them. It was reported that Stevie Branch was being physically abused by his stepfather, Terry Hobbs, and that Hobbs was sexually abusing his 3 year old daughter. Christopher Byers had serious behavioral problems. He was constantly in trouble at school. His school counselor had called in a social worker because Christopher exhibited signs of sexual abuse. In fact, he and Stevie Branch had been found behind a school wall throwing their excrement at each other!! Michael Moore seemed to be the only kid with little to no family drama. His mother was involved in a car accident where the other driver was killed, after Michael's death. For some reason, the FBI seemed to think that Michael was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, and was not an intended victim. He suffered the least amount of injuries and actually drowned to death. Christopher Byers seemed to have been the main target of the murders. He was brutally beaten to death, suffering a crushed skull! He died of bkunt force trauma. Stevie Branch also suffered head injuries, but like Michael, he drowned to death. Only Christopher was beaten to death. The FBI didn't say why the believed that Christopher was the main target, but they feel strongly about it.

@yigalordbanette8044 Oh, ok, it's been a while since I've watched the documentaries, and maybe I thought they said cancer. Anyways, still such a tragedy.. the entire case because whomever killed those little boys is still free today. I know one theory is that it was Stevie Branch's stepfather. The state won't do anything because as far as they are concerned, the case remains closed due to the Alford Plea of the West Memphis Three. I think we all know why they took that plea and not only are they innocent, but victims ad well. They should be exonerated and the case re-opened but I doubt it ever will be.

I have often thought about these boys murders since I saw the documentary, Paradise Lost, back in the mid-90's. Lots of speculation, but here we are 30 years later, and it's still unsolved. There are so much involved with this case, how could you even begin to discuss it. I greatly appreciate that your video focused on the lives of these little boys that should be here today. Seeing each of those graves was just heartbreaking. Leaving a car at each grave was extremely thoughtful. The story you shared regarding the cemetery were Chris Byers is buried and being told by staff to "be nice" just brought me to tears though. I just can't even imagine or understand what has happened before. I'm sure making this video must have been a very emotional one for you. You didn't mention the bloody man seen at the restaurant had his arm in a cast so he had only one free arm. Also Damien and Jason were seen on the night of the murders near the crime scene walking along the service road around 930pm with wet and muddy pants. The witnesses who saw them was a mother and her 2 children and they knew Damian. According to authorities Damien would often contradict himself in his statements to various people and had an infatuation with the dark side. None of the 3 accused had concrete alibis that could stand up to scrutiny. Jesse actually made 6 or 7 confessions to various people. There was also an inmate who claimed Jason Baldwin confessed to him regarding the murders. Thanks Scott for the vid and remembering the victims and showing us where it happened. Nice work.

In 2007 (around the time a certain individual had his DNA pinched) I somehow ended up getting very involved (through the forums at the time) in the campaign to release the WM3. Your footage was the first time I saw the inside of Bojangles properly, I've always wondered where the case might have ended up if the evidence taken there that night was treated properly. Justice for the West Memphis 6. If new DNA testing is ever allowed to go ahead I'm sure the WM3 will be exonerated and the real perp will be identified. Arkansas blocking testing is a disgrace.

THIS!!! 💯 I still have my "Free The WM3" sticker from 20 years ago! The fact that the accused want the test run and the state keeps pushing against it is beyond telling. DNA doesn't lie and that's what Arkansas is afraid of. They know who did it and know that it wasn't those boys otherwise they wouldn't be throwing every legal roadblock up that they can.

I and most American believe the 3 teenage boys who were obsessed with rock and roll darkness, are the killers to the three boys. Their adult friend, the one caught at the restaurant in muddy clothing helped the dark teenage boys dispose of the young boys' bodies because teenager wont know what to do. If the authorites would collect more evidence on the 3 boys bodies today, they would find all the killers DNA under finger nails cause back in the 90s, DNA testing wasnt a thing, so I guranntee if they reexamined the boys bodies, they would find the DNA of all three of teenage killers and the adult who disposed of them by doing the genealogy testing to find the killers! This case happened in the early 90s which means they need to reexamine their bodies since no one is being held accountable todsy for their deaths since the 3 satanic killer boys were helped out by rich elite celebrities to get them out of prison. This is ridiculous! The DA of West Memphis NEEDS TO DO THEIR damn JOBS and open up this unsolved child murder case! We are way more advanced today then we were in 1993. This case could be solved if our government wasnt LAZY and TYRANNICAL!

Satanic panic was a real thing back in the 90s and its starting back up today! People are killing each other literally every other day in America. We deal with pedophiles every week and we literally have family annihilators every other week in America bc satan time is almost up. Satan and his demons are very real, but sadly, lost people who follow the corrupt world DONT KNOW HOW TO TELL THE DEVIL NO!!! It's this simple. Lost people like Satanist literally believe if they do evil, satan will give them the world [rich and fame]. And Satan tried to tempt Jesus with the same offer but Jesus said, "Get behind me satan, Do not tempt the Lord thy God!" And if satan tempts our Lord Jesus Christ, Satan will temp any corrupt human! Most won't tell him no.

I have had this documentary saved on my “to watch later” for a month now and I finally got to watch it. I remember when this all happened in 1993 I saw it on the news and have seen every documentary and news clip since (because I just couldn’t fathom this happening to 3 precious boys) and you Scott have done one of the BEST and most respectful documentaries I have seen. But that doesn’t surprise me as it is you and that is how you do these. Thank you ❤

@@seventh_adam4410 yeah the Paradise Lost series, West of Memphis, and the books Devils knot, Abomination by William Ramsey, Damien’s Book Life After Death, a book about Mark Byers called Untying the Knot, Blood on Black, The Blood of Innocents, a book on Jason Baldwin called Dark Spell and a website back in the day called Callahan 8 if I remember the name correctly. It had all the police files and audio of all the recorded interviews. I think that’s about all I’ve watched and read over the years.

I've followed this story for a very long time. I remember something that 17 yr old Damian said during an interview that "people are afraid of what they don't understand " So profound for someone so young. It broke my heart. Those boys could have been my own kids. Wearing black, listening to Metallica. The is also a movie starring Reese Witherspoon as Stevie Branches mother called Devils Knot.

One by one? Kinda hard to say how they were killed?? I have always thought that it had to be at-least two killers, scared as no doubt they were but I cannot imagine being frozen with fear just waiting to be tied up or your turn to be tied up.. I hope one day they do find the killer(s) and have them meet the same fear and pain they brought to these 3 little boys.

This story has always touched me closely. My son was the same age as these boys and the day or so or maybe the same day had been out on his bike riding and had encountered a neighbor friend who was out riding with his mom and sibling and came home and asked could he go back and go with them they were going to go down the road further i said ok, he decided to walk instead of ride his bike and ran off to catch up. They had already left and he went in the direction which was toward a large train yard, the road had hills and curves and he kept thinking as he rounded each that he just saw them go out of sight as your brain can play tricks on your vision. He kept walking the road has a few off roads but besides the train yard is deserted and seldom traveled by folks, we took it as a short cut to school some. A neighbor saw him and asked if he needed a ride and he declined and said he was fine. At some point he realized he'd missed them, they had took a side road. It was supper time and my husband went to look for him. He was at his friends they didn't know he was coming back to go with them. My husband went to all the houses around - our son wasn't one to wander off - i knew he had to be somewhere around. My son decided he had walked so far that instead of turning back he'd just go on and make the loop back. The only problem was it was a long way around that way much farther than he remembered or realized. At the end of that road he turned and walked up to the main busy 6 lane highway and started back - he stopped at a store and asked for water, but there are not a lot of stores but some businesses along that way but lots of traffic and he is a young kid. He said some one else stopped to ask if he needed a ride he said no and kept going - by this time we had given up and called the police, although I couldn't accept we needed to because he wouldn't go off or disappear like that. He hadn't in his mind he was just walking back home - the end of that road was around 2 miles, he ended up walking another 3 1/2 miles or so, as the police arrive and start getting info and calling out a be on the lookout for him. He was about 2 miles from our house and now on a neighbor 2 lane curvy road and a ki d young man who had seen him earlier pulled over near a little store and gas station - he asked him if he lived nearby and he told him that he had nephews his age and didn't want him to get hurt, it was starting to get dusky. He told my son that a lady at the store was his friend and would let him call home and get someone to come get him. My son went in to call but we were out with the police and neighbors we really didn't know but had started looking too and couldn'thear the phone. So the lady asked him if he knew any other numbers he knew my parents number and so she called and my Mom answered but almost hung up when the lady asked if she had a grandson thinking it was a sales call but she didn't and the lady explained to her where he was, she told her she would come get him but as she got off the phone she heard the police scanner go off and the all oints bulletin go off for him so she called the station and told them who she was and where he was. She knew they could get there quicker - they picked him up and brought him home. The next day i was taking him to school or picking him up and heard the story of them missing i think it was or maybe being found and remember thinking how lucky we were. He is now almost 40 and has a son about the same age as they were and a younger daughter and i worry and pray for their safety. Such a tragic story i stop to listen any time I hear it mentioned hoping they solve the case and hurt for their families

This was a heavy one....And you handled it perfectly. The poise and professionalism that came from your narration - the care and respect that came from the way you presented this story....Sure, I know a lot of people have seen this story in many ways many times, but you bring such a personal and (dare I say it) sweet caring that I haven't seen from some. You are one of the best here on KZfaq for those reasons and many more. Your craft of film is along with those who work "professionally" in the medium. At times you're a seasoned investigative reporter, other times a comedian shining brighter than a moonlit night. This story had to be hard, but what I like about all your presentations is that you bring a bit of you into every one. Your spirit is infectious. But as for this story - you did a fabulous job to showcase those little boys who never had a chance in this ever increasing chaotic, neurotic and senseless world. Check out the sun flare that burns into a perfect orb at 17:20. More than a few are listening. Anyway, I'm blabbering now - but thanx for this special vlog. Heart breaking and frustrating and damn near insane - but through all this, we must keep hope. Until your next vid, my friend, Take Care.
